Limited shelf life of HTPCs?

I've had my HTPC for almost 3 years now and I'm ahving a few problems with it while watching live TV through Media Centre, image slowing down or stalling and it's starting to crash the whole system. I can watch recorded tv through Windows Media Player no problem.

I was speaking to a friend recently and he reckoned that my PC has had it's day due to the fact that watching live TV on Media Centre causes the Hard Drive to work much harder than it would normally making the shelf life much shorter than normal. Makes sense, but is it true?

don't htpc's need maintenance just like normal pc's?

Personally I'd reformat and clean install any windows box every second or third year.

I've actually just reformatted it the other day, but the same problems remain.
