Can anyone reccomend (sp?) a good hairdresser for curly hair? I've had way too many bad cuts, and my hair currently has a lot of split ends because I'm afraid to get it cut. So...any good curly hairdressers?

i have wavy hair thats not really curly or straight. The last time i went to peter marks i told the girl I didnt want it straightned as it doesnt suit me that way. She didnt know what to do with me although she claimed to have the same type of hair herself - i left the hairdressers with a roughly dried mop.

    never again!

I had the same problem as you misssouthside. I was recommended Karl in Zoo in the Georges St ARcade. And he turned out to be really good. He seriously knows exactly what he's doing, and he even said he really enjoys cutting curly hair. Mine is kind of a strange curl too, fairly ringletty, so if he could manage that he can manage anything I'd say! I've only been once so far, but I will go back to him.

Sounds good to me! I think I have the same type of curl as you, so it's all good. How much does it cost for cut and blow-dry?

Nicola in Ozlo (also in Georges St Arcade) did a lovely job on my wavy straight hair.
She has curly hair herself, so I'd imagine she'd be good on curly hair.
Cut and blow dry is about 50 euro...

I have wavy/curly hair (depending on length) and have tried Natural Cut in Wicklow Street. They are very good, and alternative. They dont wet the hair so they see directly how the curls fall. Nice atmosphere, no blaring music.

I'm going to get my hair done in one of those places in Geogres St. then! I'll let yis know how I get on.

Due to my hair type, there's no new styles i can get though :(

See I have very very very thick hair! It's not quite curly, not quite straight and not quite wavy! Straightening/blowdrying it is the best way to get it to look half decent but I don't do it often cos it's bad for my hair. Can anyone recommend me what to do with it? It's quite long at the moment (lots of split ends) but I wouldn't be able to get it shorter than shoulder length or else I'd look like a clown (the thickness would make it poof out) and i don't want it very short cut like a boy. (Shaving is out of the question here too!) I don't even have a fringe so I'm thinking of that? But then again it would just curl up and go frizzy! Grr...

I'm going to try out the Natural Cuts place on Wicklow Street...did a bit of research on naturallycurly.com, and it says you should get your hair cut dry. So Natural Cuts sounds very appealing. I'll letcha know how I get on. Thanks for the help everyone!

    OP
Just wondering if you have any feedback on Natural Cuts on Wicklow St?
Did you get your hair cut there in the end, If so how did you get on?
Would be interested to hear if they did a good job, As I've been trying to find
somewhere that will cut my hair dry for ages

I have very curly, kinda ringletty hair, I think I'll try Zoo in Georges St. arcade. If I specifically asked for Karl would I get him?

I went to the Natural Cut of the recommendation of this thread. Just got it done last week. Best hair cut I've had in as long as I can remember. The guy I went to was Oliver and he does seem to know how to cut curly hair. It cost me €65 though which is steep for a dry cut, but as I said already I'm the happiest I've been with a haircut in a long time.

Don't talk to me about Peter Marks they don't know anything about curly hair. Colm in The Room Hair Design Studio, 23 Aungier Street, Dublin 2, tel: 01 4789623 is only brilliant not too pricy and a nice relaxing place to get your hair done.

Oh how long, how thick and how curly is your hair?
I've never had anyone who specialises in curly hair cutting mine, mine ranges from wavy to tight tight nearly afro ringlets.

Hi Ginny. My hair is half way between my shoulders and my boobs. It was all the one length and I was so scared to get it layered in case I'd have half of it chopped off. But he kept the length and put some layers in. My hair is quiet curly and similar to this.

Thanks for that, I'd say mine is a little tighter more like this or this but just a bit thicker.

re natural cut on wicklow st - got my longish curly hair cut last week and very happy with it. Strange to get it cut while its dry but it definitely makes sense! They'll talk to you first to see what YOU want and these guys know what theyre doing. Defo recommend it. Excellent place too; very chilled :p

I've had my fair share of peter marks disasters as well, they definitely don't seem to do well with curly hair. Couple years ago, when I was very naive about hair care, I got an offer of a free hair cut in the peter mark's school. It was probably free because they never usually get someone with curls. I was told she was an advanced student nearly complete with her training and would have an instructor with her at all times. She spent a good hour deciding how to tackle my frizz and so thinned my hair. There was at least 2 instructors by her at all times, which should have been a hint and they kept talking among themselves. :/

It looked great right after she finished, but it didn't last long. I found out when I went to a professional she had thinned one side more then the other. It's not as noticeable because my curls are quite thick, but It didn't stop the hairdresser giving me a good tongue lashing for being an idiot. I'm thinking of trying natural cuts from recommendation of this thread.

Based on the reccomendations for Natural Cuts Wicklow St, I'm going to make an appointment. Have had the worst cut ever, one side of my hair is totally thinned and she layered the other side, its a total disaster and as i am trying to grow this mop dont want to get it cut. Can anyone give me a name to ask for ?

I'm pretty sure the guy who done my hair's name was Oliver. There are two guys working there, he was the younger one.

Just want to update my experience of the Natural Cut. Went back to get my hair cut as I was so happy with the last time I got it cut. Got it cut by a girl this time and was quiet disappointed. It seems she came from the school of do not understand what "I'm trying to keep my hair long and I don't want much of the length". So I'm back to square one with the trying to get it long.

Have been struggling myself to find a hairdresser that can cut curly hair nicely.
I found a recommendation on Beaut.ie for a salon in city centre called Naturelle - tried them and really liked the cut I got and the curly blowdry and all for just €35!
I've come out of another salon before having paid €90 and looking like a 10 year old cut my hair! Really good recommendations on that website Beaut.ie in the section Rate Your Hairdresser!
    :):):)

I used 2 hate getting my hair cut because my curly hair always ended up looking like a frizzy mess but i tried going 2 gerard paul in goasttown dublin and they seemed 2 really know what 2 do with curly hair. I had the habit of just sticking wit a boring hair style as i didnt think that there was that much you could do with hair as curly as mine but they gave me a completly new look and i luv it! It wasnt expensive either. There is a 20% discount from mon-wed for students so i ended up only paying 36 euro!:D
Would defo recommend 2 every1 wit curly hair!

I heard these are really good I had curly hair before I got it dreaded its so hard to find someone or products that are good for curls, coconut leave in conditioner or jojoba natural shampoo is great for bounce

Which leave in coconut conditioner you use?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19 DreadsinDublin

I don't use this for curls anymore because my hair is in dreads now but I use to use the one from boots it worked wonders for my curls.... jojoba natural shampoo from health store is really good I cannot recommend that enough :)

The Auzzie Hair Care range use a lot of jojoba in their products, especailly their shampoo and conditoner for culy hair. I find John Freda's Hair Serum terrific to tame the frizz factor when it's put on immediately after washing your hair. My hair currently looks like a mushroom after a disaster of a "trim" at Peter Marks. I have found that most hair dressers just hate dealing with curl hair full stop.

i have had disasters in whetstone, lunatic fringe, house of colour, peter mark, and a good few other places.

    any recommendations?

Got my frequently referred to 'akward frizzy hair' cut in the natural cut recently after great sister advice. Loved the cut and god help the young lady but she did not once insult my locks but fond positivity in my haircut and created the perfect style. I was awear going in it could b expensive but alas after discretely finding out in conversation that I was presently out of work I received a discount. It was a Monday but dont feel it was a early week discount. Great Cut Great surroundings Great company.
