Now I know that their have been other threads on the institutional abuse of children by the Catholic Church, but listening to TV3 Good Morning Ireland a person emailed in the above and also mentioned how they were preaching to us about the evils of divource - at the same time the great family man Haughey was supporting them and talking about " Irish family values " Words defie me.
I was going thru my teens when all of this was going on, and I remember the sheer frustration of wondering when this bloody place was going to pull itself into the 20th century.
Bad and all as that was, when I think of the extremism and fanatism of the Catholic Church to be lecturing us on contraceptives while children were raped and molested across the country, all I can compare us to is the fanatical hypocrisy of states like Saudi Arabia, Iran etc.

Of course they were against contraception, you don't need it if your victim is male, duh

The Catholic Church, fanatically supportive and protective of the life and welfare of a child, but only before it's born.

After that, to hell with it.

Don't be silly. This was all before god invented aids to punish gay people

In fairness <5% of priests actually raped anybody.

Most of them just beat people.

And that condom policy would have been set in Rome, by the Pope and his cardinals, who had no children to rape.

So, to answer your OP, it's not weird that the Church was lecturing on condoms because
    (1) If they hadn't then the Vatican would have investigated;
    and
    (2) Most priests knew about the beatings and the slaps etc, but you can bet that most did not know about the sodomy.

What probably happened is that those priests who were gay/paedophiles volunteered for the jobs that involved working with children (most priests never did that kind of work), and so you had schools where most of the staff were willing to look the other way/ cover for each other/ make sure that the staff who were not in on it, never found out.

Oh, and you had a State and a people who didn't give a rats.

EDIT: And, since of course we only really understand the nature of recidivism in sexual predators recently, and since the Church could never admit that it had paedophiles as priests (probably not even to themselves), they thought a change of scenery would fix the problem . Probably only the Bishops or higher would have been able to see the patterns of abuse, and most of the time the abuser was moved out of a diocese (is that spelt right?) meaning that it was now another Bishop's problem, and the first Bishop never heard of any repeat attacks.
Thus, what should have been easily discovered, was kept hidden.
And then when the Church did notice, it did exactly what it shouldn't - it tried to save face.
It tried to deal with these things in-house, and, well, we all know how that went.

But didn't it start in monkeys? Does that mean that monkeys are gay?
or did he decide to pi$$ off the tree huggers and test the aids on animals first?

I'm starting to like this god dude, does he post on boards too.

Maybe it's all a big accident, on day the priest dudes brought the kids to the zoo (handy cover), the zoo keeper let the kids cuddle a monkey but when the priest had a go, he got a little carried away.

5% is the highest possible figure. The real figure could be less then 1%.

And even if it is a million, there are 19 million priests who didn't.
They don't deserve to be labeled as paedophiles.

That's still child abuse mate. The motives are the same.

I see a difference in a man having sex with a nine year old boy, and a man having sex with a sixteen year old boy.
If it's rape, then the first man is a paedophile, the second man is probably just gay.

More condoms = less catholics. It was just basic self-preservation.

Any source for this, or is it speculation?

Jeez, some people have real chips on their shoulders. Being debaptised, removing god from the Constitution, lambasting the pope because he was forced into the Hitler youth. The amount of people that love to bash the church is unbelievable. We don't want to hear whatever grudge you have against them, these things happened in the past and belong there. There were bad priests but most are good and have still the church does more good than harm.

You are entitled to be whatever religion you want or lack of for that matter so why continue to bash and degrade something others hold in a better light. Go write to the Editor on the Irish Independent or something, whinging on an internet board will get you nowhere in your vendetta against the church, but it sure of hell p's alot of people off. Most people don't want to hear it and the saying goes "talk to the hand cause the face ain't listening".

Rape is a power thing, it's rarely about sexuality.

I think you'll find that 100% is the highest possible figure, besides 1% is too high. It's time the state made a decent gesture and removed the church completely from the education system in Ireland.

aye, let's just sweep it all under a carpet and it'll go away.

It's an estimate that I heard on the radio a while back.

What you have to remember is that most priests worked in libraries etc, and never really came into contact with children. The numbers who worked in schools were actually quite low, and most of them didn't rape anybody.

Also, most rapists were serial attackers, with numerous victims.
It only takes one rapist working over several years to do alot of damage.

It's mad how some RC's can defend this really. I mean, if the church was lying about something so important, what else could they be lying about eh? Hmmm

Rape is a power thing, it's rarely about sexuality.
I've always thought that that was rubbish, since most rapes are the result someone who is known for the victim having sex with them while drunk (stranger rape is in the minority), but even if it is true who you rape is determined by your sexuality.
