Sigh. Its the same every year with EP.

Line up is released. Everyone moans. It sells out anyway. People go and have an amazing weekend and remember why they love it so much.

Just incase your to lazy to click that:

I'm not saying Oxegen is perfect, its not. But its come a long way in the past 3 years. I had 0 complaints last year.

And you'd go by that opinion poll?

If it had been chosen by a panel of adjudicators who were travelling to all the major festivals in that summer as opposed to being judged by a stupid poll murdered by young piss heads in typical irish fashion, then I would take note.

I think 240 euro is far too much for a ticket to go to EP. Then again, I have already bought a ticket so more fool me.

On the music side of things there are a heap of acts I plan on seeing, schedule permitting: Alabama 3, Basement Jaxx, Bat for Lashes, Bellx1, Billy Bragg, Brian Wilson, Damien Dempsey, Echo and the Bunnymen, Explosions in the Sky, Fionn Regan, Flaming Lips, Fleet Foxes, Four Tet, Jape, James Murphy, Lisa Hannigan, Low Anthem, Madness, Magazine, The Michael Niman Orchestra, Okkervil River, Richmond Fontaine, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Seasick Steve, The Wailers and 2 Many DJ's.

More acts than catch my eye on the Oxegen line-up to be honest. I guess I'm in the minority when I think its a pretty solid line-up but no one can deny that the majority of people leave EP feeling like they had a really fun weekend. That has rarely been my experience at the four Oxegen/witnness festivals I have attended. And I don't know if you can put a price on that.

Can't wait. Think it's a great line up, Richmond Fontaine were an unexpected delight to see announced.

    Lovely stuff.

    I feel the same.

I dont know what people are expecting when they give out about the line-up being poor....

I'm really waiting for the likes of Grizzly Bear, Bon Iver, Villagers, Passion Pit, Dan Deacon, Cymbals Eat Guitars, Patrick Wolfe, and others to be confirmed before I go, yeah, damn good line-up, worth the ticket price.

Well you can at least cross one act off the list of names you're hoping to be announced, because villagers are already confirmed for EP this year. Wouldn't mind if a couple more of your list was added, mind!

Sorry, allow me to change my opinion based on a random survey.

Having been on both sides of Oxegen (camper and staff), I stand by my view that it is horrendous. I did have a great time when I camped, but at the same time was surrounded by scumbags and people without respect for others.
Someone will come around now and say "Ah but you're at a festival!!!" No need to lose manners and basic common courtesy for others at a festival.
The staff issue I won't get in to, but it was a pretty poor experience.

I go to Electric Picnic every year and probably will again this year, so there's been plenty and highs and lows (being turned away from Modest Mouse due to an overcrowded tent tops that bill!).

However, last year I was disappointed with the line up for probably the first time. And it's far more crowded, commercial and expensive with every passing year. Even kind of lost the 'relaxed' vibe last year, though it's still a million miles from the problems at the other festival.

In my humble opinion, the line-up for Oxegen is miles better this year, 240 is in no way justified by that line up for electric Picnic (well probably not any line up, but definitely not that one).

This is me too. This will be the first EP i miss and i don't think i'll feel i'm missing out on any act that much. Last year at times too the relaxed vibe normally present at EP was nowhere to be found.

I'm contemplating going for Explosions In The Sky alone, although if no more bands I like are booked i could do Belfast or Sheffield for cheaper.

Really? Sweet! Must've skipped over them when looking at the line-up.

I clearly agree €240 is too much for a festival, but ****** is the same price, and I got mine before the line-up for €200 anyway. My personal opinion is that yes, there are bigger names playing ******, i.e every Tom, Dick and Harry will recognise most of the people playing, but I think that EP have gone for quality over popularity, with lesser known, but really amazing bands.

I worked there with Body and Soul last year and will be doing so again this year. Being there a week beforehand is great. Getting to see/help the place being set up. And free tickets! Huzzah!

Disagree completly. I know 90%+ of the EP line up and have seen over half the bands playing at some stage before i think oxegen has a really high quality of act playing regardless of popularity which imo has nothing to do with how good a band is.

More annoyed with it. i love that festival but can't justify going to it thid year! I also think there's a can't speak bad about EP' attitude knocking around - not just on boards, one of mt good friends keeps going on about the amazing line up, and all he can name on it when asked was mundy and lisa hannigan - i'll tone my rants down a bit!

    Jaysus Mundy??

There's nobody forcing anyone here to go to either Festival. If you think the line up is crap dont go. Vote with your asses, i'm just waiting for someone to pipe up about the EP line up that had Doves, Arcade Fire and i think the Flaming lips as well, to say how 'amazing' that was.

I dont go for all that reki or massage ****, but the line up at Electric Picnic the last three years has been to my liking.

I'm going to both this year, even though i'm only going to Oxe on the Saturday to try and fit in Doves, Elbow and Nick Cave.

The basic arguments being made here revolve around Oxe being full of skangers with a great line up, or Electric Picnic being 'chilled out' but with an exploititative commercial element to it.

At the end of the day its the music that i'd be going for, and its always what you make of it. Every concert is sh1te if you have a negative attitude going to it.

Even some people will find Mundy entertaining, but i swear if my poor eardrums are subjected to fcuking Galway Girl at any stage, there will be hell to pay.:D:D

Edit: Maybe we should start a thread thats a major bitch fest over the two of them, rather then having a discussion thread on EP that focuses on comparing the line up with Oxe? This has turned into a debate, rather than a discussion!!!

For my five cents i'm going to see Okkervil River, Flaming Lips, Fleet Foxes, Orbital and a good few more.

Do you really think acts like Snow Patrol, The Killers, The Script, Razorlight, Lady Gaga, The Coronas, The Blizzards are chosen because of their musical ability, or just because they will pull in a crowd? I've no problem with that line-up, as I imagine it would seem brilliant to Oxegen's target audience. But I believe EP go out of the way to pick high quality, less mainstream headlining acts, in the interest of the festival more than the profit.

Again it's our definition of quality that differs. I see very little on the EP line up that would make me go, so i'm not. I see more on the Oxe line up that is to my liking so i'm going. THe bands you've listed above can be balanced by quoting D Dempsey, Bell x1, MGMT, Fionn Regan, Lisa Hannigan and others. Granted while the oxe line up has a more popular feel, what generall happens is most of the crowd go and see these and leave Foals et al free for the rest of us to check out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,791 ✭✭✭electrogrimey

But the people go to the festival in the first place for the line-up, so you'll have a troop of Lady Gaga fans singing Poker Face all weekend, which isn't really my idea of a good festivial ;)
And I'm currently shutting my eyes and refusing to look at your post any longer, as you just places Fionn Regan and Damo Dempsey on the same level of bad as Razorlight and The Blizzards...at least give me back Fionn Regan?

    +1

If anyone is heading these are the one band I would not want to miss. Saw them in Dublin and Amsterdam, Dam gig was possibly the best i have ever seen.

Was that with Eluvium? I thought he was perhaps better, though not by much!

TBH i didn't rellay get Eluvium at all. If i remember right i thought that he was just sitting there pressing a play button on his comp and then picking up the guitar/playing keyboard along to the track.

Eluvium was mostly looping. As in recording a bit.. then playing it back and then playing over it. I found it nicely chilled out but was an odd support for Explosions.

It was layered guitar samples. I thought it was excellent. They're both on the same label too.

Anyone know if the Comfy Crapper will be back at the Picnic this year?

I remember last year hearing someone say that they weren't going to be back in 2009 but not sure if that's true.
