    wtf!

Is it really such a surprise that the yanks would take a primary interest in any undermining reports from post-election Iran making their way out into the world?

What I find harder to believe is their CEO telling us that those requests had no bearing on their maintenance re-scheduling...

    FAIL..,!!!

    DoS = Denial of Service

Well... I read up on it on that Goggle website (which, as it turns out isn't just a swimming supply site) and I believe it goes something like this:

A DOS attack is when someone keeps attacking the Disk Operating System of a computing device. So in this case some man named Twitter has had his computer DOSed which would be rather annoying if you were him. Although having said that, Twitter is a pretty silly nickname so he's probably used to bullying at this stage.

Simple solution I suppose would be to stop whoever is messing with his computing device from getting into his house. I would suggest locking the door and maybe putting a security word lock mechanism on his computing device.

I seen an interesting piece on Newsnight last night

apparently during the Iran protests a few months ago, Twitter was due to be taken offline for maintainance but the US State Dept demanded that they postponed it until the protests were over

and it's not just a theory either, Twitter's CEO is the one that said it during the interview

    wtf!

Twitter was being used to keep information flowing within, and about, Iran as Iranian television, mobile networks and other such infrastructure was taken down as the protests went on.

Twitter maintenance was scheduled for middle of the night US time, which would have been middle of the day in Iran. Twitter decided to switch that around, thus delaying the maintenance, out of good will.

It wasn't down to any government pressure afaik.

Ongoing denial-of-service attack 2 hours ago

We are defending against a denial-of-service attack, and will update status again shortly.

Update: the site is back up, but we are continuing to defend against and recover from this attack.

Update (9:46a): As we recover, users will experience some longer load times and slowness. This includes timeouts to API clients. We’re working to get back to 100% as quickly as we can.

    :)

Well they wouldn't say it was, but I find it highly suspect tbh

Though to be fair, as a rule I don't trust anything to do with US foreign policy so maybe I'm biased

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/newsnight/8186747.stm

watch from 3:18, he seems a bit edgy answering that question

I'll give that a watch later.

Though from using Twitter at the time, I think there would have been outrage among the wider user base had they gone ahead with that downtime. Iran protests was THE hot topic on Twitter at the time. To take it down right in the middle of those protests would have upset a lot of people.

And while there was certainly a noticable push from both sides of the
Iran debate to get certain topics and "news" spread throughout the network, I really think the system is just far too open for a single viewpoint propaganda campaign to have any great success. The counter-argument is always only a tweet, or re-tweet, away.

Facebook apparently was down at the same time also.

That was down to the extra traffic it was receiveing from people rushing onto Facebook because they couldn't access their Twitter account.

It still seems to be semi-down - I was trying to tweet and my beak is clamped shut with a spinning wheel of death; trying to Follow and it won't do that either.

Apparently the attack was from Russians trying to get at a Georgian blogger with accounts on Facebook and Twitter.
