Look fashionable. My friend who worked in Bershka said it's based on how you look during the interview.

I used to work in River Island and for my interview I wore a suit.

Edit: By the way, when you go in you'll be asked to pick out an outfit you like. You have to tell them why you picked it out and why you liked it. That's how they tell if you're fashionable. Little tip: Pick out a FULL outfit - jewellery, accessories and shoes will get you bonus points.

I work in River Island now and for my interview I just wore clothes that were in the store currently. That's definitely what I would do and no way would I wear a suit, not even if you're going for a managers job. I'd go with a pair of jeans n a blazer 'cause blazers are a really good seller for us right now and are just the right amount of smart! Good luck!

Was just about to say that!! Also...it is always a good idea to know 3 fashion designers you like and be able to explain why they appeal to you. This is a Q often asked in fashion retail interviews.

By the way...what's it like working for RI? Do you have to work every weekend, thurs night etc? It looks manic in there sometimes!!

I loved working there and was really sad to leave, but I was offered my dream job and couldn't turn it down.

The part-timers where I worked either did both Saturday and Sunday, or Thursday and Friday night. Some did a different combination, but usually they did two days. They generally worked a half day too, so they worked until 3, or started at 3.

I found it a great place to work as you can specialise in certain areas, i.e., you could specialise in footwear, product, cashier, stock room etc. I worked on product, and I loved it. I was much more hands on, and less about sales, as you worked on the shop layout and stuff like that.

All the people I worked with loved it and it was definitely the best part time job I ever had.

I was going to apply for a job there a few years ago. The application form scared me though, I thought shop work was so much simpler than all that fashion malarky. :pac:

    Thanks for the reply!!

I was thinking more full-time but was just wondering if you get many weekend days off.

@RaccoonQueen Yeah its a detailed application form alright...I remember helping a friend fill it in a couple of years ago!

As a retail manager I would say its is important to be clean and smart! For a part time position its a little over the top to wear a suit but make sure you are dressed smartly say trousers /skirt and a top show your personality through acessories chunky beads etc... Also do not wear jeans under any circumstances its the wrong impression. Also remeber retail is not just about dressing in pretty clothes its hard work.

I have to agree with Islay on this. Dress smart not casual. They are looking for someone who will be professional above all else. You should dress for the interview not the job.

    I'm older than Minecraft goats.

I work in River Island's flagship store and before this worked for River Island for two years and in my interview for the flagship I was asked to describe an outfit from the current shop floor I'd wear on a night out so I'd say it is important to know what is on the floor before you go for the interview.

I have a part time contract but work a lot of extra hours and I don't work every weekend, only some. Part timers usually do the late night openings and weekend's but some full timers do aswell. You can tell them when you're available but really it'll depend on what sort of a contract they are hiring for.

Working in RI is great though, I love it and yes, it can be manic sometimes especially in the busier and bigger Dublin stores but that just makes time goes faster and it's preferable to working in a quiet store which I did before!

Hey. I technically worked in pretty much all the River Islands over a period of two years. Firstly dress fashionable. Not necessarily a suit, but it cant hurt. I did wear slacks heels and a shirt for my level 2 interview. You are better off erring on the side of caution so I would say definitely get a really nice shirt, whether you choose to wear it with black skinny's or whatever, or a pair of slacks is up to you.

Never got asked about designers in the interview, but do be aware of upcoming trends. Like coral is going to be big for Summer, and the usual Block colours etc. Which RI is it. Some are way nicer than others!!

re River island ....I would deffo go for a suit , skirt no shorter than knee length. and accesorise with small jewelery , nothing too big or loud.
best of luck , valery. :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,264 ✭✭✭Cookie Jar

Even if your only on an 8 hour contract.. in the months of nov and dec you will defo get more as it is madness.
I'm only on a 12 1/2hr contract but have 25 hours this week.
If you work hard they will give you extra hours if available.
