    Sounds exactly like the avalanche sirens in Austrian Alps, you hear them all the time when there is heavy snowfall, you can hear them from miles away.

    Yes Overblood that was a little chilling. I can imagine people having nightmares filled with that sound for the rest of their lives after the blitz.

    Up to a couple of years ago, the town hall in cavan had one of them sirens that used to go off to alert all the fireman that there was a fire (in the days before pagers and mobile phones) we used to be outdour drinks connosoiuers in thems days.... circa this....

    no i meant as in my grand dad was a fire fighter In liver pool in ww2 but like people die, on booth sides my great Uncle was a member of the dessert rats In tabruke which is on the Libyan egypition boarder well where hes buried.. there a couple of other great uncles scattered around Europe from ww2.

    When I was in school (2003) the army barracks used to test their siren once a month. It was quite chilling and annoying to listen to, even if it was half a mile away. It even went off during the middle of our English paper 2 exam, but it didn't distract us too much though. The following day there were calls to the local equivalent of the Joe Duffy show about it...

    It's a horrible sound.

    I can't even begin to comprehend the feelings experienced by those who have actually heard it used for its intended purpose.

    I would be terrified.. doesn't help that it's such an eerie sound.
