Smell of petrol in car!

Hi folks, My girlfriend filled up her car with petrol this evening and there's s strong smell of petrol in it - she said she didn't over fill it! It happened before a while ago and went away. It's a 97 Ford Fiesta. Any ideas what it could be?

This may sound silly, but was any petrol spilled while filling? The smallest amount of petrol stinks.

Does it happen every time she fills up?

If you're concerned get it looked at. In the meantime, don't smoke in the car
