Sterling/Euro Exchange -Job Dilemma

    Hi,

I have recently been offered a good job in northern ireland - however the salary(sterling) they are offering will mean a 10K decrease when converted to euro and compared with my previous salary. ie 40k to 30k. I am planning on living just south of the border and driving up everyday so will not be availing of cheaper rents etc as was recommended to me before.

If the sterling was stronger with respect to the euro then the salary would be better - does anyone have any idea what way the exchange rate will go over the next 6 months - year?

    Any advice appreciated!

I wasnt bragging!! Give a person a break - I was made redundant in september last year, and this is my first sign of a job since then. Like anyone would I was trying to research the pay details and the sterling/euro rate will be a big factor in what I actually do get paid.

Check tax rates up there too but IIRC you pay tax where you live so probably won't matter.

If you have been out since September and remembering that wage offers are far lower than they were last year I don't think you would get your previous wage anywhere soon. You have been out of work for half a year so are down nearly 20K so far. Had you had a 30K job in september you would only have been down 5K.

Instead look at the job as a 20K increase on 10K dole it isn't going to be the end of the world. And there is nothing stopping you continuing to look for a better job.

If you live in the north for a year/ six months (research it) you would be entitled to avoid VRT on one car , not a biggie since now based on emssions but if you are planning on a big purchase it might be worth considering. Health care and school books are also cheaper up there.

We are in the Euro zone.
Sterling may go up or down or may even enter the euro.

If sterling goes up you win.
If sterling goes down , Plan B is to move to the North or look for another job.

Thanks for the replies :-) I have accepted the job offer, and as you said above if sterling goes up I win and if it goes down well I'll prob consider moving up altogether.

Even in the last week since you posted this- sterling has risen ~4% against the Euro. The prospects are for a longer term weaker Sterling- versus a strengthening of the Euro- however exchange rate do not necessarily follow economic fundamentals.......

I work with two people from the north and they are benefiting from the strength of euro when converted to sterling. however on the other hand one of my friends works in newry and her wage value has decreased with the change! hard one to predict but id say see how things pan out and if you're losing out you can consider moving up north!
Good luck with the new job anyhow :D
