I'm switching from NTL Analogue to Digital, a friend of mine already has the Digital+ DVR recorder box that he's no longer using.
If I just get the basic digital box & card can I use his recorder box and save myself a few quid in the process?

Firstly, because each card is paired to a particular box. If you get a basic box and remove the card from it, this card will not work in any other box. If you put it into the DVR, it will not accept it and hence not decrypt any channels.

Secondly, the DVR requires a DVR subscription. If you don't get DVR, UPC won't enable the DVR subscription on your card. So even if you could swop the card from your basic digital box into your DVR, the recording subscription wouldn't be enabled so the DVR won't function as such.

Thirdly, the DVR remains UPC property at all times. If the reason your friend doesn't use his DVR anymore is because he cancelled his subscription, UPC are going to want the box back. If he doesn't return it to them, they will charge him for not doing so (€150 or thereabouts IIRC).
