Hi all,

    Hi,

    Im wondering if any of you know of a recording studio in Dublin that deals with electronica artists? I need EXCEPTIONAL mastering and mixing skills.

    Tell us a bit more of your requirements Ilex. How many tracks and what is your budget ?

    Exceptional mastering skills are very different from exceptional mixing skills.

    For the best electronic music mastering you should check out George Peckham who works at Porky's Mastering in London. He's mastered a lot of people from The Beatles to Aphex twin.

    The Exchange in London is a good mastering house: http://www.exchangemastering.co.uk/

    Also the famous Dubplates and Mastering in Berlin where the guys form Basic Channel work: http://www.dubplates-mastering.com/

    There are multiple other amazing mastering engineers out there, just check the sleeve notes of your favourite albums to find out who mastered what, then search for their contact details!

    As for mixing electronic music, well that's a whole different area. Due to the nature of electronica, which is often made in home studios by one or two people, it's usually mixed by the person who is producing it. Other people can correct me if I'm wrong, but I'd say that dedicated mixing engineers would mostly be people who are used to working with bands (where you can have more than four or five people and they're all experts on their own instruments but need help getting all the sounds to sit together), but I'm sure there are some out there that would mix an electronica (I hate that word!) album album, unfortunately I wouldn't have any good suggestions about who would though.

    Is Porky's still going ?

    I remember ' Another Porky's Prime Cut ' used be scribbled into the run out groove on records.

    His sidekick at the time Denis Blackham is still working at his own facility up on the Isle of Skye in Scotland

    Lads pardon the ignorance, but what exactly is Mastering? Why is it so important? Are there any examples of a track before and after mastering so I can hear the difference?

    ok in real layman's terms. There's a final stage in making a record after the mixdown where you compress, limit and eq the track to make it seem a lot louder. This is mastering.

    One of the best mastering engineers in the world, Bob Katz, has a good website where he gives in introduction to what mastering is: http://www.digido.com/audio-mastering.html

    Mastering is actually a lot of things, he wrote an entire book about it which I thoroughly recommend called "Mastering Audio". Reading this book made me realise how little I know about the mastering process and how important it is to leave it to the professionals.

    In answer to Paul's question, I actually think the Porky's mastering house mightn't be going any more, but I believe he's still working as a mastering engineer somewhere else. I seem to remember seeing a Youtube video of him talking about music and mastering but I can't find it now.

    Cool, Porky's scribble on records was part of my youth. I hope he still is Mastering.
