College in the US (Illinois)

Hi, I've been accepted for college in the US (Illinois specifically) from my Junior cert. and the ACT (my Leaving Cert. results will assure me continuing my studies there at a later time; I just took it). I'm going mainly because I met my significant other while they were studying here, and I wanted to go back with them. I've been to Illinois before and love it so much; I've been to the college and it's amazing. I love my significant other's family and friends but I'm scared.

I'm worried mainly because of my future. I can't wait for college and I know I'll love it but when I'm done with my student visa, what then? I know it's kind of silly to think beyond 4-5 years, but I hate not having things definite. What can I do after my student visa to make sure I remain in the US with my significant other. (Our relationship has been serious for more than a year now, so it is important to me)

    arcano,

Upon your graduation you can do a few things (or will have to do them):

A.) Return to Ireland. After you are finished with your degree figure out if you really want to stay in the U.S. If you feel you don't want to, then there is no worries about your visa.

B.) Return to school. You may find you want to pursue graduate education here in the U.S. as well, and if you do, cheers. There a many, many great schools to choose from. In that case, your visa will be extended to reflect the length of you grad program.

C.) If you get out of school, you have a set time period in which to obtain employement (I believe this all hinges on which visa you have entering the US as there are a few different types). This can be very challening, I went to school with a person Guyana and they had been in the US through high school and college. Still, once he graduated, he had to find a job in the field of his degree within 6 months or he would have to leave the country.

D.) If you are still with your significant other and things are good, and they are a U.S. citizen, there is always the option of marriage. I dont know how it works or the time period, but marriage to a US citizen would make your visa obsolete obviously.

The international office at your school should be able to help you with all the questions as you are hardly the first international to have them. If not, Chicago is not all that far from most place in the state (if you arent there already) and almost every US government agency has a major branch located in the city. They are easy to work with (easier since you are Irish...and you're in Chicago).

    Best of luck!
