Do you stand for the Irish National Anthem

I remember at my debs two years ago, towards the end of the night they played the Irish National Anthem. I didn't think much of it an just stayed sitting where I was, then all of a sudden the girl I brought to the debs stood up with her hand covering her heart. I was a little surprised at this because I didn't think people actually stood for the anthem, especially like that. Anyway do you stand for the anthem or do you just ignore it?

It just happens naturally for me. It seems like the right thing to do. There's nothing like singing the anthem before a big game in Croker, sends shivers down the spine!

I would stand at a game or something but at the end of the night after a dance, no. A tad off topic, I've seen other nations at sporting events putting their hands on their hearts (USA for example) but not Ireland.

At footy matches, and at the drunken end of the night when the band plays it :D

There was another thread. I'm expecting much better results on this poll most traitors that don't stand have been found and shot.

It's cheeky of you to even ask. Of course you rise.

I'd watch that implied personal abuse there, Dudess.
I stand whenever it is played, so that must make me a dick.

Self loathing is not an attractive trait in anyone.

I do and I sing along too!

I can never get up in front of a crowd. In the privacy of my own home, hell ya!

I think she was aiming it at people who tell you to stand for it... not everyone who stands for it.

    UP! UP!
Father Jack likes us to stand for this particular piece of music.

I didn't say people who stand for it are dicks. I said people who say others should stand for it - i.e. force their views on them - are dicks. Patriotism should be a choice.
Self loathing is not an attractive trait in anyone.
That's always trotted out when it comes to the patriotism argument. Not seeing a reason to be proud of the random bit of land you happened to be born on does not signify self-loathing.
I am not proud to be Irish, but using that logic, I am most certainly not ashamed of it either, hence "self loathing" being irrelevant.

For those of you who do stand for it. Do you also know the anthem as well? because it just seems weird that some people don't even know what they're standing for.

I'd stand out of respect, but I would take a lead from others and follow them tbh.

In my sister in laws pub in Cavan you'd get lynched for not singing it let alone not standing, yet at our wedding reception, my wife asked the DJ not to play it at the end of the night because she finds it cringing.

At sporting events, yes I'll stand for it and sing it.

In a military capacity, I'll stand to attention and salute it.

In a pub though? There's a good chance I'd already be standing but I certainly won't sing along or do any of the hand on heart bollocks because the end of a night out is one time the anthem shouldn't be played.

Meh, the least anyone should do is stand and respect it. We always do it in our local pub....

    Yes.
and nearly any anthem. Its a mark of respect.

Same way as you respect a church or any religious house when you enter. But you don't have to agree with their teachings.

I only know the first line so I think for me to stand would make me a hypocrite.
Not that I would stand however.

I stand and sing at things like sporting events, civil events, etc but I hoestly don't think it should ever be played at the end of a night in a pub/club/drunken gathering so in that case I would't care.

If someone didn't stand while I was at asporting event of civic event it'd be very vexed, if out of nothing more than respect the least you can do is get of your lazy fat arse.

I used to when I was a child. I've somewhat moved beyond feeling anything but contempt for the vast majority of institutions that trawl it out in an attempt to curry national feeling.
I'd sing it again if and when the current State was worthy of celebration and respect basically.

No, and if we were talking about the same situation using the US National Anthem, still no. Its not the Venue for it.
