If online is an option and you're looking for somewhere that will have it shave ready, and not just the factory's definition of shave ready, check

    Any recommendations?

I'm in the same boat as yourself and am very close to buying my first.
I spent the weekend reading far too many posts and reviews on all
the straight razor boards I could find. Have a look at the reviews on the
Dovo Special 5/8 or 6/8, it gets recommended as a good starter straight
(seen it mentioned as the 'HD of straights').

As soon as I figure out what strop I want, belt or paddle yet to be decided,
I'll order the special 6/8. I'll also make sure I get it honed and
stropped before I get it as Dovo's definition of 'shave ready' out of the
factory seems hit and miss- based again on online feedback.

Grafton Barbers have a few. I think they're made by Taylors of Old Bond Street. http://www.tayloroldbondst.co.uk

Well I pulled the trigger and ordered the Dovo Special in tortoise.
Based on advice from Steve in The Invisible Edge I just picked up a cheap
Dovo strop as there is no point getting an expensive one until I perfect
the stropping. He also ships his razors shave ready and hones himself so no need
    to order an additional honing.

I got one from Steve a while back as well, the wap-something. I got it going fairly well, when you are starting, just do from the sideburns to the Jawline, thats it. Keep doing that untill youre bored and move on to the next bit. I havnt used it for ages, just dont have the time at the moment, but its a fantastic feeling when it goes well.

Wapienica (Sp?). They take a fearsome edge. I got one for a tenner before everyone figured out they're good. The original steel scales suck a bit though.

    Hey guys

Firstly i recommend the site, the invisible edge.com, amazing resource full of info.

Secondly, I bought the Dovo 5/8 with tortoise handle a while back (6 months). Hundreds of great reviews from beginners and pros alike give it the thumbs up.
Cant say enough good things about it. Amazing product. Although i didn't think mine was Shave ready, noticed a very nice improvement after stropping it a bit, which can be youtubed for instructions.
Might i also add, GET A STROP, its very very needed, u can buy a sharpening stone to hone on months down the line, but you need a strop, and strop frequentily, big difference in quality of shave(and cuts!)

Straight razors, although take more time and effort, they give the smoothest shave i've ever imagined after a couple weeks practice. Shower with hot water first really helps!!!

    hope it helps lads
