found them too pricey and rarely went to them.
Why is it that none of these places try reducing prices before going broke?

I have to say was reading the thread and I dont know what type of sandwiches your buying for €6. I go to the one in Finglas every day it's on St Margarets Road their sandwiches are €3.95 take out and €4.95 sit in. Granted the trippledecker and some of their bigger sandwiches cost more. The services is always fast and good. These have been their prices for 2 year. The also are running a take out deal of a sandwich, crisps and a can of coke etc for €5 now thats value for money!

Granted there is another O'Briens 5 min up the raod in Charlestown Shopping centre and it's filthy and service is ****. I think it depends on the the Franchisees who own them I really hope they dont close down the Finglas one! Where will I go for lunch??
So I assume you own the St. Margarets Road franchise then?

etc is 7up ,fanta sorry for having an opinion I thought that's what boards is for
I think experience has thought us to be weary of people whose first post is an extremely positive review of a particular establishment, I'm sure it's nothing personal!

Good riddance to them! Apart from totally ripping people off with their tiny portions and inflated prices, i found their premises to be pokey and always too warm. The staff in some of their shops were also quite narky.

I did enjoy the Chicken and Bacon Tripledeckers myself. Haven't had one in a good 3 years or so and never paid more than €4.80 for one (takeout). I don't know where everyone's getting this €6 a sandwich lark from.

Having said that, there are a few branches I've seen which I'd never eat in - the Dunlaoghaire and Stephen's Green ones were manky. If I'm not mistaken, both were closed down at least once for hygene breaches as well.

I'm quite apathetic to their demise. If everyone's so concerned about buying Irish, get a loaf of Pat the Bakers, some Denny ham and some Dubliner cheese and do your thing for a fraction of the price.

i stopped going there when i ordered a tuna melt, and was told i couldn't have mayo as they can't put mayo in the oven, unlike any other deli, anywhere in the country that i've been...

also crap cakes, crap selection of cold drinks, got a few sambo's that clearly had the previous days bread

    that was it for me...

Boland's on south anne st,how i miss thee!

anyway, good riddance cause for the same money, munchie's left them for dust!

Sandwiches are for people with no drive or self respect..usually students or fat women who think a pound of mayonaise in a foot-long baguette is healthy in some way.
Panninis are for people who wear sunglasses indoors.
Pizzas are for fat people who like being ripped off.
And crepes...dont get me started on crepes!

surely you exclude sweet crepes from it? savoury i can understand but the sweet sure they're a dessert.

In fairness, I'll miss the toasted chcken and bacon triple-decker. You didn't have to pay extra to toast it, in UCD at least.

i have to say after reading this entire thread i'm pretty saddened by how many people are not hapy with o'brien's and a few who are THANKFULLY feeling bad for the employees.
I am currently an employee in O'Brien's and we are 1 of the busiest i've seen. (will not specify obviously) seeing this thread and news really scares me about my job. I have to say i love my job and the staff i work with are the friendliest staff i,ve seen (from a consumers perspective and employee) i see behind the scenes and the goings on that most people wouldnt and i have to say for our branch of the franchise there is absolutely nothing to worry about none of this "stale bread" or "tiny portions" or "left from the last few days" stuff that ppl r comming out with. Our boss does not stop stressing on how to address to the customer. And wht people ask for we bend over backwards for them! And i dont know what o'briens everyone is talking about when they say the staff r narky...some of the customers can be worse! but we smile and say our friendly "hi how can i help you?" even if it kills us. And to answer "PUNCHDRUNK's" question on why we do not toast mayo is because we have a strict letter from the irish health and saftey saying that anything containing mayo or egg CANNOT BE TOASTED due to egg being in mayo. the egg is first heated to a certain temperature to make it hard boiled and if we reheat that as out ovens are EXTREMELY HOT we could cause the customer food poisoning. so it is for your safety and it's not o'briens rule its the health boards. how other cafés get away with it i'll never know. anyways i'm holding onto this job by the last thread otherwise im screwed. now off to work. x

Well I think most people would agree that the standard does vary quite a lot between sites.
It sounds like you work in a busy one and that it is well run so hopefully it will be saved for the moment anyways!

So how come Tripledeckers are toasted then? Isn't there Mayonnaise in them?

Good thing is we no longer have to hear Brody Sweeney hawking his rags to riches story around to any radio station . Sold poor food to people who aren't used to any better.

Not a hope unless they ban fast food joints from opening after midnight on weekends.

Tesco would probably be a bigger job loss to the Irish people. Your logic is flawed mate.

    2) re; flaw logic......a bit like your brain.
No right minded people harbour or support these posts wishing job loses on people regardless of where they work.

He went through a heavy phase of that, didn't he? Served with a big dollop of smug sauce, on a bed of natural full grain snideness.

Firstly, what logic?? "F off FFS .... Wishing the demise of people's business and peoples Jobs". That's a simple statement. There's no logic involved whatsoever.

Secondly, how is the fact that there are larger companies in country that could go bust, of any relevance?

Go back to school, post grad mod!

Exactly. Slagging off the managment is fine especially in O Brien's case but about 800 jobs are at risk here which is very serious.

I can't believe people are hoping that companies fail!

O Briens only employed 20 people not 800. Many branches will set up independently as some have already done. Conscientious staff will find their way back into the business while the duds that have caused much of their downfall will end up on the dole que.

The fillings were cheap, the bread was sh1te,the coffe so so. The price was outrageous. How they managed to survive so long is a mystery.

I know but 800 are at risk which is what I said. It will be very hard for franchisees to set up on their own if O Briens go to the wall.
Suppliers, premises and brand come through O Briens.

I hope they can just get rid of the underperforming sites and save the company.
I think there is a lot of potential there.
