Setanta still have those and indeed still actually have the Irish rights to those 46 too. If Setanta by miracle survived we probably would have ESPN blocked out here because they would both be showing the games. Setanta will fold though there's no way they can continue in the UK and will definately lose at least the 46 games because it would be extremelly difficult to run those games. If Setanta Ireland spins off, they can keep the 3pm ones.

Hopefully RTE would buy the 46 Irish games off them.

ESPN will be broadcast via Sky Digital.

The games will be shown in HD also and across multiple platforms.

I wonder will you need a sky hd sub or just a sky hd box.

I'd imagine you'll need a sky hd sub.

Says EPSN also have the 23 Monday night games that Setanta also won for 2010-2013.

Makes it sound like Setanta is dead and EPSN is in picking off the carcass.

Checked the setanta irish website and they said they have 79 games from the fa premier league.
On the english version theres no mention of the 46 premier league games.
If espn get the irish rights I reckon they will overcharge the irish customers.

    Merging with existing thread...

Seems to be unclear as to whether Setanta still have the Irish rights to the Premier League. It would seem a bit silly to split the 46 games UK/Ireland wise - traditionally the 3pm package has been the only one sold seperately for ROI - but that is indeed what just may happen and don't count Sky out of buying some of the rights either.

I doubt RTÉ will take all three packages though they may take one (probably Saturday 3pm). They have to serve all comers and if they had all three packages there would probably be complaints from non-sports fans on very busy weekend (take Six Nations weekends in Feb/March, I can see the outcry if RTÉ is forced to pick rugby over soccer or vice versa, depending on what else is going on they may not always be able to use both RTÉ1 and 2 for sport)

My own call on this is that ESPN will also pick up the Irish rights to the 46 games and that either RTÉ or a slimmed down, post-examinership and probable sale, Setanta Ireland will take the 3pm games.

I watched the 6.01 news this evening who reported the ESPN story but said Setanta Ireland stood alone and was profitable. What confused me is RTE finished the sports news announcing that the draw for the Setanta Cup had been postponed indefinitely.

I wonder what state Setanta Ireland actually is in?

I was thinking Setanta Ireland might go FTA.

That won't happen, unless on DTT if the consortium Setanta is involved with sign off on the paytv DTT dealy. Even then I'd say it's doubtful

The 3pm games for Ireland would prevent them going fta. There are a lot of mixed signals coming out of the various Setanta regions, the US and Canada are also supposedly unaffected by the problems in the UK.
Best case scenario, Setanta survive holding on to the minor rights (UFC, Magners League, Euro Football etc...)
drop a channel and offer themselves as a 5 pound - 7 to 10 euro add on for fans of those sports/leagues.
Losing the biggest contracts also takes a huge chunk out of their expenditure, granted they'll lose a huge chunk of their subscribers but if they can refinance or find some external investment there may still be a viable business taking the various different markets on an individual basis.

Best result for football fans would be for setanta to lost the 3pm matches and rte/tv3 take them.

TV3 showing any football is terrible for football fans.

Spoke to Setanta call centre today. They advised me that Setanta Ireland and Setanta Sports 1, plus the club channels will be their package going forward. ESPN America will go, the Golf channel,Setanta sports 2 and Setanta sports news are gone. Their pricing and details etc will be advised to existing customers shortly and will reflect the reduced number of channels. They will be showing the 79 Premier League games as per last season and the US Golf will continue on Setanta Ireland. The SPL is definately gone.

79 premiership games? Are these the 3pm games on Saturdays? Didn't think there were that many.

As you will be aware there aren't 79 Saturdays in a year never mind a season. The 79 are made up of 46 Saturday 5.30pm and Monday 8pm games plus 33 Saturday 3pm games.

Does anyone know so if Setanta Ireland have also lost their rights to show Premiership games?

It's all up in the air at the moment. I think we will have to wait untill the ownership of the channel is sorted out first which should be fairly soon.

What are the odds on them showing two 3pm Saturday games every week?

    According to BBC:

The English Premier League has sold the live rights formerly held by Setanta for coverage of its games in the Irish Republic to ESPN.

"The auction for Premier League broadcast rights in The Republic of Ireland for live Saturday 3pm fixtures in season 2009/10 will take place in the coming weeks. The auction process for seasons 2010/11 to 2012/13 will take place later this year."

Poor Setanta don't know this!! Just got this email from customer service

"Please accept my apologies for any inconvenience this matter has caused for you.

We are currently working with various sporting organisations to bring the best of the sporting action to the package. In the mean time we will continue to show top live action including Magners League Rugby, GAA coverage, Formula 1, Champions League, Europa League and much, much more.
We apolgise for the delay in contacting our customer's in relation to the content that will be available going forward however, we are still in negotiations with the FA, UFC and various other sporting organistions to secure broadcasting rights for the forthcoming season. I can confirm that we will be contacting all of customer's once we have all of our sporting content rights secured.
Upon review of our confirmed content, you can simply decide whether or not you would like to remain a Setanta Sports customer. If you decide that the package is not for you, a simple phone call will enable us to arrange cancellation of your account"

Where do they mention anything about the Premier League? The FA do not sell those rights.

Setantas website and FAQ specifically state that they shall show barclays english premiership matches - which we now know to be false....the only hope they have is getting rights to the 3pm matches - say RTE are smiling!
