I think its important to keep players on their toes and competing for starts. I think in Pre-season players like Hleb and Guddy should be given a bigger role for their morale. And for the first half of the season the squad will need to be rotated VERY regularly seen as they will have a chaotic fixture listings.

To cope with this I think we need to sigh
A new left back, a new mid-fielder and a new striker. Keeping every thing we have (maybe not Hleb :o) and truly building a strong squad.

    Left back : Lahm? Cole?
Mid field : Xabi Alonso? Silva? ( Silva would be ideal )
Striker : Ibra would be nice, or Forlan.

We need strengthening on the left hand side plus another striker.

I like Cole, Ribery and Aguero.

Seriously man, Hleb has had plenty chances and he has been appalling all season. Bambi on ice springs to mind. Barca is too big a club for him. Hell, Arsenal was too big a club for him. Probably ideally suited to the French or German league for top teams and mid table English or Spanish sides.

Gudjonnsen, while I believe is an excellent squad player will most likely move on as he needs first team football at this stage of his career.

Cole would be far too expensive no? Ribery, I think the jury could be out. I would not like Barca to pay a huge fee, for a player who could end up being another Hleb.

Aguero or Villa all the way. Villa would be easier to get as I cannot see Atleti allowing Aguero go on the cheap. Is Silva left footed?

Cole would be expensive but he is a world-class left-back, maybe we could look at someone cheaper though to save funds for elsewhere. Ribery is one of the best players in the world and cannot be compared to Hleb. He has been world-class for years now and would get in any team in the world. Why not get him? He would definitely compliment the team.

Agreed there isnt much between Aguero and Villa and either would be fantastic.

Why is everyone in such a hurry to replace Abidal?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 21,296 ✭✭✭✭gimmick

^ thats what I was thinking too. He had an absolutely superb season. Hardly put a foot wrong. But I think people are talking about getting cover. Sylvinho is now gone and I doubt Puyol really wants to be 2nd choice LB. he is getting on as well afterall.

Capdevila plays left back as well doesnt he? If the fire sale goes ahead as thought at valencia he would be a great addition to the squad IMO.

Its been said earlier in this thread I think, that the above would have been true had you said it 12 months ago. Not after the season he has just had.

    Hmmm
Barcelona Offer €5m To Deportivo La Coruna For Filipe Luis
Filipe Luis is the player Barca want to replace Sylvinho, and they have come up with a tempting offer...

Barcelona have offered €5 million plus the choice of two players on loan to Deportivo de La Coruna for Filipe Luis after the Galician club stated he was worth €15 million.

The Blaugrana made their interest official this week and followed that up by putting forward a cash bid plus the option of taking two out of three of their youngsters for a season.

With Sylvinho being released, Barca are keen to sign a new left-back to provide competition for Eric Abidal, and Filipe is now at the top of their list.

Depor stated that they feel the 23-year-old defender is worth €15m, but Barca put forward €5m and stated that Pedro, Jeffren or Abraham could go on loan for a year without the option to purchase.

That offer is being considered for Filipe, who began his career in Spanish football with the Real Madrid B side before moving to Depor where he penned a contract until 2013.

If Barcelona are unable to do business then they will step up a move for their other left-back option, who is John Arne Riise, and will ask Roma to name their price.

The Norwegian learnt of the Catalan club's interest and stated that while he is proud to be associated with them, he is not going to consider it unless something official happens.

Riise? I assume that one was just plucked out of thein air? How old is he, 33?

The jury is most certainly not out - he's matured into a fabulous player - if you choose not to sign him, it will be your loss

He's very similar to Abidal imo and would cost a fair bit because he plays for Villarreal!;)

28 not bad for back up to be fair. Had a fairly awful season at Roma though.

I don't get that, he really isn't imo, and I don't see why everyone thinks he is? He'd a bad first season yes, but his form for the games he played this season was fine.

I think there's also a lot of pent up animosity against Abidal after he was selected first choice LB for France last summer ahead of Clichy and Evra who had both had awesome seasons. Abidal has really come back this season though and shown what he's made of.

I admit he has had a pretty good season, but just in comparison to his first season and still think he is more of an athelete than a footballer :(

Treble winners Barcelona are planning to sign three or four top players to strengthen the squad for next season, president Joan Laporta said on Sunday.

"We anticipate signing three or four high-level names to occupy the positions that the technical staff think need reinforcing," Laporta said in comments published on Barca's website.

Laporta also said there had been a number of offers for striker Samuel Eto'o and club officials would be meeting the Cameroon international's agent this week to discuss whether he will stay or be sold. Barcelona have been linked in the media with a bid for Inter Milan striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic and reports said Eto'o may move to the Italian club as part of the deal.
    Surely this is bull ?
    Ibrahimovic for Eto ??
I know who I'd prefer to have in that Barca team and it aint Zlatan.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,668 ✭✭✭✭JPA

I know some people don't rate Eto'o that highly but taking him and his goals outta the team is a big risk.
A superstar like Villa or Zlatan could be signed to replace but you can't guarantee they will get the goals he did and goals are ultimately the most important thing.
In saying that I can't see Bara signing Zlatan. I don't think he would fit in.

Ibrahimovic is awful. I think Gudjohnsen would be a better alternative to Eto'o to be perfectly honest.

He's not awful but he wouldn't fit in at Barcelona IMO.
It would certainly be an interesting development though.

I've always thought he was a player whos ability fell far far far below his rating

I don't understand why they want to ship Eto'o off again. After the season he has had he has shown he can be in the right position time and time again.

    BUT
Forlan is the best striker in the world this season, when one has watched Barca as avidly as I have this season, its quite apparent that Eto'o can be highly wasteful. In a game he can be handed 7 or 8 golden opportunities via a pass or mistake and will score 2. A vital 2 indeed BUT

    FORLAN
Makes his own chances, can be a lethal poaches, full of confidence after an outstanding season by WORLD standards. He is never given the quality of a pass like Eto'o is yet always scores. He is just out of this world when it comes to getting goals.

At barca I honestly believe he could become one of the best strikers in the space of 2-3 seasons. If he was given half the opportunities Eto'o was this season he would have equaled Eto'o for goals.

Sorry my English is very incoherrent. I've been awake more than 30 hours.

    Forlan is class.
He is the model striker,2 lethal feet, fast and hard working.

I dont see why we are so keen to ship off E'too either - he fits into this Barcelona team perfectly. Alright he can be wasteful but so are most strikers - as they say he does get into the right positions and can also be lethal. His goal-scoring record speaks for itself - keep him and add another striker to the panel. Also E'too is rarely injured which is a bonus.

I would like to see either Villa or Aguero join us. Aguero would form a savage link with Messi and would blend into the team whereas Villa is a world-class striker who would fit in anywhere. Regards Forlan, I dont like it. He is playing brilliantly at the moment but I will never forget the flop he was at Utd. Maybe he is settled now not playing for one of the biggest clubs on the planet. He would be too much of a risk and maybe wouldnt be able to handle the pressure playing for the Blaugrana.

While I admire Zlatan I dont think he would fit into the team and may cause problems in the dressing-room. If Guardiola could give him leadership though he could turn out to be the best striker in the world but is he worth the risk? - €40m approx and maybe disharmony in the dressing-room??? Could be a master-stroke or a disaster.

Anyone thinking of heading to the Wembley Cup July 24-26. Barcelona, Celtic, Spurs and some Egyptian side?

Gonna see can I afford it, and see can I coerce anyone to go along as well.

Numerous stories of Zlatan to Barca for Eto'o and €10 million.
    Seems insanity to me.

Apparently, Eto'o wants one more season at Barca. And apparently Benzema will be sold at the end of next season... Coincidence?
    I hope not.

    Hi all,
This is a topic we have gotten into talking about in the dressing room over the last while. Basically we have been talking about what makes the barca team that much better than other teams in europe. I don't know if anyone would be interested in this thread but i'd like to see other peoples views on this.

players like Messi, Xavi and Iniesta would be a good place to start!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,220 ✭✭✭Davaeo09

What makes Barca truely tick, is the philosophy its self, and the two players that are the empodiment of this pass and move philosophy. Iniesta and Xavi. I seen a video a while back about how the two are great pal's off the pitch as well as on it. And they get involved in the youth academy allot. There two great players, without there service, Messi would be anonomous.

Barca now favourites to land Villa, with Madrid offering just €25m + Negredo while Barca are rumoured to be on the verge of offering €40m + Martin Caceres + Bojan (on loan).

Crazy money, but certainly worth it if it comes to pass. Loaning out Bojan to a team playing inthe UEFA is a very good plan as well.
