Setantas website and FAQ specifically state that they shall show barclays english premiership matches - which we now know to be false....the only hope they have is getting rights to the 3pm matches - say RTE are smiling!

RTE have not got 2 cents to rub together! They have a huge debt and they couldn't afford it even if they wanted to bid for the games.

So no, RTE will not be smiling!

I quoted the email that was sent from Setanta. I never mentioned the website.

interesting article in todays indo on the subject of setanta being able to bid for the 3pm matches. I suspect that unless the new irish operation is seperated from the parent company by the new owners asap it may not be able to bid because the parent company is in receivership....

another article in the irish times confirms that the magners league will be shown live by setanta but the rights for 2010-11 are up for auction.

Yes realise that - Just highlighting the different statements being made by Setanta and indeed some of the Setanta s carriers.

Theres been nothing but confusion and misleading statements in all media about the rights - without them you would have to fear for Setanta - long term only the viewer loses out by having to pay more.

on a side note, north of the border, it looks like celtic and rangers are gonna bid for the spl rights. could be just a bluff to see if sky/espn will increase their bid???

I hope Sky/ESPN call their bluff. The quality of the football in the SPL is so bad I'm surprised that the TV companies don't ask the SPL for payment just to show the matches!

The price Setanta paid for them originally was mental. Does anyone think Sky or ESPN actually would care if they didn't get them. I don't.

Exactly, to Sky/ESPN the SPL rights are just a small bonus if they get them. They won't lose sleep over this!

    Setanta wins Premier League rights

Setanta Sports Ireland has announced that it has won the rights to broadcast 33 English Premier League games in the Republic of Ireland next season.

Setanta UK was forced into administration last month after it failed to meet payments to the English and Scottish premier leagues.

The closure of Setanta UK meant the loss of 200 jobs but Setanta Sports Ireland has continued to broadcast in the Republic where it employs 180 people.

AdvertisementChief executive Niall Cogley said the news would clear up any 'confusion' about the future of Setanta in Ireland and that subscribers would continue to receive to 'best value premium sports service in Ireland'.

    Games confirmed :
    Blackburn v Manchester City
    Wigan v Manchester Utd
    Bolton v Liverpool
    Liverpool v Burnley
    Arsenal v Wigan
    Stoke v Manchester Utd
    Bolton v Tottenham
    Manchester Utd v Bolton
    Manchester City v Fulham
    Fulham v Liverpool
    Tottenham v Sunderland
    Chelsea v Wolverhampton
    Portsmouth v Manchester Utd

So now we have the nightmare scenario - to get all Premier League games in Ireland, viewers will have to subscriber to Sky, Setanta, and ESPN. Unless Setanta drops down to being basic level.

    Niall,

Please close Setanta Sports 1 for Irish subscibers.
Please make Setanta Ireland available to everyone on Satellite and Cable on all basic packages just like with UPC.
Forget about retaining pay television, move on.

    Kind regards,

If it is correct that nobody else put in a bid then nobody would have been showing them if Setanta just died.

Can't see anybody paying 3 subs - with ESPN having 46 games and Setanta only having 33 - some of which will undoubtedly be shown on Setanta Ireland - the only forward that I can see is some type of combined Setanta/ESPN offering

setanta will have slim chance of getting people to pay a premium for 33 fifth choice matches.... they should do a deal with sky and get on their basic pack and stay on the ntl basic pack.

depending on your choice of paper setanta either paid 750000(irish indo) and tv3 tg4 bid against them or 4million(irish times) and sky was the underbidder.

One wonders what setanta's new pricing structure will be..... any takers for 9.99 a month?

And if they don't join that pack, they have to pitch their subscription at a price people will go for. Not a price where they keep having to give special deals to people to retain them. I believe that figure cannot be over €7.99pm.

When you pick up any cable/satellites packages basic pay TV package you are given a certain amount of channel I think that one of those channels should be Setanta Ireland.
180 Irish jobs says they shouldn't die!

Where are those 180 jobs? A call centre?

750,000 per year and an est 4,000,000 million for 3 years?

No pricing structure, close SS1 and keep SI for basic subscriptions on all pay TV platforms. (And go FTA on DTT, defo help people go for DTT who are on Analogue Terrestrial).

I would say 750,000 is closer to the mark, it would be intresting to see what TG4 and TV3 bid and if they came close, if RTE did not bid it looks like they could struggle to win the rights for Champions League and other major rights in the next 3-4 years if the cutbacks continue. Oh and please RTE if you get the highlights again change the name of Premier Soccer Saturday it's stupid!

I guess the name is because of Monday Night Soccer and Premier Soccer Saturday, see what they are doing (It is stupid).

RTÉ have champions league rights for the next 3 season with both Setanta Hibernian and TV3.

I don't give a **** about the jobs. If setanta wasn't out to rob people maybe they would have kept all the jobs..

Its only for this coming season. the rights for the next 3 years are up for auction in september according to one of the articles. I wonder how serious a bidder sky were for them?

TV3 and RTE (and AFAIK Setanta) signed a 3 year agreement with TV3 getting Tuesday Nights, RTE getting Wednesday Nights and Setanta getting second choice for both Tuesday and Wednesday night. I however am only assuming its a 3 year deal, I could be wrong.

If you have a sky sports subscription you will have access to the Second Choice matches from Setanta (ON SKY SPORTS) hence why I believe that Setanta Ireland must become part of all basic Irish packages if it is to gain a stronger foot hold in the Irish market. Hence I also don't see why Sky would pick up the rights to the Irish Rights to Champions League when they pretty much have them already the same goes for ITV.

Irish viewers will have a choice between FTA RTÉ, TV3 and ITV1 with 2 subscriptions for Sky and Setanta, I think I would get the Sky Sports package over the Setanta one.

This thread is not about the Champions League rights. Can you keep this to a seperate thread as you are more than likely going to cause some confusion.

750k for over 30 3pm kickoffs and RTE didnt bid ? Madness.
They should get rid of Pat the Plank and use the money they save to buy the 3pm matches.

rte have no money seemingly they have spent it on 6nations gaa etc.... setanta can go take a running jump if they think that i will pay 15euro a month for 90% of the stuff i can get elsewhere either on s4c , utv or bbc(premiership excepted, skysports for that)
