A former garda sergeant who had to chase a naked and violent Nigerian woman through the streets of a town has been awarded €15,000 damages for post-traumatic stress.

Michael Corduff, now retired from the Garda National Immigration Bureau, said the woman was part of a Nigerian family he had been detailed in October 2005 to bring to Dublin Airport for deportation.

He told the High Court that following an indication of resistance by the woman, on behalf of her partner and little baby, they had been taken in a minibus to Drogheda Garda Station.

While there the woman started to remove all her clothes in protest and when he tried to stop her she had hit out at him.

"Then she tried to scrape me and broke free, running naked out on to the street," Mr Corduff told the court.

He said he had chased her along the street and across a car park into a shopping centre. He had been pursuing her through the shopping centre when an off-duty garda saw the chase and joined in to help.

They eventually "secured" her in the shopping centre car park and she had thrown herself to the ground where she had been held until assistance arrived.

Mr Corduff, of Castleknock Avenue, Castleknock, Dublin, said she refused to put on her clothes. Eventually they put her in the minibus with her partner and baby and had set off for the airport.

She had remained aggressive throughout the journey to the airport. It was while at the airport that he noticed his hand had been cut and was bleeding.

Testing

He told the court, that he had the wound washed and dressed at the airport and when he visited his doctor the following day he had been advised to have blood taken for Hepatitis C and HIV testing.

Mr Corduff (56) said the possibility of contracting the diseases had played on his mind for months after the incident.

He told the court he did not know if his hand injury had been caused by a bite or a scrape.

Ms Justice Mary Irvine said Mr Corduff had been placed in a very unattractive position of having to chase and restrain the naked woman. She said he had to be compensated for the anxiety he suffered waiting for the blood test results.

well tbh, I'd be pretty stressed if i thought there was a chance i caught hep c or HIV. Imagine the impact on his family.

BTW, are these refugees especially sub-sahara not tested for Hep C or HIV?

After contracting aids you have to wait three months before it shows up on a test..

So yea, i can understand that guy being fairly stressed out for three months and the two weeks for results to come back. It would be a horrible situation to be in.

Surely she could have been put in a detention centre whilst waiting for her case to be heard? This type of stuff is crazy. In fairness, waiting for those test results to come back must have been traumatic especially as your woman seems to have been a complete psycho

€15000 though? Give the man a spliff and tell him to relax. He's a 56 year old grown man that would have had all his medical paid for. If it was a young man starting a family I would have more sympathy.

Surely doctors would have told him how unlikely it was he could have contracted anything? A test on yerone or any of her family would have had much quicker results.

Nope. When it was suggested to do this, the Refugee groups were up in arms complaining about their rights.

You can't just test someone. There is no legislation to do so and a test could only have been carried out on her if she agreed to undergo one.

So the sergeant did have to wait a period of time for his results.

Edit - until such a time exists where we do have legislation to test persons thought to have such diseases claims like this will remain common.

Now correct me if I'm wrong, and apologies if I come across a little cynical, but isn't the Gardai getting paid quite well (I'm assuming a 56 yr old is anyway) for the work they are involved in?? E.g. occasionally putting their body on the line etc etc.

So when he actually had to put his body on the line......ah sure here's another 15k for you?

Yes I can see how it is traumatic to be faced with the possibility of disease, but there is something slightly off here imo.

EDIT: Another poster touched on it. It would be like a sea rescue worker getting paid damages, for getting the flu or something.

all in a day's work in fairness. gardai are paid to put themselves in potentially life threatening situations so the rest of us don't have to.

HIV Antibodies are only produced by the human body after a certain amount of time.. thats one of the reasons why it takes time to check if a person is HIV Positive or not.. if they are positive that means there is a presence of HIV antibodies in their system, basically meaning you are HIV Positive ,blood tests are not instant in showing this and take time, its equally as long for everyone. And then there's the point of you have to gain permission from the person to draw a sample from them.

another thought that came into my head as i was reading... why wasn't the Gda. in question wearing protective measures? i.e. Gloves ? the woman had shown signs of resisting before so maybe i better put on some gloves just in case she decides to.. i dont know ... bite me ?

Jesus, what the hell has happened to men. I mean seriously. If he had a pair of testicles to speak of, he would have been píssed off and naturally worried until the tests came back. If then it turned out he was infected with something nasty, then fine, look for compensation towards medical needs and trauma. And rightfully too. But if chasing a naked woman through the streets is grounds for "post traumatic stress disorder" and compensation on the back of it, then on the basis of that(and obviously the whole story is not known) the guy is..... wel I wouldn't like to say. Never mind as a keeper of the peace.

I know and have known men who were in war, specifically the last world war, who were exposed to real actual bloody trauma on an often daily basis and the majority of them came home and raised families and were active and useful members of their communities. Yes they were affected by it, to some degree or other, but they lived with it, and moved beyond it. Jesus, crap like this really gets my goat. Especially knowing coppers that have gone through worse, way worse crap than this and didn't whine like children about it.

Many worry about Artificial Intelligence. I worry far more about Organic Idiocy.

I keep thinking of how on the one hand you have one women from Nigeria lying about female genital mutilation and then another bully that strips naked and then streaks across Drogheda, shrieking her head off. I'd say it's a barrel of laughs for the GNIB dealing with these cases, and a complete waste of time, money and resources

Yes and no. OK maybe they should have gotten ear protection in training, but looking for compensation? Again WT jumpin F. What's next the navy bring an action because they get wet every so often?
