If Betty and Phil want to pop over here on their hols I have no problem with it. Plenty of Irish people visit the UK for business and pleasure, no reason
why the royals should be any different or receive any trouble visiting here.

Saw her on Sky news last week. Apparently she was scolding Silvio Berlusconi for shouting across at Obama. I couldn't see what the hell they were going on about. Good aul Sky, making news out of nothing as usual....

....and they've had Mary Mac over on several occasions

it's depressing how many retards still care about this ****.

this is The AH forum after all, even those that don't care just join in the rant. ;)

Personally I'd be moderately nationalistic, and it wouldn't bother me if she came except as someone else pointed out, ye could do with spending the money that the massive security operation costs on more urgent things in these tough times.

What the prim and proper Brits used to call us officially, i.e. Ireland.

Technically she has visited Éire..... Éire was the name of the state as in the Irish Constitution of 1937. Under articles 2 & 3 of that constitution the Irish state laid claim to all the land on the Island of Ireland, these articles were amended in 1998 (as we know) however article 4 wasn't. So as far as I'm concerned Éire refers to the entire island and not the 26 counties of the republic.

Soon, I hope. The gigantic Union Jack I hung outside my house is beginning to make the neighbours gossip.

I didn't go into town to see Clinton when he came 'cos I was freezing. I'm sorry I didn't though..I like him. Wouldn't be interested in going anywhere to see any of the royals. I might've went up to have a look if Diana was visiting though, she wasn't a bad auld skin.

Before reading this thread I had never heard of someone being offended by Ireland being called Eire:confused:

Not a bad proposal they've been dragging the corpse of St. Terese up and down the country for years, maybe we could dig up Di and make a few bob off her..... or was she cremated?

    Is she still alive?

I'm going to bring a union jack, dress up as a muslim and burn the flag.
Let people think Ireland is full of fanatics. Ok, it's just one person pretending, but wait for the tabloids to get a hold of it.

In the wise words of Gerry Adams....

"Mrs Windsor can come and go as she wants."

You beat me to it. I'm not a fan of Adams but I nearly split my sides when I heard that statement. Wasn't it:

"Mrs. Windsor can come and go as she pleases."

    Quality.

You'd think we'd have finally moved on from all that 800 years bullshit, but no the visit of an elderly woman apparently drives most people into frothing frenzy.

It's not like she'd be coming over to give a speach along the lines of "Look, this independance thing was a bit of a giggle, but funs over, back in the union with ya"

It's all in the context. For me I'd call it a very minor pet hate. I mean if you are speaking English to someone even a Spanish person you don't just start calling Spain Espana so why do it when speaking to an Irish person, it just doesn't sound right for one thing. I dunno it's like sort of a way for a certain British element to differentiate between N.I and the Republic, but anyway no realllllll big deal I suppose.

Anyway it's not half as bad as someone refering to Britain as the mainland

yea I thought that too but I looked it up on google and it seems to be 'wants', so im not sure

Still a great line though, complete dismissal of any importance she may hold.

I know we've our fair share of problems with certain taxes but can you imagine being british in a recession and knowing your paying tax into that sh1te, lol
