I think its technically not called the Angelus but a time for prayer which reflects all religions.

Just to make sure all the sheep dont get upset while worshipping the sun :)

Use it as a moment of reflection. Alternatively watch something else for a minute.

I find it's a great opportunity to catch up on some news headlines from the UK...

The way people stop and look towards the sky in anticipation of some divine cumshot is the funniest thing RTE have produced in years

Clearly Dobbo and the rest of the RTE news team need that extra minute to adjust their laptop screens and for Dobbo to give Colm the name of a good porno for him to whack off to before he comes in with his sports news.

    Duh.

excellent. i'm using this the next time i rant on about it down the local.

Because over 3 million people in the 2006 census said that they were Roman Catholic while another couple of hundred thousand said that they were of other Christian religion. This means that even athiests are probably still filling out "Catholic" on the census just because they were raised that way.

Because there are actually people in Ireland who pray. Why should RTE stop showing something that a small percentage of the population don't watch or like. It does no harm to anyone and it is only on for 1 minute so why do people complain?

Theres plenty of things on RTE I object to, y'know what i do?

    I change the fucking channel.

It's doing no harm, it's not showering anyone with anything, not even holy jism.

    Quit yer bellyachin'.

i didn't mean to come across as passionately as i have on this subject. just seems odd to me to have this reflection time at 6pm. why is it scheduled just before the main evening news? directed to all

You mean you can't tolerate a series of 18 dings of a bell on the news with pictures? :pac:

You must get really riled up at the religious services on RTÉ on Sunday mornings :D

Really though, some people just respect that Ireland has had a healthy Judeo-Christian tradition since roughly the 4th century whether they are Christian or not.

As thelordofcheese said, you're not being forced to watch it.

An atheist who uses gods name wondering why people can't take a minute out

Just think of it as Hammer time

It's one of those little things that makes Ireland a little different, must confuse tourists no end.

Personally I'm more upset about the three minutes of un-godly ads

and as others have suggested you can catch the UK headlines, flick back catch the RTE ones and decide which news you want to see

Oh yeah , considering RTE's finances it is cheap television

I don't know, but it's hilarious trying to explain to my foreign friends wtf it's about.

"Why are all these people staring into space for no reason?"

    Lulz.

    No, no, no,

    The Angelus is about Mary.

Someone could make a dead good parody of the Angelus minute with all those potentially catastrophic pauses and wistful eyes cast skywoods/into middle distance.

Lets be honest, its a throw back to the days when the priests in this country visibly ruled the state from the headquarters in Armagh.
So the bells were introduced to remind us all that above all, God rules supreme and calls us all to pay homage to him right when they can get us altogether - at the tea table!

The muppets still haven't kopped themselves on that the rest of the world has moved on however (one example: HERE - at least some governments have the balls to stand up to them: HERE)

As for the modern days bells on the tv - I don't get annoyed any more.
I just turn RTE off all the time. Fcuk 'em!
