    Hi

First off Ive already seen my doctor about this so Im not asking for medical advise, just
general/alternative advise. I used to wet the bed when I was a kid up untill I was about 9, but I grew out of it like most people do. For a couple of months when I was 19 I went through a spell were I would wet the bed sometimes when I went out, however, back then I used to take Extasy (I dont anymore and havent for years btw) so I just
put it down to the combination of the two at the time. Looking back though I do recall 1 incident at a family wedding were I wet the bed in the hotel we were staying in, and I hadnt taken an E that night so I doubt they had anything to do with it after all. It seemed to stop after a couple of months and up untill recently its only happend once in 10 years, that was Alcohol related and the most drunk ive ever been in my life, but in the last 2 months I seem to wet the bed about 1 out of every 3 nights I go out.

I have to work 1 weekend a month and I see my girlfriend every other weekend, we live in different parts of the country so our usual routine is she stays in my place 1 weekend and I pop up to hers the next, everything has been perfect for nearly 2 years. I dont know if it was luck but even though its happend a couple of times in my appartment, up untill last weekend its never happened when weve slept together, only when ive been on my own. But last weekend it did happen, to make matters worse it happened in her place and she still lives with her parents, my only saving grace was I didnt get any on her. She's totally cool about it, partly due to the line of work she's in but mostly beause she's very loving, but obviously Im sure she doesnt want to get pee'd on if we can avoid it. I was out drinking on friday while she was over and it didnt happen, she had to go home yesterday for a family thing so I went out with my mates last night and ... well .... it happened again.

Has anyone had any similar experience ?, it only happens when Im drinking and it doesnt even happen all the time but its happening enough that its becoming a problem. At first I put it down to drinking too much beer, and to be fair most of the nights it has happened ive been pretty wasted, but there was one weekend were I drank so much I couldnt remember stuff from the night before but woke up dry as a bone, then the next night all I had was was 6 cans (nothing in comparison to the previous night), remembered everything (even setting my alarm for work) and still woke up in a puddle of pee.

Would really appreciate if anyone has any tips, Im 29 and this has only started happening in the last 2 months, I just hope its a phase like the one I had when I was 19 and will go away after a while. Im a really bad sleeper and sometimes I used to avoid drinking because id wake up 4 or 5 hours later needing to pee and then not be tired enough to get back to sleep, now I wish my body would just do its bloody job! :(

What did your doctor advise ?

Go and see a Doctor , thats obviously important , but also , exactly how important is drinking to you ? Seriously , if I was in your situation , I wouldnt drink . Certainly not until I'd seen a doctor at least.

cut back the drinking..my brother was the very same...pissing in his bed ...on a wall...in a corner of the bedroomm unless the old lady started burning his matress everytime he pissed it...soon he had no money left for beer :)
he wasn't long copping on then.
Some people just handle alcohol differenently...

He prescribed me some tablets called Desmotabs, told me they should work but not to take them if I drank "too much". What his definition of too much is I dont know, considering he himself is a recovering Alcoholic :P.

I haven't taken any of the tablets because of that but Im starting to wish I did now, I did a bit of research and they seem to be more geared towards the 1% of adults who still wet the bed even when there sober (I don't fall into this category, I woke up last night needing to pee after drinking too much Milk before I went to bed), some people have said they work great were as others say they don't work if its alcohol related.

Keep in mind lads, I haven't changed my drinking habits in any way, ive had plenty of nights up until 3 months ago were I have drank A LOT more and never once had this happen (I could tell you some very funny stories as examples and nothig like that has happened over the last 2 months). Also, as mentioned earlier, I had a similar problem when I was 19 for about 3 months and it just went away though I never told anybody about it. I have had some mental health issue's in the past that were anxiety related, counseling and the right therapy got me over that but Im hoping if its a mental issue that A) itll go away and B) if not some more counseling may help.

Being so drunk you can't recall much of the night before might include not being able to recall going to the toilet. That's happened to me - maybe it's to do with your drinking pattern, what you're drinking, etc.?

We can all add our slant based on personal experience, genuine ignorance but willingness to help, twilight-zone notions or just sheer mischief, but at the end of the day you're the only one who knows what you're putting into your bladder and when, and consequently what's liable to come out and when. Sounds like you've struck gold - pardon the allusion - with your girlfriend, so perhaps for her sake and certainly for your own maybe you should try going out and partying but holding back on drinking anything over and above what's necessary to keep your body hydrated, then seeing what happens? That would at least rule different social situations out of the equation (given that you can stay in and drink only a glass of water anyway).

Just my tuppence-worth - good luck!

PS Trout, there is no serpent with a mouth big enough to accommodate sufficient teeth to compare to the scorn of three ungrateful children. Peeing in the bed comes to mind again...

no disrespect man, but if I wet the bed after drinking, I wouldn't be drinking.

Did you ever try dandelion tea? Dandelion is a diuretic (makes you pee), much like alcohol, so if you drink some dandelion tea and have the same results, it could be that you just can't handle diuretics.

    ...

Yea my girlfriends the best. Everything was going ok these last few weeks but unfortunatley disaster struck on thursday morning. I had a 3 day weekend and after a hard days work on a late shift decided to havfe a six pack, woke up the next day and ... well ... you know the rest :/

I was dreading heading up to the girlfriends place this weekend but she assuered me everything would be ok. Dunno if it was just luck but I made it through both nights dry (and I drank far more then a 6 pack both nights). Friday night, before we went home we said we'd walk her friend home, she ended up talking the arse off us about her personal life and by the time we got back to hers I was half sobered up.; I went to the toilet the minute I went in, but I also got a can from the fridage straight after, girlfriend was feelin tired so we only had the one and she reminded me to go to the loo before I went to bed, didnt really need to go but forced myself to go. Woke up the next day perfect, thank god.

Next night I drank a ****load, stayed up till all hours drinking with her and her parents. Went to the loo before I went to bed but considering the amount I drank (about 9 pints and a shot of Jagermeister) I said Id chance taking half of one of those tablets the doctor prescribed me. Went to bed around 4 in the morning (the sun was just starting to come up) then woke up at about 8am bustin for a wizz and felt much more dehydrated then normal, drank a pint of water but it didnt seem to quench my thirst, I might as well have drank a pint of sand and my stomach felt strange (not sick or painful just weird). 11:30, woke up needing to pee again but this time I felt perfect perfect :)

I dont know if it was luck or if that half a tablet actually did anything, but I think Ill keep them for when I have to go away somewhere, its depressing enough happening in your own home even if yop live alone, its a nightmare if it happens in somebody else's house.

"if I wet the bed after drinking, I wouldn't be drinking"

If it happened every single time I drank that would be one thing, but it doesnt, its only happening about a qurter of the time and only the last 3 months at that. Also, my girlfriend lives in the sticks and there really is nothing better to do there then drink in the local. Whatever about when she's up in my place, I couldnt imagine going up to hers and socializing sober, I might as well not go up at all because all of them arehuge drinkers.

Firstly, are you an anxious person? Do you worry about things in your everyday life? Are you concerned about your job, people, finance?

Secondly, do you have a mattress protector? These are rubber sheets to put on the mattress to prevent urine spilling and staining the mattress. Do you wear adult nappies to absorb soakage?

Thirdly, the common thread from your mails here suggests to me that you drink excessively. If you are prone to wetting the bed having had a skinful then cut it down to two or three or cut it out altogether. You have a nice girlfriend and if you expect her to remain in a relationship with you then you must respect her. And that means not getting sloshed everytime you go drinking. You say you drink cans of beer. Where do you drink them? How strong are the beers you drink? Do you socialise in pubs and buy drink there or just drink in your place, your girlfriend's place or in friends' houses?

Fourthly and finally, it is up to you to sort out this bedwetting problem. Ask your GP to refer you to a Urologist. But the big step you need to take is to cut down cosiderably your alcohol intake or cut it out completely.

it's actually really really common and one of the greatest taboos

i guarantee that if you and your girlfriend were out with a load of likeminded people that were mates, and someone started a story, they'd all tell theirs. was at a house recently where this happened. still thought it was strange though!

the rubber mattres mentioned works. but it might **** up your duvet. it's still better than the matress being ****ed though. they stop your skin from breathing and so make you sweat. Because of this you should only put it on when you’re going to have drinks. It will mean your bed isn’t destroyed for when your girlfriend comes to stay

generally, when you get home watch the telly for a half hour with no beer.
If you’re going out with your girlfried, stay away from the beer and only drink wine. It’s not about how hammered you get, it’s about the quantity in your system

Be careful though, it’s a sort hop from being a fun loving beer man to a wino

    These steps will help

    <Moderator Edit - snip - medical advice>

    Good luck!

Yes, yes, yes, no and yes. Im stuck in a dead end job that I hate but have to tough out to pay the rent, but also in this economic climate, it could be gone tommorow. So now more then ever I feel like ive got a gun to my head making me do a job I hate, its the lesser of 2 evils but only barely.

No, I did as a kid and to be honest, the thought of using either of those again is so demeaning id rather ly in my own pee (there that bad). As a kid you can hear every fold in those plastic matresses with every twist and turn in the bed, I wore big kid nappies on and off from when I started school till I was about 9, using either of those again at 29 (the mattress especially) is just not happening.

Yes my girlfriends awesome, and even she suggested cutting down a little but actually laughed about giving it up completley, to quote her

"Give up drinking ?, are ya ****ing mad ?"

:D , having drinking beaten into your culture by being Irish alone is hard enough, but in her neck of the woods its like a religon :P.

She even said "Im not that shallow"

I drink regular 4.3% beer (normally carlsberg, bavaria if Im broke). I drink with my friends or the misses 99% of the time, I drank on my own for the first time in about a year last week. I normally have a few beers (6 or 7) on a friday in my mates place or with the misses, then go out to a club on a saturday, usually drinking a few more (8 or 9). I normally only drink about twice a week and never go for the "sunday morning cure" cause I hate drinking during the day unless its something like xmas or a bank holiday weekend, my girlfriend drinks way more often then me when she's not working (probably 4 or 5 times a week) but rarely gets into a state as often as me.

Thanks for the advice, Ive had a lot of personal issues the last while but besides the stress of the job, there all gone now. Im on a 3 week winning streak so far so hopefully this really is a phase and has passed now (fingers crossed) :)

I hope you get this message. I read your post and I have had problems with the bladder since I was a little kid-- wetting bed until I was 13.

Here's the thing. The BIG thing. Drink a glass of water for every beer you consume.

I found that I do the same thing when I drink a little bit too much--Less hydration, more chance of peeing in the sack. I have a boyfriend long term, this can be embarrassing.

But the biggest solution is, ironically, drink as much water as you can.

Just try it. You'll see it works.

Thanks for the advice, Ive had 3 accidents since I last posted, I was convinced that 1/2 a Desmotab worked every time before but now its happened twice even after taking them :(. Im not sure if all those half's of tablets I was taking did any good or if it was just some kind of Placebo effect (Ill try taking a full one next time).

I have noticed anytime I drank beer with a lot of Ice it never happened, maybe the ice watered the beer down ?. I just got off the phone with my mate and he wants to know if Im going to his stag in dublin, normally it wouldn't be a problem, but the way things have been going lately ..... :(
