Undecided but Id have to say Roberston is probably one of the funkiest guitarists and came up with some great solos (still in love with you) on the spot. this is emerald. great twin & harmony.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rENy7MQIYJs

Rory Gallagher for pure ability and emotion.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxiEMpcI83E

And Morello of the new era, savage ability. never goes with obvious licks etc. Great unconventional sounds but without being up his own arse like hendrix.and keeps the solos very relevant to the song.

He is very tommy Emmanuel (who I think is amazing), but for just shortness of years and playing time (4 years so I am told) Gareth Pearson.

Been listening to over the weekend on repeat almost

    Crazy babies
    Miracle man
    Fire in the sky

When did zakk stop being bothered? The above are exciting, shredfests where as he is basically writing, recording and releasing the same boring song over and over again nowadays.

    Its quite a shame

My second post in this thread, a few more of my faves.

Neil Young- electric & accoustic- simple but deadly effective.
Andy Fairweather Lowe- backup man to the stars.
    Anyone who played in Skynrd.
    Richard Thompson- criminally underrated player.
I mentioned Peter Green a few times in my last post but it would'nt be right not to leave out Jeremy Spencer & Danny Kirwan too.
Buddy Whittington- John Mayalls longtime guitarist.
Mick Taylor (Stones, JM & the Bluesbreakers)

And lastly a controversial one- Mr Ike Turner. Kind of consigned to the history books for obvious Tina beating reasons but I just love his sound. Bright & piercing was his signature sound- apparently he played like that just to stand out in the band more! A very funky player.

I can,t believe no one has mentioned Yngwie Malmsteen, he is a real guitarist,s guitar player, his tecnique is astoundind !!!!!!!!.:)

  • Registered Users Posts: 507 ✭✭✭bigbadcon

+1 Michael Romeo from Symphony X.

Steve Vai is amazing .....I love Die to Live

I am definitely impressed with Malmsteen but I find his stuff hard to listen to after a while.

Satriani again impressed with his ability but find it even harder listening to his porno soundtrack music...

Can some one suggest a Satriani masterpiece that might prove me wrong ..

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,281 ✭✭✭-=al=-

    for non porno music?

he has a ton of different styles across his albums, although as of late though its been less frequent to prove that point, check out anything from the engines of creation cd or the self titled album, both completly different from each other, his older stuff has much more crazy technical stuff going on... not of this earth is pretty interesting too.. i persum you know the classics from surfing with the alien and flying in a blue dream, + the good all round extremist, crystal planet and strange beautiful music

and malmsteen we all know he's good but hes a douche and 90% of people feel the same way that its boring after a while

dont know if buckethead was mentioned but he's probably one of the best, tons and tons of album and some are completly crazy and different, he's a genius

    I agree with you 100%

I wouldn't say he's my favourite (SRV is) but John 5, Marilyn Manson's former guitarist is an amazing guitarist, and nobody seems to know about it... To put his diversity and skill in perspective:

Just had a quick scan of the fav guitar players list and would agree with the usual SRV, Hendrix etc

I dont recall seeing Jeff Buckley anywhere hes definitely worth a mention. He could cover all the styles from rock, soul, blues, jazz and even slide guitar. Also he could play in various different open tunings and was notorious for creating his own chords. True master of the guitar.

Three off the top of my head:

    Chuck Berry

    Eddie Van Halen

    Ritchie Blackmore

How about the amazing Tim Renwick

    Ronald Jones

    Nels Cline

    Jonny Greenwood

    Thom Yorke
    Steven Drozd
    Kevin Shields

Much respect for Dimebag, but I would never sit down and think, "I'd love to listen to some Pantera right now". He's a savage player though, the only 'shredder' who would ever catch my attention.

It's pretty difficult to make a list.

Eric Johnson - great tone, technique and ear. Cliffs of Dover anyone?
Joe Satriani - Easiest rock instrumentalist to listen to, anyone can listen to Joe
Derek Trucks - Best reknowned for slide. He can make the guitar sound like a soul singer belting it out!
Darrell Abbott "The Dime" - Theres no-one else that can successfully put the 2 words 'groove' and 'metal' together without sounding crap
Zakk Wylde - Great technique and energy, solo's with Ozzy are song's of their own. Very good acoustic stuff too
Steve Vai - Rythymically makes his guitar phrases sound like a person talking
Nuno Bettencourt - Very under-rated, very awesome
Rory Gallagher - Presence, power, emotion. You can nearly tell what kind of person he was by listening to how he plays.
Yngwie Malmsteen - Douche yes, boring yes, but technically great, check out the classical thing he did
James Hetfield - The best metal rythym guitarist ever
I could go on for days........
And of course Jimi Hendrix - Inspired legends to pick up the guitar

    and

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSj3dZ0oUmU&feature=channel One of my guitar heros.

Mark Mcguigan, guitar teacher in Uk. Incredible and inspiring player

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6K4BB0uCups

Neither of these are famous but they really should be. They make some of the likes of Hammet and hendrix look like amatuers.

I Also love Satch, Nuno, Wylde and yngi malmsteen to name a few.
