Cheers lads, I'll have a closer look on ebay. That crowd charge 26 dollars shipping and I think that might be per item. They even have a "Spicy Pink Faux Alligator Skin with shoulder strap", haha I'd look cute with that :)

Someone should import the damn things into Europe, says on their ebay ad that they are made in Korea not USA.

Having imported crates of IT goodies from Hongkong/Japan- you'd have coronary heart failure at what normal shipping rates from the region come to (and don't even get me started on duties and taxes chargeable as its coming from outside the EU). I know its galling to have to pay $50 or $60 when anyone in the US can get it for half that- but seriously, if someone in the EU was charging EUR40- they would be hardpressed to make anything reasonable on it after all the taxes etc were taken into account....... I used get boxes of things like this from the likes of Success HK etc- I just gave up- its not worth it.

This crowd might be of iterest to some of you, postage is really cheap only £3.40 per order in EU.

They've a nice range of carry cases, I like this one:
    http://www.gearzap.com/cool-bananas-netbook-bag-for-8-9-10-2-black.html

They do a range of reusable skins and screen protectors, I kinda like this:
    http://www.gearzap.com/gelaskins-underworld-10-2-large-netbook-skin-protector.html

I wouldn't use them for anything else though, they seem expensive for batteries and other stuff.

How would these or other netbooks suit me for university. For taking notes in lectures, saving recordings of lectures, surfing, and using webcam with skype to talk to the other half when she's away. Is the keyboard parctical for typing notes for typing or would I be better going for a 13 inch full laptop.

I have a high spec 17 inch laptop but its not practical for lugging around when i go back to college.

Its got the largest keyboard of any of the netbooks, unsurpassed battery life- and none of your proposed uses need serious muscle power- so I'd say go for it!

Yeah, its 93% of a normal keyboard, not gonna notice 7% really. I will deffinitely consider it/its successor this time next year. Would buy one now if I had the cash.

Ok now we got a problem. I've been using my NC10 without a hitch since the day I got in and it didn't take me long to have Windows 7 running on it perfectly. Now, the odd time the sound would stop working (usually after awaking from sleep) so thinking it must be a bug because it's a beta, I restarted the computer and it would work again.

Only yesterday I had the same problem so I restarted - still no sound. I put it on high performance, reinstalled the drivers and ran the troubleshooting (no errors or problems found), reboot the machine, reset the BIOS to defaults and still, no sound working.

Now the headphones work with it fine which is grand in all but I need my speakers regardless of loudness. I tried playing a few songs via Winamp and could very faintly hear the hissing on the song. I'm beginning to think my speakers have blew (or shorted since they aren't that powerful). Off to chat to Elara, hope I'm still covered. By the way, I can no longer hear the sound and I have reinstalled Windows 7 again.

Has anyone else had this problem or heard of anyone with the same issue?

    Cheers!

Should not be a problem really, usual proceure if you don't mind is going through trouble shooting with Samsung. Once that is done thay will organise to have it collected and fixed for you, then they wll have it sent back.

    http://www.samsung.com/ie/info/contactus.html

If you are within 28 days you can just disregard that and fill in a RMA form as we will replce the whole unit with a new one.

Anyway let me know if you need me to assist in anyway.

In the process to sort it out now, thanks Kin!

EDIT: Have a box coming out to me soon to be sent off and replaced. Have to install Windows XP again now - dam haha!

There have been problems with the Windows 7 sound drivers particularly (including the problem with headphones working but speakers not), give it a check with XP before sending it back.

Already in the plans, just doing more of a backup now (had everything on a second partition but now it's going onto my passport so I can format the entire drive). Pain in the arse moving 60GB again but this time over USB, roll on 3.0 please.

Argos have them in Black/white/pink for 379.99. Power City have them for the same price but if you order online and pick it up same day you can save 20 Euro on that. Someone else might know if theres anywhere cheaper in town.

Argos looks like my best bet, found one but not in the City Centre so I have it reserved.

    Thanks for the help.

Anyone have any idea where you can go look at these? Thinking of buying it online at komplett.ie for €349 but would like to get a look at it first before I buy it. I've been to Harvery Norman and Currys and PC World but haven't seen it in there. Anywhere around City Centre or Blanch would be handiest. Thanks

I remember seeing one in the display window of Peats in Blanch shopping centre. 3G does have one as well, same place, besides the fountain. HTH

Just bought one of these last thursday, it should hopefully be here monday!

I've seen a few complaints online about the nc10's wifi capability. A few people recommend changing the wifi card altogether.

Has anyone here encountered any wifi problems?

The only complaint I've read about was the range of the Atheros wifi card, which I have and use daily without any problems. That said, the longest distance it has to cover in the apartment is 6-7 yards through a plaster wall. :pac: Speed is good, signal strength is good.

I've replaced the card for several people- mostly with Intel 5100s
The driver for the Atheros is a dog- versus incredibly good software for the Intel card.......

no complaints from me- changed browser to Goggle chrome this evening and noticed a sharp increase in speed times- not a techie so can't explain it any other way, only than what I did appeared to make a difference- have used the NC 10 for the last 6 months using different wi-fi outlets and it connected fine for each and every occasion - near full size key board on NC 10 is excellent - battery life great- best of luck with it

Is the range any better with this Intel?

My router is in the front of the house and out in the back garden I get 1 bar but the signal breaks up a fair bit and I get disconnected. It's a pretty long house though with a couple of solid walls in the way and I'm using the normal Eircom netopia silver with 2 antennas.

Do you think I should somehow boost the signal from the router or replace the card? I don't want to move the router cause it's hard wired into my main PC in the office.

The card is only one element of equation regarding range.

Possible things to have a think about:

    1. the antenna cable in the NC10 could be replaced- what you'd do is feed a long cable into the chasis around the screen. To be honest- while its very effective- I wouldn't recommend it.

    2. the Intel 5100 or 5300 can be set to transmit and receive using up to 5 times more power than the Atheros card- purely in the software settings for the intel card. Its a doddle to manipulate- and very effective. It will of course, shorten the battery life if you're using wifi.

    3. Look at the other end of the equation- your wifi router. You can pick up replacement antenna up to 20 dbi on ebay with a packet of universal antenna fixtures for most common sockets. In theory- you could increase the range of your wifi network up to 10 fold doing this.

If you decide to do this- make sure you change your default router settings to use less common channels (in an Irish context perhaps channel 3 or 4)- or else you'll have the neighbours wanting to murder you.

    4. Look at the wifi router again- the Netgears and some others have upgradeable firmwares that can be modified to specify much higher broadcast powers than would be normal. Its naughty- but a highly effective way of increasing your signal strength and network coverage.

    5. There are routers out there which can double up multiple broadcast channels using a technology colloquailly known as MIMO. If its a feature of your router- activate it.......

What I'm saying is a cheap wireless card is not necessarily the reason for poor wireless reception- your router and how you have it configured is a far more important factor. Its far better to invest a reasonable amount in a decent router- than it is to start modding your laptop. Any router that advertises itself as a 'gaming router' would as a generalisation- be optimised to the best of its capabilities. Sure- it'll cost you double what you can get a bog standard router for- but you do get what you pay for.........

    S.
