Yep that seems to be it alright. Of course as soon as I asked the question I found it in my notes, written in big letters.
    "Centripetal acc. = Friction force"

The acceleration in this case is what keeps the car going around the bend. If it weren't for friction, you'd get some serious understeer.

Oh yeah... I meant d too... yep. Em, just out of curiosity, why would the centripetal force come from the road? And why is it "fictional"?

roads are banked to stop cars flying off them at high speeds

Do engineers get multiple choice questions these days?

Yea.. keeping the old stats up you know?

"Fictional" forces are basically forces due to the motion (ie acceleration) of the body, as opposed to some physical... eh, force. As in, you're in an accelerating coordinate system and measure some weird acceleration-causing force seemingly arising from nowhere, which, if you were in the "lab" frame would just be the resultant acceleration.

...If that makes any sense. That's how I think about it anyway.

However, after reading over the last few posts, it seems likely they were talking about friction.

*shakes head* Theoretical Physicists and their 'coordinate systems'... :P

My guess is it was a typo.. Either way, the answer is D as said above. If it was a typo then they would have mentioned it in the exam

    Don't be so precise...

Engineering is all about taking guesses. :)

No wonder grads know sweet FA these days.

Educated guesses. Pity they don’t give you multiple choice questions in the real world.

    Did you win???
I hear there was no cash prize.. bit gay..

Group B something won the accuracy test, group C1 won the distance test (with a sawn off crutch and so much torsion the steel rods on both sides were bent into v shapes). I don't think they managed to get sponsorship for cash prizes this year. What did last year's winners get? Is there some kind of competition with the project in 2nd year too?

There is a 200 euro price this year.
