Planning to watch a film on TV that you have on DVD beside you. Why?

I do this myself the odd time and not so sure why! Have heard a few people say they do it too. What I mean is say some film is going to be on later on RTE, it could be one you have seen before or new one, either way you have it on DVD right beside the TV, 1 minutes work getting it in and playing, yet you wait until it is being broadcast later and watch it then. Now you know you will be suffering ads, poorer quality picture, and a possibly cut film. On DVD you can pause for breaks when YOU want, better picture etc, so why watch on TV? (if you do)

Is it just utter laziness?, I heard one person suggest it was knowing that lots of people would be watching it at the same time, so it being some sort of "shared experience" like a concert, but I couldn't care less what the neighbours are watching. It would be more common if people are flicking around and the film just started, or it is half way through a film they are very familiar with- but even then why not get the DVD out instead.

I do the very same thing. And most of the time I end up giving out that they cut the movie for TV.

I know it would be better to get the DVD but I will still watch it on TV.

at least when you watch it on DVD you don't get bleedin' barry scott shouting at you to buy cillit bang every 15 mins, and sure on ITV don't they break in the middle of the film for the news? Fook that!

It's a convenience thing, you didn't have to get off your arse to stick on the DVD and the adverts give you time to make tea etc.
I mentioned before that I think it's a subconscious thing in which you can go to work/school the next day and there may be water cooler moments where you can talk about this film to someone because they watched it also, as opposed to just mentioning "I watched "X" on DVD last night" and they may not have seen it.

I think that its nice to be suggested a film to watch, especially when you have a big dvd collection cause it can be hard to choose something sometimes.

For me If there's a good film on TV (eg. a few weeks back T2 was on rte) It'll usually make me want to watch the film, but I cant stand ads so if I have the dvd I'll just stick that on instead (which I did with T2)

Probably laziness for me. I don't have to go messing around with DVDs, there are no DVD menus and there is no loading of the DVDs. You also have to watch those annoying Piracy ads on DVDs which you cannot skip. Also, with Sky+ it's so much easy to Play, Pause, Rewind and Fast forward movies because of the big buttons on the remote and you don't even have to look at the remote to pause it. With my DVD player remote, there is a million and one different buttons and they are tiny so you have to search the remote just to do a simple command.

Yeah, but most of the time it would have ended up more convenient to spend the short while getting the DVD in, and being able to pick your own breaks. Lots of ads these days seem to be different times, by the time you come back it is already on again, or else takes ages. Also you can pick a suitable time to pause in the film, often they will cut halfway during a scene.

Thats a good point, and good to see you did then pick the T2 DVD.

Yeah, its ironic that the piracy ads make pirate films more attractive. With divx just lash it in and bang you have the lion roaring at you.

I do the same, for whatever reason a movie is always more appealing to me on the television. I wouldn't put it down to being lazy, I think it's just good to see a dvd you've bought on the tv!

If a good film is coming up on TV I'll think to myself "Hey that looks good, I'll go pirate it and watch it on my computer so I don't have to deal with ads every 15 minutes"

Don't watch much TV of late given the extensive dvd collection but I did catch myself doing the same thing a couple years back.
Could never but a definite reasoning on it but I guess there was always idea in my mind that I could change the chanel if I wanted to and watch the DVD later, whereas putting in the DVD seemed somehow more of a commitment :P

Have to admit I do the same thing, and I wouldn't even put it down to laziness... sometimes I want to watch a DVD but can't decide which one to put on... Then when I do put it on I get distracted half-way through...

Whereas on telly, even if it's a movie I wouldn't bother even pirating on DVD, I'll sit down and watch the whole thing.

I think it's to do with the fact that with a DVD in the back of your head you always know you needn't watch it now, you can always watch it later... I also enjoy DVDs better if someone else puts it on {for themselves and I happen to be there too} for some reason...

Another thing is I can enjoy a movie I've seen a few times before, if watching it with someone who's seeing it for the first time... But if they lose interest I'll probably lose interest myself too

If a film I own is on TV I'd probably watch it. Not laziness or anything. Maybe as another poster said it's nice to get a film suggested. Hey,, you can always flick between channels.

Do it myself, probably laziness on my part, I don't want to have to look through a large dvd collection for the film that is going to be on already at the touch of a button, also I can just jump station if I get bored of it. Usually though I am just watching it cos its the best of a bad lot to choose from. TV is mostly crap of late.

If I notice a film I have on dvd is coming up on tv and I haven't seen it for a while I'll probably go get the dvd and watch it before it's on tv rather than wait, in fact I did that with Hero last week.

The only tv channels I'd watch films on if I didn't have them on dvd are BBC 1 and 2 - no breaks and no on screen logo. Either that or record Film4 and edit out the ads before I watch

I think it has to do with you have decided to watch it and almost set a idea in your head to watch it but if it come on the telly its like ah sure Die hard is on ill watch that. Same with radio with me if a song come on I like ill think to myself what a class song but I put a cd on with the same song on it I wouldnt nearly be as bothered with it. Maybe its because its unexpected.

I think people front a distaste but subconsciously they want the adds. When you think about it adds do a few positive things. Firstly they help you keep track of time, some people may have an unknown fear of getting lost in an uniterrupted film, but with adds they shape the movie into neat 15 minute blocks that make your brain happy. Secondly the adds give you the freedom to continuously ensure that there is nothing better on a different channel without losing track of the movie.
