every time I walked past the bag shop, it was empty and the girl behind the counter was just sitting there with nothing to do, looking out the window.

Bit of a difference comparing Mc Donaghs with Tesco. People need food and Tesco has a large number of weekly customers. Your not comparing like with like here.
Tesco will definitely not go bust if they move out of town, infact they will probably increase their market share in Sligo as people don't want to be spending ages looking for a parking space and most people drive to Tesco anyways as they aren't going to carry all their shopping home.

Unless of course you cant afford a car or cant drive. Then theres those wheely shopping baskets (dont knock them I used to have a very becoming tartan one ;)) and the bottom of the pram if you have baby. Of course you pray for an accessible bus if you are living outside town and relying on public transport, they really help. Ah but thats probably Dublin or London, there still at catch up stage here. :(

From this thread it appears if we have 5 shops ...A,B,C,D and E .... and shop A is the cheapest, then shops B,C,D and E are 'rip offs'.

However, if all 5 are the same price, don't we call that price fixing/cartel?

Some businesses don't set themselves up to be the 'cheapest' you know? ...It's just not possible, they can't all be the cheapest.
Some businesses actually want to make a profit for their owners ... they are not simply a charity or a job club, they are an investment, that requires a return on that investment...otherwise why bother?

There are some people that want a Mercedes but will only pay for a Lada.

Now I agree whit what your saying.

It's just that they try to sell you that Lada for the price of a Merc in Sligo.

I think the shop counted for a long time that you wouldn't make the trip to somewhere cheaper or just for more choice. This changed with internet. Sligo needs to evolve or it will be going like it does/did now.

I also think they have been protected against real competion by the chamber of commerce.

I still think you will find most people do their shopping with a car, (even see people go shopping with taxi!!!).

But normaly there will always be a smaller supermarket in the town center to cater for people from town, you can have both and most town and city's do.

And ofcourse good public transport to retail parks is a must.

Retail parks are planned on the out skirts of towns and city's to make parking possible and so that not all traffic needs to go in town/city since most city's/towns are not made for cars and lorry's in the numbers we have today.

Horray for internet shopping all right, but dublin is not always cheaper...often its the same, sometimes its dearer, and if you have a problem do you bring the item back to Dublin ?

Of course DID and Powercity have shops....

Nobody said anything of the sort, and Tesco themselves being shrewd and experienced business people have not made that mistake....in fact they have plans for a newer, much bigger and better Tesco in Sligo, along with a bigger + better car park. Look at what happened to McDonaghs when they moved out a few years ago ! Location is important.

I dont want to get to much into this but the fact of the matter here is McDonaghs did a lot better when they moved to Cooloney and the reason the doors are closed is not down to Cooloney failing in fact it was doing a reasonable trade so I wouldnt be at all surprised if it is taken over. So the arguement that location is everything is false. If sombody wants to buy a new kitchen they go and travel to find it. Moving was the best thing that they did , more parking storage and display space.
THere are other posts saying staff are waiting on wages etc, thats BS also. If Ballymote closes its doors Pat will leave business with all suppliers paid up to date as well as staff and anyone else who is owed. The real problem here is that the big suppliers dont give credit to anyone no more and banks wont do either.

And how many people can fit a weeks worth of food to feed a family of 3 or 4 into the bottom of a buggy or one of those wheely shopping baskets.
I'm not saying everyone drives to the supermarket but the majority of people do.

Why was the Collooney store always empty so ? Why did they survive in business for decades before their move to Collooney ? Why would anyone do a return journey of an average of 15 miles for a kettle or electric blanket ? A unit in an industrial estate 8 miles away from the centre of the town is going to attract nobody.

I'm a student who needs bags but I still never went in there. You can buy schoolbags in loads of other shops, all the sports shops have them, Tk Maxx and Lyons'.

Many like to to it within easy access of other shops, banks, surgeries, offices, public transport facilities etc, or before / after work etc.

Ballymote wasn't in the centre of town either.

My guess is they weren't trying to go for people outside of the communities they were in, or at least people who couldn't drive.

Fact of the matter is, people who drive generally have more money to spend anyway (and I say this as a current quite poor non driver)

Are you a spokesperson or a member of the Chamber of Commerce Jimmmy??
With respect, you do seem to me to have a bee in your bonnet about 'out of town shopping' :)

This is exactly the thing is somebody really wants to get someting they will travel . A good kettle will cost up to 90 euro so would people not travel for that I know I would.

Say what you want Jimmmy but Cooloney was doing better than Sligo until the country went t%ts up, but has been making money since. Thats why I can see it reopening.

An average kettle may be 25 or 30 euro...and you can get them less. Same with electric blankets etc. If someone wanted one would they drive a return journey of an average 15 miles to get one ? Or if you wanted to price one would you drive out there...or if you had a small problem with something else you bought ? Common sense, as well as the experience of the apparent failure of the Collooney unit, indicates they would not. Not everyone wants to waste time and petrol for such pursuits....even if they had access to a car, which not everyone has.

Right so Jimmmy tell us what percentage of shoppers in Sligo Town on a Saturday are either using public transport or walking ? Do you think that people in Crozon , Cartron or Kevinsfort areas for example all walk into town to shop every week ? The reality is that I wont go to tesco as I have to park in the centre of town with all the others that use tesco and thats a nightmare. I prefer somewhere with parking and if that were 10 miles from town then I dont mind travelling.

There is parking in Sligo....not as much as would be desired, but there are spaces....which are easier to get now because of the recession. There are plans to provide more spaces. Contact the Borough Council if you want more spaces - they have planning permission granted on them as far as I know.

By contributing and posting here and by been pretty much the only person against out of town shopping I don't blame Jabby for thinking you might be a member of the Chamber of Commerce and you are sort of making it our business by been the only person against it and your posting it on a public forum.

Yes there is parking but it's brutal. I drove Wine Street car park looking for a space but couldn't find one so I went elsewhere.

This thread should be closed. It is called "Stores Closing in Sligo". Ye are all going way off topic. Only post here if you find out that Easons or Moffits etc. is closing down.

Why did you not go in to the Dunnes, Tesco or Quayside car park ? Or better still use public transport, its more environmentally friendly. Besides, some people live or work in town so they do not have to drive specially to do their shopping.

Good point. Lets keep it on track and only post about stores closing in Sligo, the thread topic. Also lets hope few ( if any ) more close and over time things improve again.

McDonaghs in Ballymote is still open, they are meant to be closing tomorrow. Not much left in there but 30% off stock that is there.

Anyways......I hope KFC doesn't go. Heard rumours about a few in Dub to go. Blanch was mentioned. KFC does great business here. Always packed when I go in and the drivethru option is always busy.

Last time I checked Wine Street carpark was Tesco carpark. I was meeting someone in tesco that's why I chose to try there. I was too afraid to try Quayside as I was driving a big jeep which I don't like trying to park especially in Quayside which is full of concrete bollards.

I don't use public transport in Sligo as I would have to walk for about two hours or so to the bus stop so it's quicker to drive.

Oh and I wouldn't be surprised if the clothes shop in Tesco arcade closed soon, I haven't heard anything but it looks like a dive that nobody goes into.

I wonder how Third Wave Music is doing now that Zavvi is gone, I'd say the only thing keeping it open is that fact that it is the only Ticketmaster outlet in Sligo.
