Holding a degree vital to teach English in China?

Can some one clear this up for me. Why is it vital to hold a degree to be able to teach legitimately in China? It is stated in most teaching recruitment web sites although it can be any form of degree.

The reason I ask this is because I cant see how holding any form of degree can benefit your teaching ability. I am considering teaching in China but I hold no degree and I feel its unfair how my certification in a highly skilled trade is not considered compared to a degree holder in fashion design. Not that hold hold anything against fashion, its just an example. Also is a diploma from a 1 year VEC/PLC course any benefit?

I am thinking about doing a TEFL course but since I have uncovered this degree stumbling block I wonder is it worth my while?

    Thanks.

Legitimately, yes you have to have a degree. The reality however is that in China the law can be pretty, lets say, flexible especially as demand far exceeds supply. I know one person teaching there who doesnt have a degree and by Chinese standards is on an extremely good wage (10,000 RMB per month).
