"Please Insert SIM" message when SIM already in

I switched on my phone to get a "Switch on phone without SIM?" message and have tried taking the battery out, re-inserting SIM several times and no luck :) Is is a regular occurrence for SIM cards to do this or has it died? Nokia phone btw, have it a year and no problems till now.

When did it stop working?

Possibly faulty sim? You can get a replacement one for free instore

Try cleaning the gold area of the sim and the metal points it makes contact with first though(soft rub with methylated spirits)
