The two greatest teams in the world finally meet. Barca (reserves) to play Bohs at Dalymount in August (also some minnow outfit near the Border). http://fcbtransfers.blogspot.com/2009/06/barcelona-atletic-will-play-friendlies_11.html

Barca now favourites to land Villa, with Madrid offering just €25m + Negredo while Barca are rumoured to be on the verge of offering €40m + Martin Caceres + Bojan (on loan).

Crazy money, but certainly worth it if it comes to pass. Loaning out Bojan to a team playing inthe UEFA is a very good plan as well.

Apparantly David Villa has said privately he only wants to go to Madrid, and is otherwise prepared to stay put. And Barca's interest is possibly designed to get Madrid to pay more.

Its amazing the drawing power of Madrid - practically everyone would go if they came in for them. That said, the only players that wouldnt go are probably the Catalans.

I was saying the other night what if they came in for Messi for 125m? Does every player have a price? I mean would he go or would Barca sell for a ridiculous amount? TBH I think Messi would rather stay in Barcelona. They contracted him when he was 12 or something and always stood by him. Messi has said he owes Barca everything.

That said Perez is a sicko and he would love nothing better than to sign the top 3 players in the world in 1 fell swoop - is it actually possible? No-one thought Figo would be sold - the famous pigs head incident is one I will never forget.

    They couldnt sell Messi though.....................................

I just wouldn't see the logic of Barca signing him myself... it means Eto'o would almost certainly go - and while he'd fetch a decent price, I'm not sure it'd cover the cost of signing Villa. Plus I'm not sure how much it'd improve the team (Villa's great and all that but it'd take him time to settle).

Only possibilities would be to push Eto'o out wide left and rotate between him and Henry there (I don't think that's Eto'o's best position and he doesn't have Henry's trickery) or that they'd be happy as long as Madrid don't get him (and knowing that Eto'o wouldn't go there either), which doesn't strike me as a very Barca approach.

Messi will not go there in the forseable future, totally different to Figo

What about the Valdes to Utd rumours? I have always thought he was only in the team cos he was Catalan myself

Valdes is a criminally under rated keeper. He is in the team because he is an excellent keeper. Sure, he has the odd rush of blood to the head, but what keeper doesn't. Looking at the season just gone, I can think of maybe 3 goals which were his fault - the Copa Del Rey Final and both against Espanyol, at the Camp Nou.

Anyone else get the fcb newsletter? Very interesting poll about what area should be worked on for next season, and unsurprisingly that (at time of post) 48% picked defence. Also what got me was that 18% picked the forward line, as opposed to 7% for midfield.

Poll is here for those interested: http://www.newsfortruefcbfans.com/newsletter/newsletter_16jun09.php

I don't really know if we need anymore defenders really, just a good replacement for Sylvinho (and that could potentially be Cacares if we hold onto him)..

CB - Puyol, Pique, Milito, Henrique, Marquez, Abidal
LB - Abidal, Cacares, Puyol, Sanchez
RB - Alves, Puyol, Sanchez, Botia

Maybe one wingback signing but otherwise the defense is in pretty healty condition. One of Zhirkov/ Clichy/ Evra/ Lahm would all be excellent additions...

With Eto'o more than likely leaving, we need to sign a replacement, whether that's a straight swap with someone like Villa/ Ibrahimovic/ Forlan or put the money towards a winger like Ribery, and then put Henry upfront for a season. There's alot of possible permutations, but I don't see us needing to spend more than 60 million to make our squad even stronger.

Yaya Toure signs a new deal with Barca to keep him to 2012.

Very happy with that. Incredibly under rated player and hugely important member of the squad as evidenced in the latter stages of the CL.

    Great news

    Yaya resigned as expected.

Rumours circulating that barca are goign to pay 13 million for Brazilian striker kerison, and are to imediately include him in a swap and 40 million euro's deal for Valencia ace Villa.

    huh? is that even legal?

Technically yes. If the deal were to happen it would be pretty much the same as what happened when Dietmar Hamann left Liverpool on a free. He signed a contract with Bolton but then a few days or hours even changed his mind and went on to sign with Man City.

The FIFA rules state that players cannot play for more than two clubs in one season - august to june - and if Kerrison didn't play for Barça then it would be perfectly legal.

Would actually represent a good deal for Valencia as they would not only get a large amount of money to help pay off the supposed €300 million + debt but they would also be getting a very talented player who is suited to the La Liga style.

I doubt it'd be that much better a deal for Valencia. Kerrisson would probably need to adjust, and prob wouldnt make an instant impact, bar a very unusual sucess. As such, it'd just result in Valencia looking after him for the adjusting period, which would work out much better for Barca overall.

I don't get it. Why not just pay 53 million for Villa and let Valenica sign Kerrison or whoever they want with the money?

Probably cos they reckon he's gonna be a superstar in a couple of years, so he'll be cheaper now.

Plus he'll gain his Spanish passport over the next 2 years there, which I guess will help with regards to UEFA rules around quotas for Barca, etc... (although that'll hardly be a problem for the club anyway id imagine).

So is it a loan deal or what?

Oh right, yeh, cash + loan Kerrison for 2 years or similar i guess.

I would imagine the only way Eto'o will move is if Villa is signed.

ah, i thought it was he can't registered for more than two clubs.

Yeah that is the rule. You can't sign someone and then sell them the next day - because that would be three clubs in the same period of time.

I think its the other way around tbh, that Villa will only be bought if Eto'o accepts the move to City. As the quotes say, Eto'o wants to stay, but the wages being offered by City are so massive that he may accept it, and if he does, a replacement will be bought.

Im not sure about this, Hamann left liverpool, joined Bolton and left for City less then 24 hours later.

Likewise, Negredo is being massively touted for a move back to Real, as they have a great buy back clause, and then being sold on again immediately for a few million profit at his actual value.

The rule is that you can't play for 3 clubs in a year I think, not sign for.

I hope E'too stays. His goal ratio over the past 5 years is 1 in every 1.48 games. That has to be in the top 3 in Europe. The only striker I can think of that could match this would be Van Nistlerooy.

It sounds like Laporte wants rid of E'too. All this talk of City making an offer that he cannot refuse sounds a bit like he wants E'too gone. E'too might be a pain in the dressing-room or something but for football reasons he is one of the most clinical strikers in the World.

Eto'o is probably the last bad egg in the dressing room.
But I don't think anyone will replace him, at least not instantly.

If he does go there are 2 on the market - Benzema and Villa. Either of these would be a great signing with preference for Villa. Plus Keirrison should be signed this week.

Kerrison will do pre season with Barca, then Guardiola decides whether or not to hold onto him.

Benzem as an adequate replacement for Eto'o? Don't make me laugh. Decent player, but not (yet?) in the same class as Eto'o. The only adequate replacement would be David Villa.
