Would it be a good idea if Taylor retired?

That was one of the worst finals I've ever seen. Totally one sided and very boring! The man seems to be too good and I find his matches really boring at the moment! I felt like turning off the final half way through as it was totally boring (hate to say it)! If he retired we would have closer matches all the time and it would be more interesting! Thoughts please?

i'd say give it two more years then he should, he would be a great commentator and analyst. i have been saying for a while now that i don't watch Taylor's games anymore (so i have missed so many 9 darters:mad::mad:)
cuase that are very boring, you like seeing a hard fought game but with Taylor is looks like he does'nt enjoy it sometimes.

you can't hate him for being good, he puts in more practice then anyone else i just think he's kinda making the sport predictable, you know he's gonna win and which is worse so do most of the player he plays casen point Terry Jenkins 2night, he had already lost the game before he got up on stage

When Taylor developed his game years ago with his 'stacking' of darts in the treble no one else took it on ( or couldn't) and he has won everything that he deserved to and will win more. Retire, no! Let the rest catch up!

The best darts player ever, I dont like him though , not because I'm jealous or anything but because I dont like his personality! He's just too good at times which makes for boring matches 95% of the time! Somebody please step up to the plate!

+1..why should he suffer when he has worked so hard on his game..
went to a peter manley night and he stressed how much taylor practices to the point where the rest of the pro's look up to him..

why do people always knock the top guy when he has worked hard to get there??...

I would much rather watch one really top player playing to the best of his ability than watch a bunch of relatively averages perfomances by people who can achieve much more.

Taylor has commented on more than one occassion about the amount of effort he puts in compared to others. Its not his fault the other players are not putting in the effort to try catch him. Great sportsman see a challenge and then put in the work to try overcome that challenge but unfortunately no one is doing that at the moment. Taylor shouldn't be retiring because he is too good, not a chance, he deserves to win everything he does, even if it completly shows up everyone else.

There are many players with great potential coming through and the sport in general has huge potential but it needs the rest of the players to start taking it as serious as Taylor.

Id agree with that .Theres just something about his personality that annoys me.
    He comes across as confrontational.

Why would you retire when your top of your game?

I think there is a better chance of finding thr cure of cancer then there is talyor being beaten right now, the other comments about stacking are spot on, barney is trying it but not doing it good enough. no one is doubting that Taylor is the hardest working player in the game, but how entertaining is it to see one player win over and over again and with ease, like i said before it's very boring

During the match tonight the commentators where saying about giving Taylor a handicap in games which got me starting this thread! I like to see close games not one sided boring matches.

I actually dont like Taylor personality but as a darts player well he is the best, and although him winning may be boring we shouldn't be asking the question of him retiring, we should be asking what do the other players need to do to be able to compete with him seriously.

For me they all have the ability to be scoring big and hitting the doubles when they need to but the difference between Taylor and everyone else is concentration. For me the physical condition of alot of the players is a problem when it comes to concentration, in the semi's it was easy to see and the commentators also mentioned how the heat got to Jenkins and King. This is obviously going to effect concentration, and being in a better physical condition will help players concentration. Fair enough Taylor isn't the pinical of fitness, but its not effecting his game, it clearly is for others. There have been a few times where I cant help but think to myself some of the players just look physically uncomfortable when playing, such as Lewis on a few occassions. If the players want to take the game seriously I think this is something which should be looked at. I'm not saying all players should be able to run a few miles, but they should be able to compete and not let their physcial condition effect their concentration.

If you're the best at your chosen sport, if you're beating everyone that challenges you...how do you act? if you go the modest route then people will think you're putting on an act...I like Taylor tbh...I always cheer for the person playing him - for the good of the game - but he's a decent ambassador for the sport. Without Taylor, i'm not sure it would be as popular a sport as it is.

I think there are players that, in practise, would be up to the taylor challenge, but when the bright lights come on, and they see taylor coming at them, the harlem globetrotter syndrome comes into play and they crumble. It's a pity really...maybe some of them could benefit from some mind coaching or hypnotising... "there is no taylor....you're playing Mardle..."

I don't think Taylor should retire at all. Not in the least because he is too good.

Barney gave him a very good match early on in the Las Vegas desert classic and he looked like he was going to beat him silly in the beginning so it can be done.

Taylor however kept his cool and kept on trying and not so long after that, he was in charge and Barney got into a tantrum with himself when it was around 7-9 against him and started chucking his darts at the board just to get rid of them .

He lost the rag again when Jenkins was beating him Friday night but to a lesser (but still noticeable) degree.

The rest of them know that he is far ahead of them in ability and concentration and despite all their bravado before matches, they must know deep down that it is a very uphill task to beat him.

That is not Taylors problem however. He has worked very hard to get where he is and in any sport, the day you say that the bar should not be raised any higher is the day you kill that sport IMO.

He will take some beating but it can be done. You just need to find someone able to play better than him and that is the key ;).

As other posters have said I think Taylor should only retire when he wants to. I've never understood why some people find it boring to watch someone win over and over - it's like watching a Schumacher/Woods/Federer etc in their prime - for me it's a privilege to be alive in their era and to see them push the boundaries on whats possible. Taylor is the same - even though he's the best he's always trying to better himself.

I thought the interview after the King match was v interesting - he changed from the gold to black darts because they helped the red of the treble 20 to stand out a little be more - he said it probably only makes a tiny bit of a difference but to me thats incredible -> someone that's already that good trying different things to make tiny improvements.

As said above, taking away the best in any sport when they're in their prime would lessen that sport overall I think. Should Usain Bolt stop running 100m because nobody can touch him?

why should he retire if players are not good enough to beat him maybe they should give it up instead.mardle waste of space van de voort worse pro i ever seen klassen biggest hyped up player in recent years has done nothing gary anderson the next big thing bottles it at later stages of games, priestly over the hill barney going through a rough patch , part going backwards to, jenkins plays well till he meets a taylor in the final ,dudbridge gone, need i go on if there not good enough why should taylor retire so they can look good.

I know it's not taylors fault he's so much better than other player but i have to admit it's getting harder to look at these tournaments, it's just not enjoyable to see players get beat so easily.:(

I don't think that darts would be on the same level now if it wasn't for Taylor. Go up to your parents, random friends etc who know nothing about darts, and 95% will know who he is. Doubt many or indeed any will know who Wade or Barney are....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 945 ✭✭✭padr81

No way, taylor is the benchmark the inspiration and IS the PDC, if it wasn't for Taylor hte likes of Wade etc... would never of hit 100 averages, he keeps lifting the sport and others have to follow. Taylor will continue to push the bar and its man up, put in the work or f**k off and so it should be, to be a professional you should act like a pro. No one has a devine right to win a major if they don't work as hard as taylor. The top natural players need to do as he says, put their head down and do some work. Taylor is dragging darts kicking and screaming away from the drink and have a few games culture and its him thats made it a professional sport.

    yes and no.

no because he is the benchmark for others to follow and he does get unbelievable averages.why should he retire when he is at the top of his game.

yes because it would make it more watchable and more exciting and most importantly it might push sid waddell closer to retirement too.

Not a chance. The man is an absolute legend and I for one enjoy watching him play and listening to his post match interviews. Its not arrogance - he is the best, he puts in the work and gets his just rewards.
Id say it frustrates him seeing the guys with similar exceptional talent just wasting it by being out of shape, not in the right frame of mind etc.
Its a professional sport - be professional about it. Eat proper, get in shape, see a sports psychologist if it helps you get in the zone. There are big rewards financially for whoever wins these competitions. If you look at the order of merit all of the top 10 are clearing €100k+ a year out of the darts. Taylor is clearing €500k+.
Raw Talent will only take you so far, but christ if you have it exploit it to its fullest.

i think its a little unfair to be so critical of certain pros. i for one think
gary anderson is an exceptional player and a far more naturally gifted
player than most if not all, includeing maybe mr.taylor. anderson has
left the comfort zone that is the bdo. if in 18months he hasnt beaten
taylor in a major tv final i would be amazed, truely. darts needs taylor
he is a phenomenen, a genius, but he has all the ingrediants,1 the ability
2 the bottle and 3 and most important the luck. with wade and anderson
and sorry king now playing at 100plus ave.the games in good hands.
this is why i think he wont retire and im sure he wud agree.

No he definitely shouldn;t retire. The man is probably the reason darts is so popular right now and he is the reaosn the standard has improved so much since the 80's. He is a fantastic player and he has done so much for the sport that he will always have my respect.

Having said that though it still doesn't take away from the fact that the mans games, for the most part, are incredibly boring the watch. There is no enjoymet watching taylor hammer some player. There is no one that loves darts as much as me but I lose interest in games that Taylor plays and I go off and do something else with the match on in the background.

It's not Taylors fault, he deserves everything he has done, it's the other player that need to step up. Still boring though ;)

It would be similar to what formula1 has become since Schumacher retired.

Can't see Taylor retiring for a long time yet with the huge prizemoney in the game at the moment. I agree it can be boring to watch his games at times but that isn't his fault at the end of the day! Must say that i'm looking forward to the World Masters on BBC in 6 weeks time,a much more open tournament even if the standard isn't as high as the PDC.
