Text speak, aside from being all-round annoying, would hamper anyone learnign English.

I hated trying to decipher French txtspk

If there are youngsters on boards im sure they are already emotionally scarred from what they read here anyway.

I don't think there is much point to it when you have a full keyboard and no 160 character limit. Any imagined time you save by skipping a few letters can be negated by the teams of cryptologists I employ to understand some of these postings.

Is it really "not allowed"? I thought it was merely frowned upon. Which is kind of pointless. I furrowed my brows really hard the last time I read txt spk here. Did nothing. Nada. Zilch. Bupkus.

Actually, people who txt spk should be limited to 160 characters per post. And no letter 'e'. That'll show them. :)

Damn right i do. I wont answer any of my little brothers texts with text speak. Reason being: it takes me about 10 mins to get what he's saying.

Damn straight. I've ceased trying to decipher messages from my teen sister.

The poll is a little difficult to understand - does the "Ya" mean that text speak is NOT allowed?

Most of the people I'd normally text use normal English but then again I get the odd text here or there that's full of 'lyk' and 'bk'.

Leaves me thinking does the time saved not typing a few letters actually save time overall, I'd say no.

I hate texts that say stuff like "c u wn w gt dr"

Which, somehow, is supposed to mean "I will see you when myself and my band of travellers arrive at our pre-determined destination"

(ok obviously they would'nt text that i was just using a bit of hyperbole to elucidate my point,sorry:()

I can't believe that in 2009 texts are still limited to 160 charcters. A higher limit would mean no txtspk would be nessecary.

Yes. Leave txt spk for texting. I like to think that beneath the ignorant exterior of boards lies intelligent and enlightening debate which is vital to the youth of our country in order to achieve that skilled and educated work-force we so crave.

Backwards compatability. The 'inventor' of SMS, a Finnish man by the name of Matti Makkonen, recently got an award for the invention, in 2008. It all started in 1984, in a Pizzeria..

I remember reading up on technical interviews about it, the above link gives you a good overview, but there are better links about, Google his name.

A study shows that it actually improves language skills in youngsters

Essentially any exposure to the written word is a good thing.

It's funny how the people who get angry over text speak are usually the first ones to go:

IBTL, FYP, UYAOG, etc. which in my opinion is far, far more annoying than text speak.

    (up yer aul' ones gash)

People still use text speak even if the message is 8 words long.

I hate text speak. I can stand abbreviations like 'cause/cos' but I can't stand words like 'soz' - it's supposed to mean sorry but it doesn't even sound like it!

Some people just can't type that fast, that's it. It's convenient for some and it's readable if you're not an OLD GRANNY STUCK IN YOUR WAYS!

Can't be bothered decoding text speak.
If you got something to say, say it right.
Lord knows some posts are mis-took into meanings that were not intended - text speak just makes that situation often worse!

People need to get their heads out of their asses. Text speak is fine if used in the proper forum and towards people who are accustomed to it. It is just a form of communication. People who believe that we should stick rigidly to the Queens English are a bit too anal retentive for my liking. Now, if someone sent in a CV for a job application written in text speak then they should quite rightly be stoned with large jagged rocks.
