Over 120km last year less than a minute separate Clonliffe from Rathfarnham. Who will win the day this year? Sometimes these events come down to logistical things. Has everyone done a training run on the relay leg they are to run to familiarise themselves with the route. Do people know how to navigate the highways and byways of Wicklow to the start of legs. Little things can make a big difference.

Boards AC have a solid team so we'll be looking for a reasonable result. It'll be fun in any event :)

Likewise, I can assure you there was at least one guest on the Rathfarnham team :D

And indeed it was logisitics that was Rathfarnhams undoing. I'd say that T-runner got a few alarm clocks as christmas presents :)

The Wicklow Way Relay this year will be on Sat. 6th June

As usual we hope to make this event as accessible as possible for everyone.

With this in mind there are 8 stages and 7 different ways of forming a team
    (see below)

    Wicklow Way Relay Rules

For teams of two to eight runners to be made up as follows
    · Teams of 2: Open
    · Teams of 3: to include a lady or vet.
    · Teams of 4: to include a lady and vet. (may be the same person)
    · Teams of 5: to include a lady and vet. (may not be the same person)
    · Teams of 6: to include 2 ladies and 2 vets. (may be the same persons)
    · Teams of 7: to include 2 ladies and 2 vets. (only one may be the same person)
    · Teams of 8: to include 2 ladies and 2 vets (may not be the same persons)

Boards AC have already entered a team of 8. I've been advised that the threshold of 30 teams will be reached early next week, so if you want to run this, time is almost up. List your name here, and we'll link this thread to the imra forum, so anyone who wants can PM you to get you on their team. Please cross out your name when you're on a team. If enough Boardies get their name up here quickly, they can enter another Boards team,

    Free to run a leg

    there are 8 stages

I'm being extremly lazy here, but what might the distances for the 8 stages be?. I'm thinking this will be the sticking point in getting ladies to join our team, since the guys will probally all want to run the shortest leg first!

The WWR is a great day out. I did this 2 years ago and the sun was cracking the stomes. Looking at that facts spreadsheet I didn't think I had the second fastest time on my leg since the race began. Sure its good to know.

    Whats people's favourite WWR leg?
    Whats considered the toughest?
I've a gra for leg 7 'cos its long and its a training route I've used a lot. Having said that its distance makes it tough, but the climbs aren't formidable.

I think Enduro wrote before about leg 6 being tough on the WW end to end he did. Reckon its between that and leg 5?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,492 ✭✭✭Woddle

I wouldn't have a clue but I'm delighted to be doing leg 3 as it's the shortest (I think)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,608 ✭✭✭donothoponpop

Reckon if you were running the whole length, the hardest thing about leg 6 would be leaving the Glenmalure Inn behind;)

My tuppence worth is that leg 5 is both hardest and best. Its in a magical setting, starting as it does from Glendalough, but the climb up around Mullacor is bloody tough. Each bend in the road leads to more hard upward slog. However, once you run past the railway sleepers at the top, the view along the whole Glenmalure valley is magnificant. Great trails for fast running on the descent, nothing too crazy or technical. And of course, ending at the above mentioned pub.

Why oh why did I assign you this leg, shouldda kept it for meself:D

Hmm, I suppose I better get the finger out, get my hill fitness back and find myself a team, although it depends on wheather I'm on the bikes that day! The WWR is usually the most enjoyable race of the year for me, due to the whole atmosphere, and the team effort which brings out the best in everyone. You're not just running for yourself, but for everyone on the team!

I've only ever run leg6 (I could do it blindfold by now, raced and recced it 7 times over the last 2 years!), and its a brilliant leg with 2 tough but steady climbs and an insane final downhill 2km with the worst (or best :p) descent the final few hundred metres so ya can give it everything before you fall over the finishline.

Any opening bids for Timaay? :D

Leg 2 is last night plus another 30 minutes

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,203 ✭✭✭✭Stark

Leg 2 is a nice tough one. You don't have the summit of Djouce but you start the climbing lower at the Glencree Valley and there's no let up until you reach White Hill :) Very fast downhill from Curtlestown all the way to the Glencree Valley as well. Would love to do it again but have been roped into doing Leg 7.

Ugh, I think I'd struggle to break the hour on leg 6 this year!

My favourite is also 7, since its the longest and, as you say, doesn't have anything too tough on it.

Yup, I would consider 6 to be the toughest myself. The long long first climb is relentless, and is then followed up with a second one. Ouch. Tough gradiants on the descent too.

Which leg is best for views depends on the conditions on the day. The best views I've seen were on leg 2 on my full WW run, due entirely to the sunrise and the light it was generating.

I've done the second and third legs a number of times and really enjoyed both of them. Would really love to do either. Hopefully we'll have two or three teams next year. If anyone's looking for a team, a buddy of mine is short a couple of legs.

Race director posted on imra last night:

"Team numbers nearly at 30 limit. I expect morning post to reach it. If entry is not in post please dont proceed with it. I can not guarantee place for any team received after w/e."

Anyone still wishing to run may have a chance, lots of teams suffer last minute injuries/drop-outs, and seek replacements. So you'd better get out and recce a couple of legs!

A guest should not make a comment like that!

Its true though: a logistical error cost us the race last year. It wasnt an alarm clock I needed it was a brain. I had actually miscalculated the time I should have been at the start of my stage for: by two hours. This started a chain of events and we lost by 30 seconds inspite of Bazman breaking the record for the last leg to try and redress the situation.

You can see how badly I let the team down.

The logistics are not easy. Never leave a single point of failure if possible (even if it would take the grossest error for that point of failure to actually fail!)

Hoping to make up for it this year!

Ran along leg 5 this morning and its pretty spectacular alright. Its a nice run to do a week after Ballybraid as you appreciate the run you've done out and back along the Derrybawn ridge. An idea for a race perhaps in the future could be leg 5 outward, turn up Mullacor and back to Glendalough via Derrybawn :)

Ran leg 8 this morning, what a superfast leg! The first section along ditches was great, all excess gorse and briars had been cleared since I last ran it last year. 200m of watery slop, but after that, you hit the roads on head for home, with a fierce downhill at the end. Imagine the excitement of two or more teams neck and neck during the latter parts of this stage! It's a very suitable finishing leg for the relay.

Myself and Magnet ran legs 3 and 4 on Sunday lunchtime and it was fantastic. Running in the mountains is really the only place to be on a hot sunny day. I'm really looking forward to this event now.

Myself and earlyevening are running leg 1 tomorrow evening if anyone fancys it.

Running in the mountains is really the only place to be on a hot sunny day.

I went for a walk from Crone car park towards Djouce yesterday and then lay in the sun for a few hours to energise for the walk back. I'd normally be in agreement re running on a sunny day but yesterday was the perfect day for the lazy git inside me to have a day in the sun :D

I'm planning on running legs 1 & 2 next weekend, Saturday maybe Sunday, if anyone is round for it.
