Ways and means are possible. If everyone misses the bulk of their orientation and doesn't enrol when they're scheduled to, it's a nightmare. It one person does, it's a tiny inconvenience. It's possible that the admin people will be able to shoot you through enrollment in the morning.

The problem will be with your department, course and advisor meetings as they're all scheduled for the afternoon. If it works like former years, that's when they'll be handing out tutorial times as well as the useful but less necessary introductions to faculty and that sort of thing. If you really really want to go, you have the option to either hightail it out at 4 and make your debs wherever that is or skip the afternoon (which ideally you should go to).

Obviously there's the problem of the second day but if you go to your debs you'll miss that anyway. The most important thing you must do during orientation is to enroll. Everything else is highly useful (like the course meeting) or just useful (like the campus tour) but enrolling is essential. If you cover that, you're missing out on other useful stuff but nothing that absolutely locked-in essential (incidentally, a tiny number of people enrol on the "wrong" day every year. As long as it's a tiny tiny number (as in ten or so) it doesn't throw the universe out of kilter).

For the rest of you, I didn't say any of that - if you've not got a debs you reckon is essential to attend then you should go through your entire orientation as it's very important to your future happiness and well-being. But if you have a debs or a funeral or wedding to go to, there are things that can be arranged (and by "things" I basically mean getting someone to sort it the people in the enrollment hall so you can skip the queue if necessary if that's what it takes to get you there).

Thank you so much for this info. :)
But to be honest if my Orientation "week" does begin on the Thursday I reckon I will have to give the Debs a skip.
I really do not want to miss any of this stuff and as you say it is super important in order to get into the swing of college life.
I'm not too upset. The Debs is more trouble than it's worth and is only one night. The orientation is the beginning of 4 years!

    Ahem!!!
I didn't rain on your parade when you and the lads were organising stuff for orientation week!!!

During orientation week you will be able to try out a number of clubs and societies (mainly clubs as societies are less activity based), go to gigs each night (which will be FREE...yes FREE*)

    That's the spirit!

Really though...come down, move in, get to know your housemates...you'll be spending a year with them, and they'll be getting to know people in their course more and more from Week 1 (Orientation week is Week 0), so seize the opportunity while it's there.

Also...UL is trying to move back to a 7 day campus model, so if you haven't got a weekend job but are looking for one, try Limerick.

*May involve going to Day 2 to get the tickets in the Concert Hall

    Yes, most definitely!

Business has massive numbers every year, so meeting some of your class on the first day will be daunting, but knowing some of them from orientation week ought to make the transition easier.
I know this, as I was in your shoes 4 years ago, and I am still good mates with 4 people I met during my orientation day for BBS.

Well, if u want to meet for a drink, send me a PM during orientation week, and I'll meet up if ya want.

And anybody who is coming as an Access Student, the week prior to orientation week will get to meet me also :)

Especially when you live on campus :D We used to wander around our building in thomond making friends with our neighbours its soo fun :D Cant wait to be back in 3 weeks time! Hope my timetable is nice this year!

Sceptre, all those years as a guide and senior guide have paid off. Well done! :)

To all the incomings, one VITAL piece of information that NO ONE tells you: the photo they take for your ID card during enrolment is the SAME photo that UL will always use for you if you ever need a re-issue or you enrol as a postgrad. Smile cos you're stuck with that image for at least four years.*

*There are ways and means. But again, I didn't say that. /runs away.

i actually look like a 14 year old in my student id picture. I hate it.

Classes start the following week: Monday 7th Sept...you will receive your timetable during orientation week anyhow, so you will know when your lectures are on.

I agree with Mossin.....defintely go for a pint with your house mates and the people you meet during week 1.....if I didn't I wouldn't have met that kaimera fella + plus a few others and I'd probably be a lot worse off now.

Congrats on your results, and see you around UL.

While I dont condone underage drinking  :p and would never offer advice on how to get drink to underage students :D god I cant even write this sincerely...

You dont need to drink to have a good time in UL! That much is true...there will be plenty of nights out, but you can go to most of them even @ 17.

I'm up for a pint whenever I get down there and settle in!
Heard so much about this Stables place

I'm still in a serious knot about Debs vs. Orientation.
I've had three friends who just finished their first years in various colleges telling me to get real and go to the Debs but then others telling me to go to Orientation.
I can't leave UL at 4 on the day because there would be no way I'd be ready in time.
    Argggggggggghhhh

Why is it always me who lists these things...

    Orientation for:
Faculty of Education starts on the Tuesday
Faculty of Science and Engineering starts on the Tuesday or Wednesday, depending on the course.
Faculty of Business starts on the Wednesday
Faculty of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences starts on the Thursday

Each orientation programme runs over two days so add one day to your start day depending on your course. That's your "week".

It's all cleverly hidden on this webpage (which you may not reach by doing a search on the UL site for "orientation" as it tries to send you to a secure page instead for no particular reason with no included cert).

It does help to read a thread:rolleyes:

    Bulbs == boards UL beers.

People from boards who also happen to be in UL get together and go for a few pints.
