Gay is a swear word if anything else. I think that shows people's general peception of "gays".

And do you think this is a good or a bad thing? And actually, what do you think are people's perceptions of "gays" (are they different to gays?)

i wonder would you have the same opinion on abortion IF you were a woman and IF one day you were raped

I thought one of the two extenuating circumstances allowing abortion in Ireland was the child being conceived through rape?

On the gay marriage thing, homosexuals should certainly be allowed the right to have all the financial and legal rights a heterosexual couple have.
I haven't thought enough about whether they should be allowed to adopt or not, to have a valid opinion.

    When did this happen?

Also I know for me, that still doesn't clarify your earlier post.

I know plenty of people who use "gay" as a "swear word", but they all still agree that same-sex couples should be allowed marry. I think basing the "general perception of gays" on how a word is used is making assumptions.

"you're gay", Fag, Bender, Queer, fudge packer, homo.
All common derogatory words/phrases with homosexual connotations or meaning.

You get my drift. The perception of gay people is that they are weirdo's.

I'm speaking generally here. Alot of people are of this opinion and use this language.

I'd prefer to see marriage left as, or reverting to a religious thing, rather than a state defined thing.

Whereas all couples (heterosexual and homosexual) would have the right be recognised as such in a civil union by the state - which would confer all legal, financial and other rights upon them, if that makes sense.

Hopefully gay couples will have the right to marriage anyway, though if it comes, I'd see it as more likely being enforced by a higher court that Ireland.

Whereupon the same people who are always against this (Youth Defense and the rest) will prophesy terrible downfall, the apocalypse and so on.

Then things won't really change at all, apart from gay couples having the same rights as the rest of us, and they'll forget and latch on to something else to protest.

These are things i hope don't change.

Homosexuals have enough rights. What do they bring to the table...nothing. Main reason for any mammel to be here is to have kids.

You think people that don't pay their bills get away scot free? Of course they should go to jail. Otherwise it'll be a free for all with no one paying their bills. No consequence to breaking the law so why would they re pay they debts

There is loads of money put to health care its just wasted and no one has the balls to stand up to the unions and re organise our system .

Pay for your own childcare facilities.

Everything else should change. Legalise abortion, woman's right to choose. Porn is illegal, technically ...maybe but realisticly not a chance. Blasphemy's laws are a joke, a complete destruction of our rights to free speech and the country should separate church and state and become more secular.
Sorry if it's been mentioned, I read till your post and then had to reply.

The irony in your post is bolded for your convenience

The difference is, just because you don't legalise civil partnerships doesn't mean gay people will all of a sudden be straight and pro-create. They'll still be gay. So why not let them be gay but give them the same benefits as straight couples?
Abortion is the direct termination of the foetus which means you are allowing people who are willing and able to have babies, to kill them. Sort of goes against the whole "main reason any mammal is here is to have kids"

I'm willing to bet that it's less than 50% of the population who think that and therefore a minority opinion.

    Actually, here is the data:

"A survey carried out in 2008 showed that 84% of Irish people supported civil marriage or civil partnerships for gay and lesbian couples, with 58% (up from 51%) supporting full marriage rights in registry offices."

"A total of 54% believe the definition of the family unit in the Irish Constitution should be changed to include same-sex families."

I'm not sure, there isn't alot of gays in my neck of the woods.
But if they was I'm fairly sure it would be frowned upon.

You just keep digging that hole :D

I'd imagine a large portion of the population probably are uncomfortable with homosexuality, that being said, a large portion of the population are probably uncomfortable with OAPs having wild sex, doesn't mean we should clamp down on their rights ;)

Unless you have gaydar it's kind of hard for you to know if there are gays around.
Might be they keep a low profile in that case - where abouts are you?

It's kind of funny that so many people who consider "them thar gays" to be "weird" always expect gay people to be the most stereotypical flaming queen possible, and stand out so obviously.

No, they are not weirdo's - wonders why Ireland is still classed as backwards in some areas...

DB10 - another homophobe. Do you actually know any gay people? I think not...

This thread has gone a bit off topic. It's interesting however at how the bigots come out of the woodwork.

You think the lady doth protest too much? :D

I remember reading about a study where men were asked to fill out forms about their sexuality, how they felt about homosexuality etc and were then shown straight and gay porn, and their arousal to each monitored.

The researchers were surprised to find that a very high amount of men who identified as disliking gay people, and being disgusted by the act were also those most aroused by the gay porn.

    For whatever it's worth.

However isn't the very definition of Marriage an intimate and personal relationship between a man and a woman?

    Defined by whom?
    netwhizkid wrote: »
I think I was only on the lgb forum once and generally have little to do with homosexuals as there is a "guilty* by association" culture attached in our society.

You think Ireland is a liberal country but you would never post in the lgb forum for 'fear' of people thinking you were gay?
    netwhizkid wrote: »
*not that there is actually anything to be guilty of provided you are not religious of course.

According to my religion there is nothing wrong to be guilty about if a person is gay.

I still think you are a troll tbh, a better one then pighead but still.

"Seen any o' them thar gays recently Ezekiel?"

"Naw, they're all keepin a low profile...with their toned abs and pert butts"

"Mmmm....ya don't say....they better not lot me get my hands on them, that's for sure..."
