Im planning on using an old laptop as a media centre pc. I tried one of those vga to s-video cables but couldn’t get it to work (laptop doesn’t have an s-video port). So I am thinking of getting one of those PC to TV converters, can anyone recommend one? Whats the picture quality like?

Hi kazzer. I got one of these things a couple of years back. Essentially what it is a convertor console unit a little larger than a mobile phone. On the PC side there's a VGA cable, 3.5mm headphone and USB cables. On the TV side there are a variety of cables, I dont even know what half of them are but I only plugged it onto a component or scart.

The quality is OK for watching movies but it is virtually impossible to read the standard desktop text on the tv screen. Also, the console may need to be adjusted slightly for the correct screen position. Because its USB powered this has to be done every time you switch on the laptop.

I havnt used mine in a while because I got a new TV with dedicated VGA input which is excellent. I wouldnt reccomend it for a dedicated HTPC setup because text is unreadable, but if youre just palying a video file now and then its OK.

I'm not sure of the name of what I got, I'll look it up. Cost about €80 i think (too much) from Maplin.

    Hope this helps.
