They actually make a very low margin on cigs, but most smokers buy other things (like chewing gum) when they buy their fags, and that is why they sell them.
Ya cause the margins on a pack of chewing gum are huge.

I'd say this is true, you are much less likely to get alzheimers when you are dead.

I'd hope the government puts as much energy in trying to get people to quit as they do trying to get people not to start. No such thing as a National Non-Starters helpline. WAIT, there's tax!

Anyone have figures for how much revenue to government actually does make from the sale of tobacco products?

    Yesssss!

    That is precisely my argument.
Smokers first, then fatties, than anyone driving a car (already there), people eating junk food, people who drink, anyone not doing a minimum of excercise, etc...
This is fascism, nothing else and if this ever comes to pass I'll be the first to (for reasons of legality I cannot complete this sentence).

Yip, about 3 to 4 times that on cigs.

The retailers make almost as much out of one pack of chewing gum as they make from a pack of cigs.

How much do you think the retailers make from a pack of cigs?

Ok, maybe totalitarianism may be more accurate.
Forcing an idea onto people by any means whatsoever, while silencing dissenters.

I guess they pay a lot of extra VAT on all the food they stuff in their gobs, diet books, slimming pills etc? I'm with you though. How to enforce the tax is the hard bit, yearly weigh ins? cc tax scheme like cars? You could then get a yellow tax disc to wear on your arm showing you are taxed for a certain cc when stopped by the inspectors on the street. Ryanair will be charging them by weight soon enough, that'll be a start.

Yeah just give them gold stars of David and tattoo numbers on their arms, hell just fore go all of that and send them right to the gas chambers there Adolf

I had abit of a coffee addiction going on last winter (it's a great substitute for sleep) but eventually I started waking up in the middle of the night and getting bad headaches.

Correct, However once you burn the chemicals they become hazardous.(their properties change) They are added to make Nicotine more addictive or to allow it enter blood quicker.

Indeed, but I'm pretty sure that a lot of your more well-known brands have some additives in them... Although I have been wrong in this thread already... Nothing like consistency.

this is after hours, not politics, do your own research. it'll take seconds on google I'm sure.

Oh come on. You're the one throwing around baseless claims, I'm now calling your bluff and asking you to back them up.

I did a quick google and found various sources which claimed that the treatment of "smoking related illnesses" cost between €1-2bn per year. I can't find figures indicating how much the Revenue is taking in. I've done my bit, I'm now challenging you to back up your claim. Otherwise its fair to assume that you plucked it out of the air.
