    Yeah I stand...if I'm not clinging onto a barstool.

I don't, I think it's an archaic representation of patriotism, which is not always the best trait in my view.

If I wanted to stand for the national anthem of any country, I still wouldn't do it. I have strong feelings against using social pressure to make people feel awkward when they do not conform to do something, especially when I believe it makes little difference constructively or creatively to anything I can think of.

    Just my two cents!

I heard in D4 they play Ireland's Call

I stand for the anthem and sing it too.

I don't agree with forcing anyone to stand for it but I do view it as disrespectful not to stand for it. To me the anthem is a symbol of the sacrifice made by so many to bring freedom to the Irish Republic. I respect that sacrifice that was made so I stand.

Now I know if there was a Cork anthem ('the banks of the Lee', perhaps?) Dudess would be out of her seat like a rocket, hand on heart, singing at the top of her voice with tears streaming down her face :D

If you were in England or France and their anthem was playing and everyone else was standing would you still stay in your seat, like a 'disrespectful foreigner'...or would you stand?

I'd stay in my seat, social pressure is no reason to do something you don't particularly have any other reason to do.

Same goes with freedom to be honest, I see freedom as a loosely defined term, and I don't see the English as my enemy, as the last verse implies.

    "the saxon foe"

Yes. Usedn't to, because I had a lot of complicated theories about nationalism and violence, but I've moved on from this simplistic stage. Now I think there are (sorry for slight thread creep) different kinds of nationalism. There's the kind that is expressed by attacking others; and there's the kind that is expressed by having a community that's committed to sharing and helping each other, and to shared roots, and to including those who don't share those roots, and working together.

They play Amhrán na bhFiann in pubs? Heavens!

Odd, the most vociferous mouths against Ireland's Call when it started being used came from the Lansdowne crowd, at least in my experience.

While my nether regions are suitably grateful for your assessment of them, do you not think that merely standing and mouthing the words is at best an empty gesture?
There's better, more meaningful and more impactive ways of showing your patriotism.

I remember at my debs two years ago, towards the end of the night they played the Irish National Anthem. I didn't think much of it an just stayed sitting where I was, then all of a sudden the girl I brought to the debs stood up with her hand covering her heart. I was a little surprised at this because I didn't think people actually stood for the anthem, especially like that. Anyway do you stand for the anthem or do you just ignore it?

Then your not an real Irish man. You should take pride in it as we only have it because we fought the Brits and drive them out

I was at a 21st in a pub in Tipperary where Amhran na bhFiann was repeated three times in a row until some idiot got the message IE quit talking and stand up. Proper order.

It's precisely that kind of archaic thinking that makes me refuse to do it. In my eyes nationality or being a 'real irish man' as you call it has very little to do with standing up and repeating something that should have been revised after the peace process, to reflect the majority of Ireland's current attitude to our biggest partner in trade, and our friends in the UK.

Just because I don't see the English as my enemy does not mean that I am not Irish, and I would argue the same for the OP.

As for 'driving them out'... the English are more a part of Ireland than ever now, and we of their country. We coexist well together, and it is because people in the EU were smart enough to catch up towards the end of the twentieth century and not repeat the same bloody mistakes that Europe had continued for thousands of years.

For sporting events: yes. As someone else said earlier, you can't beat belting out Amhran na bhFiann in Croker.

I'd only stand/sing along in a pub if it was before a sporting event on TV, and if other people were doing the same thing.

You know the words of Amhrán na bhFiann are different to The Soldiers Song?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 19 ♠Jay♠

If it isn't a literal translation then I apologise, but I was under the impression that it was. (an impression I gladly concede)

There exists several published versions, I'm going by the copy provided by the department of foreign affairs in the english language.

If the english version still exists and is used however, the sentiment of it is much the same.

It's uninformed and ill considered drivel like this that sadly continues to put weapons in the hands of deluded cowards who shoot from the shadows and explode bombs from a safe distance. Real men?

Also 'we fought the Brits', I'll ask my grandfather if he remembers you.

Yes. It's a pity though, that it hasn't been played for quite some time. Some pop song is played instead

No surprising, all the mods on this site are Unionists. Its about being respectful, Irishmen died for this country and standing for our National Anthem is a just a small thing to do. I would love to give a slap to someone like you Dudess

You don't seem to understand the concept of keeping the moral high ground do you? :P

The more OTT reactions like this that are posted, the more and more my own beliefs are confirmed. Why we can't have a reasonable polite debate on this is beyond me!

The State is the people of Ireland not the sorryarse Government. It is fitting to show respect for your fellow citizens.

The Saxons come from Germany and invaded England so unless it says the "the angle foe" it strictly isn't referring to the English. ;)

I stand whenever it is played, so that must make me a dick.

Self loathing is not an attractive trait in anyone.
