Does anybody else find it hard to believe this decade is nearly over?

I find it amazing how quickly the last 9 years have flew. You know the way when you see tv footage from, say, the 1970's or 80's, it looks all characteristic of those times? Well, I wonder what camera footage of this decade will look like when we look back at it in the 2030s say! Will all the trends, advertising etc look all "2000's-ie" or will it just look like some decade wherby everybody will look at each other and say, "eh, did anything actually happen there?"

So yeah, does anybody else find it strange that next year we'll be into the 2010s? Why have I so few memores of the last 9 years!!!

No. It took exactly the same amount of time to pass as all the other decades.

Digital capture just made it clearer.

I remember bits and pieces but I dont feel like I have 112 months worth of memories in my head...those months went far too quickly!

In years to come this decade will be a clip of two planes flying into buildings and a picture of a graph, with a red line going up till 2007 then falling down to nothing.
Bit of a ****e decade really.

Is it just me, or did the 00s/naughties/whatever not have its own particular and distinctive style? The 70s and 80s, in terms of fashion, outlook and music, are immediately identifiable. They seem distinctive, somehow, in a way that the past decade simply didn't.

    Soullessness maybe?

Yeah, the 00s could certainly be seen as the age in which celeb-obsessed cultural vacuity truly came of age.

I have a sort of theory that people during the 60s, 70s, 80s, and to a lesser extent the 90s, tried to make their time period distinguishable from the others. People in the 00's didnt care or else just stole fashion, music etc from the earlier decades

It comes with age...the 70's 80's or 90's are easily identifiable to you because you were at an impressionable age at that time.

Now though everything sounds bland and unoriginal.

It isn't that everything has been done before, it's that you have seen more and new things are just less interesting because you may have other more pressing concerns.

You'd need to tell me what that is before I'll remember it.

This decade certainly had a feel, just you don't notice it cos we're still in it!
Come back to this thread in 2020 and you'll see.

Hmm... If I were to sum up this decade on a grand scale, it would be:

Begins with a recession (dot-com bubble bursting)
    9/11
    Global sense of uncertainty
    War in Afghanistan
    A senseless war in Iraq
Geo-Political tensions - anti-American sentiment, a volatile Middle-East, an aggresively resurgent Russia, the rise of China
A global economic boom which was largely imbalanced and unsustainable
The rise and fall of excessive credit
A global recession of stunning severity

Ultimately, I reckon the 00s will be seen as the decade in which the unipolar, American led economic and political world order was severely shaken, if not almost destroyed by its own excesses.

You can't be nostalgic about the past until it is the past! the naughties are still here and now!

Things need to change/evolve a bit before you can be nostalgic about the bits that got left behind. Except for music and fashion that keep on getting regurgitated again and again.

Ah, but the reason that I compared the 00s to the 70s and 80s was that their music and fashion seemed to be genuinely fresh and new, not a recycled variant on something that went before.

00's is without a doubt the decade of the internet. Biggest memories will come from 9/11 terrorist attacks, Iraq war, 1st US black president and the global recession.

1700's maybe. back in those days we had to wait a whole 3 hours before we'd have enough steam just to get the computer running. longer to get the modem going and speeds were measured in bits per minute yet everyone stood around gazing in awe at the mechanical computer as the typewriter appeared to type a letter by itself at a painfully slow rate.

we had no bittorrent back then just private servers where you'd download a thing onto a punch card and have the piano play by itself. still I have fond memories of playing Doom 0 and Initial Fantasy on a steam powered behemoth of a machine that took up the basement of the whole freaking castle

Anybody have any idea what the next decade is going to be called?

You know, the 70's, 80's, 90's, naughties (stupid name, ffs.), and then the ... Not a clue. Tens? doesn't sound right. Teens? But there's 3 years that doesn't have teen in it.

The 00's were some very "memorable" years, as far as fashion goes.

Everybody thinks the 80's were the years fashion forgot? Well, the 00's copied the forgotten years. There's frigging jumpsuits back in fashion now. They weren't nice the first time round. They're still not nice. The only ones that can remotely get away with them are thin waif like creatures. Unfortunately, we don't get many of them around here. Good hefty cultchie girls crowbar'ed into them does not a pretty sight make.

EMO. Oh f*ck off. Skinny jeans, c*nt.

A mild resurgence in Grunge. Yay. If I could get away with it, I would.

Again, skinny jeans, this time teamed with ballet pumps. Irish wimmens should not wear them. No matter what you think, you don't have the figure for them. Noone does. I like big butts and the rest of that song, but it makes your arse look fat.

And all the rage at the moment? That neon futuristic retro transexual ****e because of that Lady GaGa c*nt. Oh your so cool, in de pub, drinkin yourself into a drunken, puking mess, with your luminous clothes. I swear on my life, I was driving through Cavan one day, and outside a pub was this young wan, wearing:
    luminous yellow high heels
    luminous yellow knee high stockings
    luminous yellow hot pants
    luminous yellow tee-shirt top
    luminous yellow hair band
luminous yellow big hoopy ear rings
    luminous yellow bangles and braclets
    luminous yellow handbag
    luminous yellow eye shadow
and in her hand, luminous yellow plastic sunglasses.

She looked like a friggin tennis ball. Only she wasn't round, she looked quite trim.

Music wise? Think the 00's were the years of **** loads of number 1's that noone particularly liked!

Umbrella-ella-ella-ella-ella-ella-ella-ella-ella-ella-ella-ella No wonder Chris hit you a slap, he thought you were stuck on a loop!

That Basshunter git. Every scummy civic and golf going round town blaring this out. You're worse than Scooter!

Speaking of himself, Scooter attempting to come back every couple of years. Stop. Not in the next decade please.

2005 saw the Crazy Frog, and people with no imagination everywhere celebrated, and got the song by the millions.

Sporting events kinda passed me by, not a sports fan, people.

It also saw events (in no particular order other than what I can remember) such as

    9/11
    Madrid bombings
Resurgance in Lebabon/Afganhistan/Iran/Iraq/DirkaDirkastan (I know, blatant Team America rip, but hey, its 4.20 in the morning, brain is not hectic)
    Hurricane Katriona
    JP 2 died
    Tsunami in Malaysia
George Bush lasting 8 years in power without actually knowing how he got there
    First Black US president
    dotcom crash
Failure of Y2K crash (I was so looking forward to this.)

Thats all I can think of at the moment.

Its funny how people get all philosophical and nostalgic after 12am. But as the old saying goes 'the early bird catches the worm'. Indeed, if you are like the bird you might catch a few pics in KYN before they sober up and start surfing their own posts..... :pac:

I don't remember much of the last 10 years. I find it hard to believe I was pissed for the whole decade, but its not impossible.. Either that or I've chosen to forget.

Not really - it's called getting older - the older you get the more speedily time seems to pass. I remember when I was a kid that a week seemed to last as long as a month does now.
