Amateur question! What is "crossing"?

Hi all, I've just recently started cycling on my new Trek 1.2 and I noticed that the chain seemed to be rubbing against something as I pedalled. I called the shop where I bought it and was told I was "crossing", something to do with the chain being at an angle when I changed in to certain gears. Does this make any sense??…
