anybody know if these tyres are as good as they say they are?i am getting a hyrbid (specilized sirrus 2009)bike through the cycle to work scheme but the guy in the shop convinced me that these tyres are more or less puncture proof.
i used to get a lot of punctures before on other bikes ..so thats why i am interested in these

No tyre is puncture proof, just puncture resistant. And material aside, a lot of it has to do with tyre pressure.

I hate to keep tempting fate by mentioning this, but I have not had a puncture on my commuter since November and i ride on Vittoria Rubinos. Very good tyre, but the route I cycle most of the time is littered with crap, badly paved and the tyres have now got a good few thousand kms, but still going strong (which is annoying, I have a set of gatorskins waiting 2 months to take over!).

If you don't take preemptive action to try and look ahead and avoid cycling over crap because you think your tyres are puncture "proof", then you will continue to get flats.

tell me more about preferred pressure...

it says it on the side of the tire.

Specialized Armadillo tyres are near puncture proof but with poor ride quality. If you are looking for a commuting tyre that will not puncture and don't mind the ride quality/slipperyness in the wet that is what I would go for. I got 20,000km without a puncture- until the rubber wore through completely (still didn't puncture but time to replace when the tyre looked like this.)

Never used them, but from reading the sales ****e from the cataloge them seem pretty good.
Only tyre with a picture of it rolling through glass and other crap, even has glass in the tyre.

    Looked impressive.

Still think that keeping the correct pressure is the key TBH

Scwelbe Marathons seem to be at least as puncture proof but better in the wet?

Continental Gatorskins give you a very high level of puncture protection but are not so slick that they very are slippery in the wet (in my expierence anyway).

I have the 27" x 11/4 sized tyres (outdated, I know!). The recommended pressure is 95psi and the max is 102psi, so I keep front and rear at 95psi.

You should check your tyre's pressure every two weeks, at least, to make sure that it hasn't reduced. The pressure can reduce over time - this is normal (as long as it doesn't go flat!).

Neither Marathons nor Gatorskins approach Armadillos for puncture resistance but both are far better in terms of ride quality. I only have experience of the basic Marathon mind, the Marathon Plus may be better. As a tyre with a lot of tread though I would have got the impression it is maybe a bit slower than a Gatorskin or Armadillo, perfect for a mix of on and light off road though (that is what I used it for.)

I know this thread is ancient but I found this thread when looking to buy a set of these. Prior to buying these I was getting at least one puncture a week. I think the weight of the rider can have an impact on how many punctures you get.

Anyway, I got myself a set of these and went a solid nine months and several thousand km's without a puncture - until one day, the back one exploded.

Still though - was very happy with nine months - doubtless that they paid for themselves five times over - to mention the hassel they saved me.

They are rather thick and not as comfy to cycle on as previous tyres - but you don't notice after a few days.

I must have terrible luck. I got a set of Schwalbe Big Apples last December and they worked great, I got probably 1 puncture up to April then I swear I got one every 2 weeks until the end of Summer. I had the pressure up as I always do, I'm actually paranoid about my tyre pressure so keep the pressure up regularly.

I'm running the 26x2.00 which weigh around 650g each. I'm actually tempted now just to get a set of Michelin Wild Run'R Advanced, 26x1.10 are 200g each, reviews say they actually hold up fairly well against punctures but after almost a year in the Big Apples I'm happy to trade puncture resistance for weight.
