Rockin 9.04 on both my laptop and desktop dualbooting with Microcrap.

Laptop boots in 29 seconds with a Pentium Dual Core CPU in it.
Desktop boots in 17 seconds with a Quad Core CPU.

    Impressed, this far.

Mine stopped booting. :/ I wonder if it's to do with the EXT3->EXT4 switch. I'll investigate later today.

If you did an upgrade install, and went to ext4 while doing that, I think you need to reinstall Grub.

I've just installed it on a persistant usb drive (using http://www.pendrivelinux.com/usb-ubuntu-904-persistent-install-windows ) and it looks good.

It recognised all the hardware on my laptop straight off and works well. I was booted into a destkop and on the internet faster than my windows install on the laptop :)

I'll use this for a bit before I decide if I want to move my main install up to it

It was booting for a bit though. I definitely rebooted after the upgrade. I've been lazy though. Will try to fix it tomorrow and report back. Busy day today.

I find the ext4 gives a much snappier boot, ~40 seconds to desktop
However it's not the default filesystem (in Mint 7 anyway, based on Jaunty) for some reason?

Because there is a slight potential for data corruption in some circumstances. Ext3 is a rock-solid default. Ext4 is a little less solid.... though still perfectly functional.

These are filesystems. like NTFS or FAT32. When you install Ubuntu, it formats the partitions as ext3 as default. You can however, choose to set up your partitions manually, in which case you can select ext4.

There are some benefits to using ext4, it's faster, for one. But it's still somewhat experimental, there is a slight risk of data loss in some circumstances.

downloaded ubuntu 9.04 last week, and played round with it initially using the live CD it seemed fine by me booting from the cd,
I didn't go nuclear and install it as my main os yet, but have it running on a partition on an 5 year old AMD PC and it runs grand, I did find it booted quicker than 8 for some reason, and on the dual boot windows takes an era to boot up.

That was it. A grub reinstall and I'm back in my xubuntu. :)

    Cheers.
