    I have three favourites
    1. Suzanne. Leonard Cohen
Jesus was a sailor when he walked upon the water
He spent a long time watching from his lonely prison tower
And when if knew for certain only drowning men could see him
He said, All men will be sailors then until the sea shall take them

    2. I have forgiven Jesus, Morrissey
    The name speaks for itself.

    3. Nick Cave, Into my Arms
I don't believe in an interventionist god
But if I did I would ask him not to touch a hair of your head, leave you as you are
And if he had to direct you, direct you into my arms.

Great topic, I hope there are some good responses.

There are lots of peaceful atheist lyrics, everyone knows Lennon's "Imagine" and Pink Floyd have a few atheist bits and bobs, but Heavy Metal is the greatest source of anti-religion lyrics.

Can't beat the 'ol bit of Slayer. I know the lyrics aren't great but hey, you wanted religion-bashing didn't you?
    JESUS SAVES

You Go To The Church, You Kiss The Cross
You Will Be Saved At Any Cost
    You Have Your Own Reality
    Christianity
You Spend Your Life Just Kissing Ass
A Trait That's Grown As Time Has Passed
You Think The World Will End Today
    You Praise The Lord,
    It's All You Say

Jesus Saves, Listen To You Pray
You Think You'll See The Pearly Gates
    When Death Takes You Away

For All Respect You Cannot Lust
In An Invisible Man You Place Your Trust
    Indirect Dependency
    Eternal Attempt Of Amnesty
He Will Decide Who Lives And Who Dies
    Depopulate Satan's Rise
    You Will Be An Accessory
    Irreverence And Blasphemy

    Lead - King

Jesus Saves, No Need To Pray
The Gates Of Pearl Have Turned To Gold
It Seems You've Lost Your Way

    Lead - Hanneman

    Jesus Saves
    No Words Of Praise
No Promised Land To Take You To
    There Is No Other Way

    Other tidbits:

    Cult

    Religion is hate
    Religion is fear
    Religion is war

    Religion is rape
    Religion's obscene
    Religion's a whore

There is no fucking Jesus Christ
    There never was a sacrifice

    Read Between the Lies

Evangelist you claim God speaks through you,
Your restless mouth full of lies gains popularity.
You care not for the old that suffer,
When empty pockets cry from hunger.
    Circle of Beliefs

    Circle of beliefs
    Secrets never keep
    Living in a lie
    Right before your eyes
    Born without a brain
    Helpless is your name
    All you do is pray
    Living is your pain

    Mentally so small you can't
    Accept another side
Your point of view a memory
Because it doesn't mean a thing
    The resurrection's waiting for
    A world without sin
    The temples will crumble
While awaiting for it to begin

All your life he's been the cause
A man impaled upon a cross
    Pure religious holocaust
If religion dies it's not my loss

    Darkness of Christ

Mankind in his insatiable search for divine
Knowledge has discarded all biblical teachings

Realizing that the strength of religion is the repression of
    knowledge
All structures of religion have collapsed
    Disciple

Drones since the dawn of time
Compelled to live your sheltered lives
Not once has anyone ever seen
Such a rise of pure hypocracy
I'll instigate I'll free your mind
I'll show you what I've known all this time

God Hates Us All, God Hates Us All
You know it's true God hates this place
You know it's true he hates this race

    Homicide-Suicide
Hate heals, you should try it sometime
Strive for Peace with acts of war
The beauty of death we all adore
I have no faith distracting me
I know why your prayers will never be answered

God Hates Us All; God Hates Us All
God Hates Us All; God Hates Us All

    New Faith

Holy man open up your eyes
To the ways of the world you've been so blind
As the walls of religion come crashing down
How's the ignorance taste the second time around

Tell me how it feels knowing chaos will never end
Tell me what it's like when the celebration begins

Welcome to the horror of the revelation
Tell me what you think of your savior now
I reject all the biblical views of the truth
Dismiss it as the folklore of the times
I won't be force fed prophecies
From a book of untruths for the weakest mind

This one's pretty cool. Satan and his cronies attacking a church:

    Haunting the Chapel

    The holy cross
    Symbol of lies
Intimitade the lives of Christian born
    Speak of death
    The words of hate
    Anticipation grows amongst the dead
    Hell has seen
    The priests attempt
To bring forth their lord of the cross
    Strike of twelve
    Raise the dead
    The chapel comes under attack

    The ghosts of sin
    Torment the priests
Their altar will soon be destroyed
    Heaven's palace
    Turning black
The church now belongs to the dead
    Blackened magic
    Infest with lust
    Lucifer rules supreme
The crystal ball shows unknown fate
The last thing that's heard is the screams

Ghosts from hell invade this feeble shrine
Heaven's holy house will fall in time
Satan's morbid soldiers chant in lust
Destruction of the church we'll burn the cross

Attacking angels as they pray to god
Tormented preachers hail the twisted cross
    Haunting the chapel
    Hell's demons prevail
    Death has come
The house of god has failed
    Haunting the Chapel

That was the easy going end of the anti-religion spectrum. Deicide are at the top. Actually, they're OVER the top! You gotta laugh. Here are a few snippets:

    Deicide

    Three days to rise
If he lives again he is sure to die
    I killed Jesus
Just to see him bleed on his pupped throne
    I am evil
I'm the Deicide and I killed the lord
    No more reasons
I will kill the world in another form

    I rule this world

    NAIL HIM

    Kill the Christian

    Armies of darkness unite
Destroy their temples and churches with fire
Where in his world will you hide
Sentenced to death, the anointment of christ

In due time your path leads to me
Put you out of your misery

    The death of prediction
    Kill the christian

    Kill the christian...dead!

    Confessional Rape

    Father integrity, perverted secrecy
Molesting innocent children you're trusted with
What is vowed you cannot live, unbound by celibence
Indulge in sacrilege, to serve unto Satan

Manipulate through threats of god's hate
    Abhorrently extorted
    Molest the faith, confessional rape
    Denial is aborted

    Blame it on God

You are the one who killed his own son
We are the ones you're blaming it on
Lust was created beginning with hymn
When we indulge we are guilty of sin
Torture our lives with confusion and lies
    Mass contradiction, religious facades

    BLAME IT ON GOD
    BLAME IT ON GOD
    BLAME IT ON GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LIAR

This one seems to be about those Magdeline Sister type schools...
    Father Baker's

There exists a place of agony
    Where children are held captive
Belt across the back, the nuns attack
Believe in god or be beaten to death

Work to earn your keep, no time to sleep
You better know the bible verse
Or go without and die of thirst
Resent your birth - thanks to god!!!!!!!!!!!

    This one's gas:
    Mad at God

Behead you with the bible, the book of god and failing son,
There is no resurrection for god has left us to Satan,
Reach out in desperation receive his empty words of love,
Revel in mans creation; the light of god has turned to shit.

    So's this:
    When Heaven Burns

Wonder and wait as I stare at the cross,
Thinking in ways that have Christ at a loss,
Kick your ass out through the lord's pearly gates,
When heaven burns and engulfed into flame.
    Blasphemes villain, the killings begin,
    Murdering Christians and torturing them,
    Conquering churches and slaughtering lambs,
Doing it all for my love of Satan... (I love you Satan, my lord)

Just to even out things after my last post, here's Pink Floyd's Time:
    Far away across the field
The tolling of the iron bell
Calls the faithful to their knees
To hear the softly spoken magic spells.

    John Lennon's Imagine:
    Imagine there's no Heaven
    It's easy if you try
    No hell below us
    Above us only sky
    Imagine all the people
    Living for today

    Imagine there's no countries
    It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
    And no religion too
    Imagine all the people
    Living life in peace

They all sound a bit heavy I prefer fun

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pj-GIAACClc

[Dean:] Hey there's a big airplane goin' by.
    [Rodney:] Get it! Go! Go!
[Some Recording Guy:] It's on the track
[Rodney:] Leave it! Get it on the track!
[Joe:] Get it! Get it! Catch it!
    [Dean:] I got it :)

You've got a methodist coloring book
    And you color really well
But don't color outside the lines
Or God will send you to Hell
    'Cause God hates war
    And God hates crime
A' but he really hates people
    Who color outside the lines

You've got a methodist coloring book
    Don't color outside the lines
'Cause if God doesn't strike you with lightning
He'll at least make you go blind
Good people get sent to the attic
Bad people will roast in the cellar
    But there's a special kind a' Hell
For those who just won't learn to color

God is gracious, God is good
So let's color in his book
God wears cotton, God wears rayon
He can mend a broken crayon
God is honest, He don't take payola
Let's all thank him for our Crayolas!

You got a methodist coloring book! [x3]
    (ah..oh..oh) [x2]
You got a methodist coloring book! [x3]
    (oh..oh..oh.. [a very emotional performance])

You've got a methodist coloring book
    And you color really well
But don't color out side the lines
Or God will send you to He

From the excellent cello quartet apocalyptica:
    Dirty little secret
    Dirty little lies
Say your prayers and call me rare
    Save your soul tonight

    Drift among the faithfull
    Bury your desires
    Aberrations fill your head
You need a place to hide
    And I am

    Do you remember me?
And the kid I used to be?
    Do you remember me?

    Chorus
When your world’s come crashing down
    I want to relive.
Your god is looking down on me!

    I’m not Jesus,
    Jesus wasn’t fair!

    You confess it all away,
But it’s only **** to me
Your god is looking down on me!

    I’m not Jesus,
    I will not forgive!

    No I won’t! (2x)

I’ve thought you were a good man,
I’ve thought you talked to god.
Your hippocratic messiah and child abusive turned satanic.

    Do you remember me?
    Do you remember me?
And the kid I used to be?
    Do you remember?
    Do you remember?

    Chorus
When your own world comes undone,
Let me be the one to say:
Your god is looking down on me!

    I’m not Jesus,
    You can’t run away!

    And the innocence you spoil
    Find a way to live
Your god is looking down on me!

    I’m not Jesus
    I will not forgive!

    I won’t forgive.
I won’t do whatever you want to.
    (2x)

    Do you remember me?
And the kid I used to be?
Not the same as I used to be!
    Oh, do you remember me?

    Nooo!

    Chorus
When your world’s come crashing down,
    I want to relive
Your god is looking down on me

    I’m not Jesus
    Jesus wasn’t fair!

    You confess it all away,
But it’s only **** to me!
Your god is looking down on me!

    I’m not Jesus,
    I will not,
    I’m not Jesus,
    I will not forgive!

Oh, I will not forgive, yeah yeah!
    No, I will not forgive!

And of course, Metallica deal with the issue quite a bit as James hetfield grew up in a Christian scientist family:
    Pride you took
    Pride you feel
Pride that you felt when youd kneel

    Not the word
    Not the love
Not what you thought from above

    It feeds
    It grows
It clouds all that you will know
    Deceit
    Deceive
    Decide just what you believe

I see faith in your eyes
Never your hear the discouraging lies
I hear faith in your cries
    Broken is the promise, betrayal
The healing hand held back by the deepened nail

    Follow the God that failed

    Find your peace
    Find your say
Find the smooth road in your way

    Trust you gave
    A child to save
Left you cold and him in grave

    It feeds
    It grows
It clouds all that you will know
    Deceit
    Deceive
    Decide just what you believe

I see faith in your eyes
Never you hear the discouraging lies
I hear faith in your cries
    Broken is the promise, betrayal
The healing hand held back by the deepened nail

    Follow the God that failed

I see faith in your eyes
    Broken is the promise, betrayal
The healing hand held back by the deepened nail

    Follow the God that failed

    Pride you took
    Pride you feel
Pride that you felt when youd kneel

    Trust you gave
    A child to save
Left you cold and him in grave

I see faith in your eyes
Never you hear the discouraging lies
I hear faith in your cries
    Broken is the promise, betrayal
The healing hand held back by deepened nail

    Follow the God that failed
    New blood joins this earth
    And quickly he's subdued
    Through constant pained disgrace
The young boy learns their rules

With time the child draws in
    This whipping boy done wrong
    Deprived of all his thoughts
The young man struggles on and on he's known
    A vow unto his own
    That never from this day
    His will they'll take away-eay

    Chorus:

    What I've felt
    What I've known
Never shined through in what I've shown
    Never be
    Never see
Won't see what might have been
    What I've felt
    What I've known
Never shined through in what I've shown
    Never free
    Never me
    So I dub thee UNFORGIVEN

    They dedicate their lives
    To RUNNING all of his
He tries to please THEM all
    This bitter man he is
    Throughout his life the same
    He's battled constantly
    This fight he cannot win
A tired man they see no longer cares
    The old man then prepares
    To die regretfully
That old man here is me

    What I've felt
    What I've known
Never shined through in what I've shown
    Never be
    Never see
Won't see what might have been
    What I've felt
    What I've known
Never shined through in what I've shown
    Never free
    Never me
    So I dub thee UNFORGIVEN

    whoa, whoa

    Never Free
    Never Me
    So I dub thee UNFORGIVEN
    You labeled me
    I'll label you
    So I dub thee UNFORGIVEN
    Never Free
    Never Me
    So I dub thee UNFORGIVEN
    You labeled me
    I'll label you
    So I dub thee UNFORGIVEN
    Never Free
    Never Me
    So I dub thee UNFORGIVEN

At the risk of showing my age:
"Losing my Religion" by REM springs to mind

"One of us" by Joan Osbourne had some interesting lyrics also. E.g.
"What if god was one of us
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make his way home
Just trying to make his way home
    Like a holy rolling stone
Back up to heaven all alone
Just trying to make his way home
    Nobody calling on the phone
Except for the pope maybe in rome"

How about Dropkick me Jesus Through the Goalposts of Life :D Actually I think that might be truly religious!

Also Oh Your God, by Deus:

    I believe in anything
As long as it just has that ring
Of truth and I can lay down my head
Cause I seen so many people lost
I still believe at any cost
    That we musta been misled

    Oh your God!

So it tragedy would make you feel
You need a divine drug to heal
And a better god, cuts a better deal,
    That's what you got

See I'm stuck in this ungodly game
And I only have myself to blame
In the name of the father, in the name of fame,
    In the name of what?
In the name of something bigger
    Your god can only snigger
And the sight of all this rigour
    With sex the only trigger
For love… or was it the other way round?

Cause it's only beauty that makes me sweat
And to me it seems the best bet yet,
In your head or in your bed
    That's my hallowed ground

    Oh ooooh…
    Oh your God!
    Who looks…
    … over my shoulder?

    Aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh……..!

Another vote for Judith, Perfect Circle
You're such an inspiration for ways
That i will never ever choose to be.
Oh so many ways for me to show you
How your savior has abandoned you.

    Thank your god.
    Your lord, your christ
    He did this,
    Took all you had
    And left you this way.
    Still you pray, never stray,
    Never taste of the fruit.
    Never thought to question why.

It's not like you killed someone.
It's not like you drove a hateful spear into his side.
Praise the one who left you
    Broken down and paralyzed.
He did it all for you.
He did it all for you.

Oh so many ways for me to show you
How your dogma has abandoned you.
Pray to your christ, to your god.
    Never taste of the fruit,
    Never stray, never break,
    Never choke on a lie,
Even though he's the one who did this to you
    Never thought to question why.

It's not like you killed someone.
It's not like you drove a spiteful spear into his side.
Talk to jesus christ as if he knows the reasons why
He did this all to you.

He did it all for you.
He did it all for you.

Love Me and Leave Me by the Seahorses - Penned by Liam Gallagher
    Don't believe in Jesus
    Don't believe in Jah
    Don't believe in the wars
we fight just to prove how real we are

I believe in lovers, I believe in friends
I believe in heaven here on earth
    'til the, the beginning ends

    Love me and leave me
    Love me and leave me
    Love me and leave me
    Leave me to love
Don't you ever tell me it came from above
Just love me and leave me
    Leave me to love

I believe in heroes, I believe in stars
I believe that we'll meet one day
say hello in some astral bar

I believe in brothers I know
    you know who you are
Here's to those who bore us and
    made us what we are

... which all goes to show just how ENORMOUSLY, CRINGINGLY, ADOLESCENTLY CRAP metal bands are at writing lyrics. Oh my good godlessness, the only thing worse than reading some of those attempts would be to have to listen to them screamed sincerely at you!

I'll take your word for it, Myksyk!

I haven't really been arsed reading any of the above. I'll take a decent tune over a soapbox every time. :)

Heaven forbid you actually listen, then make a judgement. Wild generalisations are much easier to make of course.

EDIT: That said, I don't see what people see in Slayer. I know it's mostly tongue in cheek but I just don't get them.

Here's a song I'm listening to at the moment, 'Head Rolls Off' by Frightened Rabbit. It's all about how you should make the most of this life instead of just living for an afterlife. Great song.

Jesus is just a Spanish boy's name
How come one man got so much fame?
And to enemy, it's pointless to anybody
    That doesn't have faith
Give me the cloth and I'll wipe my face.

When it's all gone, something carries on
And it's not morbid at all
Just when nature's had enough of you
When my blood stops, someone else's will not
When my head rolls off, someone else's will turn
And while I'm alive, I'll make tiny changes to earth

    So you can burn me
Cause we'll all be the same, the same way
Dirt in someone's eyes cried down the drain
I believe in a house in the clouds
And God's got his dead friends 'round
He's painted all the walls red
To remind them they're all dead

And you know when it's all gone, something carries on
And it's not morbid at all

Just when nature's had enough of you.
When my blood stops, Someone else's will not.
When my head rolls off, Someone else's will turn.
You can mark my words, I'll make changes to earth

While I'm alive, I'll make tiny changes to earth
    Tiny changes to earth
    Tiny changes to earth

Yeah, I warned you about the lyrics. Pretty crap.

    "I went to a shop,
    I bought soda pop,
    Then I went home,
    I saw a gnome,
    I ate some meat,
    It spilled on my feet"

My favourite religion bashing song is actually a religious song. "Suffer little children". Classic.

I haven't really been arsed reading any of the above. I'll take a decent tune over a soapbox every time. :)

Hey, all the songs I quoted are fab! The top three melodious good looking songwriters of all time, even if the lyrics aren't as radical.

I don't even know where/who I got the song from it just turned up in the mp3 directory after I moved house...

That's made me think, a medley of Hail, Holy Queen and the Memorare sung by someone like Rolf Harris would be a divine hymn to Our Lady and and amusing athiest anthem
It would go something like this:

Hail holy Queen, Mother of Mercy
    To thee do we cry
    Poor banished children of Eve
To thee do we send up our sighs
    Mourning and weeping
    In this valley of tears

Refrain: Always look on the bright side of life

    To thee do I come
    Before thee I stand
    Sinful and sorrowful.
And after this our exile prove unto us
That there is no malevolent cruelty in
The blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus

My favourite band (Cradle Of Filth) is really terrible; it's the ultimate proof I have a lot of taste, and all of it bad.

One of their albums is a concept album of the Bible from Satan's perspective. It's not exactly anti-religious, but it sure would annoy a lot of people. The fact it is about Satan would piss them off too.

Dream Theater's "In the Name of God" is pretty good, though I mainly listen to it for the actually music as opposed to the lyrics
    How can this be?
Why is he the chosen one?

    Saint gone astray
With a scepter and a gun

    Learn to believe
In the mighty and the strong

    Come bleed the beast
Follow me it won't be long

    Listen when the prophet
    Speaks to you
Killing in the name of God

    Passion
    Twisting faith into violence
    In the name of God

    Straight is the path
    Leading to your salvation
    Slaying the weak
    Ethnic elimination

    Any day we'll all be
    Swept away
    You'll be saved
    As long as you obey

    Lies
    Tools of the devil inside
    Written in Holy disguise
    Meant to deceive and divide
    Us all

    Listen when the prophet
    Speaks to you
Killing in the name of God

    Passion
    Twisting faith into violence
    In the name of God

    Blurring the lines
    Between virtue and sin
    They can't tell
    Where God ends
    And mankind begins

    They know no other
    Life but this
    From the cradle
    They are claimed

    Listen when the prophet
    Speaks to you
Killing in the name of God

    Passion
    Twisting faith into violence
    In the name of God

    Hundreds of believers
    Lured into a doomsday cult
    All would perish
    In the name of God

    Self-proclaimed messiah
    Led his servants
    To their death
    Eighty murdered
    In the name of God

    Forty sons and daughters
    Un-consenting plural wives
    Perversions
    In the name of God

    Underground religion
    Turning toward
    The mainstream light
    Blind devotion
    In the name of God

    Justifying violence
    Citing from the Holy Book
    Teaching hatred
    In the name of God

    Listen when the prophet
    Speaks to you
Killing in the name of God

    Passion
    Twisting faith into violence
    In the name of God

    Religious beliefs
    Fanatic obsession
    Does following faith
    Lead us to violence?

    Unyielding crusade
    Divine revelation
    Does following faith
    Lead us to violence?

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord:
    He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword:
    His truth is marching on.

    Glory, glory, hallelujah!
    Glory, glory, hallelujah!

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

Say what you like about the soapboxing on Judith, but you can't deny the awesomeness of the riffage!:)

I always thought the lyrics were "**** your God", but "Thank your god" makes more sense i guess.

    Good call on Imagine.

    Hardly my favourite since I literally only heard it about 4 minutes ago, but it's on topic anyway;

Completely forgot Faithful by Pearl Jam! It starts as an attack on the whole prayer thing, that no-ones listening to them etc, and ends with the most important thing in life, being faithful to your loved one, and using the energy people waste on religion to just love that special someone in life :)
Plaque on the wall says that no ones slept here
Its rare to come upon a bridge that has not been around
    Or been stepped on
Whatever the notions, we laced in our prayers
The man upstairs is used to all of this noise
    Im through with screaming

And echoes nobody hears, it goes, it goes, it goes
Like echoes nobody hears, it goes, it goes, it goes
Were faithful, we all believe, we all believe it

And echoes nobody hears, it goes, it goes, it goes
Were faithful, we all believe, we all believe it
So faithful, we all believe, we all believe it

    M.y.t.h. is
Belief in the game controls that keeps us in a box of fear
    We never listen
    Voice inside so drowned out
Drowned you are, you are, you are a furry thing
    And everything is you
Me you, you me, its all related
    Whats a boy to do?
Just be darling and I will be too
    Faithful to you

I love "Craig Christ" by Stephen Lynch the comic and musician.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPdFrW076R0

    "Everyone knows Jesus
The man who healed the lame.
    Well, I am Jesus' brother,
    Craig is my name."

Then he goes on to say some less than nice stuff about his brother...I'll let you find out for yourself.

This is his one about a priest and really not for the fainthearted or the easily offended.

What, no-one mentioned Rush yet? Their last album, Snakes & Arrows, has several songs on relevant topics, such as Faithless, Armor and Sword, Far Cry, and The Way The Wind Blows. Then there's Malignant Narcissism, an instrumental inspired by a line from Team America: World Police, with a bizarre video showing the tangled growth of religions in the world. Note who makes a guest appearance at the end... 8)

Ye Hypocrites, are these your pranks
To murder men and gie God thanks?
Desist for shame, proceed no further
God won't accept your thanks for murder.

    ―Robert Burns

    If there was a god,
Then why is my arse the perfect height for kicking?"
