    To compliment the Recent Purchases thread :P

    Just curious as to what others have been watching recently trying to get some inspiration as to some new movies to look into myself.

    On my day off this week I managed to squeeze in -

    Rumpelstiltskin
    A modern day fairy tale retelling much akin to the Leprechaun series. Nothing ground breaking but some fairly humorous scenes throughout. Probably not a film that will be enjoyed by all but I thought it to be a good hour and a half time killer.

    The Thing
    Much to my shame I had never seen this film before now. Excellent film, some brilliant scenes, such tension in places ! I can see now why its so highly thought of. I think it will be gettign a re-watch again soon.

    Killer Rats (AKA Rats)
    This one wasnt great to tell the truth. Another standard fare killer animal film really. The rat CGI is also pretty terrible in places.


    So, what have you been watching recently - try to add a little on the film as opposed to just a list of titles.

    Watched Fetus Wednesday night.Frickin loved it.

    Red Room 2 - Not as good as the first one but there was some quality nastiness in it before it descended into dumbness.

    Philosophy if a Knife - Going to tackle this this afternoon.Its 4 hours long and from what Ive heard pretty heavy going but I want to watch it all in one sitting.

    The Gateway Meat - Good movie with some great gore scenes including an awesome
    Columbian necktie scene

    Demons 1+2 - 2 very enjoyable splattery horrors from 2 of the masters Argento and Bava.

    Just got through a double bill of Teeth and Flight Of The Living Dead the other day, can't recommend these two films highly enough!

    Teeth is just a concept that was dying to get made with nobody having the cojones to do so. Painful viewing for any male and hard to bring yourself to watch it but so beautifully executed it would be a shame to miss it!

    As for FOTLD, what a carnival ride! It wears it's piss taking well out on it's sleeve yet is also an excellent zombie flick with some genuinely classic moments to add to the genre!

    Last night it was Zombies ! Zombies ! Zombies ! AKA Strippers VS Zombies
    A straight to DVD release following a group of strippers and a group of prostitutes who cant stand each other trying to get through a (small) zombie outbreak.

    Not going to win any awards anyway but I enjoyed it, most of the strippers are portrayed as realy ditzy and thats where a lot of the humour comes from.

    Noticed a couple of nods to other films in there including Grindhouse and Snakes on a plane
    The stripclub is called The Grindhouse and someone does a rip of "that" line from Snakes.

    An enjoyable, leave your brain in the fridge kind of film, plenty of comedic gore towards the end.

    Probably not worth going to buy as I doubt it has much if any re-watch value but worth a rent at least.

    I couldnt get into FLOTD at all for some reason, took me three attempts to actually get through it all (Fell asleep the first two times). Just found it very dragged out and it couldnt hold my interest at all. Shame really, I really wanted to like it.

    Teeth is on my "to watch" shortlist though.

    Teeth
    I cant really see what all the fuss was about this film. I thought it was a bit ho-hum really myself. It wasnt terrible or anything but just not amazing. Also I felt it took forever to take off properly, the first 50 minutes or so really struggled to hold my attention.

    Monster Dog
    1984 werewolf/killer dog style offering with Alice Cooper as the main protaganist. Not terrible but not good either. Possibly only saved by how bad the two Alice cooper music videos were in.

    Midnight Meat Train
    ****ing hell I really enjoyed this one ! Excellent sense of tension throughout the film, none of this cheap scares crap. Fantastic camera work throughout. Buckets of gore. Vinnie Jones really looked the part as Mahogany (and in true form to most films he does only got one whole word to say throughout the film :D). Highly recommend this one. I did think the ending was a bit meh though.

    Want to get my hands on the book now and read the source material to see if they expalin some things a bit clearer. (Anyone know what one of Clive Barkers books the short story is in ? UPDATE - Turns out it its in Books of Blood - Volume 1)

    Go for Killer Pussy instead of Teeth.

    Heard alot of bad press on MMT.Will decide for myself though.

    Midnight Meat Train I second, crackin' film. I wasn't that miffed over the ending mainly because I've grown to be disappointed lately but principally the main product was just so good that I wasn't phased!

    Zombies,Zombies,Zombies looked like great fun but I couldn't watch it solely due to the bad (homemade Mini DV) picture look to it, it's just a niggly pet hate of mine.

    Next on the viewing list I think has to be Dance Of The Dead, anyone seen that wants to suggest against? :D Don't got me no spare time!

    For Zombies, Zombies, Zombies when you say it looks like a homemade flick are you talking about the start of the film or the trailer ?

    If its the start of the film
    Its the standard film within a film thing, thats why it looks so grainy and crap. I was thinking the same thing myself

    Havent heard of Dance of the Dead. I'm looking at laying hands on American Zombie for the weekend myself.

    I watched Midnight Meat Train last night. It was quite impressive. Very dark tense and really very violent. Vinnie Jones was perfect in it with that perpetual menacing scowl he seems to have. As the ending goes, I really liked it, I don't think the story would have half as effective if it had been the usual standard serial killer job.
    My only complaint is with the effects. I don't usually mind CGI but in a few places it stuck out and looked quite poor. Still though, only a minor flaw and the film more than makes up for it.

    Feast
    Happened to stumble across this one by accident and was pleasantly surprised. Comedy/horror with buckets of gore. Gets straight into the action. One nice feature this film had is it gives a little bio of each char as you first see them with Name, Life Expactancy etc.

    The comedy element is totally toilet humour. But yet theres something surprisingly funny about someone screaming
    AAARGH, the monsters cock is stuck in the door
    at a high tension moment.

    Feast 2: Sloppy Seconds
    Picks up exactly where the last one leaves off with some character crossover and some new ones (including a couple of Lucha Wrestling Midget's), again the gore and toilet humour elements are in full swing.

    One scene in particular stands out to me in this film though and i'm quite surprised that they had the balls to put it in such a "mainstream" horror film.
    All the chars are up on a roof, the streets are clear of the monsters at the moment, a baby has been heard crying in a car with a while. One char makes a break to save the baby and, of course, is attacked by the monsters. He's running with the child and the monsters are gaining. He looks at the child, apologises and launches the child into the air. Cue epic music and a slow motion scene where the child flys through the air ... you''re waiting for someone on the roof to grab the child. The slow motion stops and the child falls to the ground landing on its head whereupon it is consumed by one of the monsters while the guy keeps running.

    As I said a pretty ballsy scene. I was sitting there with my mouth open for a few secs after it not knowing whether to laugh or not :D

    Evil Breed
    What happens when a bunch of porn stars act in a bad horror film set in rural Ireland ? Dodgy Irish accents, appearances from Chasey Lain, Jenna Jameson and Ginger Lynn, cannibalism, inbreeding and terrible, terrible acting.

    Despite that the film does poke fun at itself throughout and never really takes itself seriously. Nearly worth watching for the terrible Irish accents alone.

    Still not as bad as Rawhead Rex

    I watched `Mirrors` there last week and liked it. Kinda reminded me of one of them survival horror console games like Resi or condemed. I kept looking for my joypad and not my popcorn when i was in the cinema.

    Took in `Quarantine` at horrorthon and loved it. That hand held camera Documentery style really suited that film. Jenifer carpenter was fantastic in it, been watching her in Dexter and it was great to see her be a completly different character in somthing else.

    Quarantine was pretty good, enjoyed that, but just absolutely loved Martyrs last night at the Horrorthon. One of the best horrors I've seen in years!

    hehe, loved Feast, never knew there was a Feast 2, must aquire! :)

    Watched Luther the Geek Friday night.Bought it on a whim and enjoyed it alot.Typical Troma fare,tits,a mad killer and some pretty good gore scenes.
    Worth picking up if you have 7 quid to spare.

    The Beast in Heat - 6/10
    Some cool nastiness (esp the pube tearing out+eating)more overgrown bush than the average forest but overall a bit sh1t.
    LOL at the hamsters on the womans stomach made out to be rats though.That made Neddy chuckle.

    Zombie Strippers last night - Interesting to see Robert Englund at the other end of the horror spectrum. Its marketed as a horror/comedy but its neither remotely scary or very funny (one or two good moments) and is obviously just an excuse to have a lot of half naked women and zombies on screen :D

    About 5/10

    Watched Candyman for the first time in years over the weekend, incredibly good.

    Manages to miss most of the cliches that befall so many other potentially decent horror flicks.

    Brain Damage
    Couldn't get into this one at all. If they had spent more time with the dialogue and less time focusing on people screaming for no reason it might have been a bit easier to watch. Some humorous scenes.

    Preferred this one. Some really funny moments. I can see why it has a bit of a cult following out there.

    Great fun and some of the special effects are still awesome looking.

    Society
    Brian Yuzna'S schlock horror/social commentary masterpiece.Some cool,although slightly dated effects by screaming mad george.Enjoyable little romp though.

    Fetus : Awesome,awesome,awesome. One of the best indy horrors of all time.Buckets of gore and nastiness.Every extreme horror fan should get this now.

    Watched Dance Of The Dead and Eden Lake, good and great respectively.

    Dance Of The Dead is interesting, kind've like an improved Boy Eats Girl which isn't hard to do I guess. Centres on a zombie outbreak coinciding with prom night. Some nice little bits of humour and good gore effects. Needed more attention towards the dialogue though. Some of the jokes are a little run of the mill and in general there seems to be lost oppurtunities at certain points.

    Eden Lake I just couldn't stop hearing about but avoided because of the seemingly similar themes to Ils, The Strangers and a slew of other films but I was intrigued as soon as I realised that it wasn't a conventional horror. Think of it as a cross between The Descent and Ils with a cracker of an ending.

    Watched Dans Ma Peau (in my skin recently).
    Interesting little French psychological horror thats worth a watch for something completly unconventional and off the wall.

    The Descent

    Excellent horror that for the first time in years had a couple of scenes that actually made me jump.. well worth the look

    REC.

    Original Spanish version of Quarantine.. excellent (albeit a bit short) film about outbreak of 'zombie-ism' in a block of flats..

    Anyone heard of this one?!.. or am I just showing my age?! (but still in my 30's!! ;)) strange film about a man getting abducted by a UFO only to come back years later to his wife and son, has an excellent (if not extremely gross) scene where a woman gives birth to a full grown man.. also includes a lifesize Action Man which was the business!..

    And of course there are the Japanese horrors which are too numerous to mention!!.. Lift scene in 'The Eye' deserves a mention though... !

    I took in UnBorn there last week. Some have tried to compare it to the Exorist, but I thought it owed more to the Ring and Grudge type of film.
    Still not a bad film at all.

    It really is! It seemed like a 'borrowed film', it just took from so many! The ones that came to mind were, The Exorcist, The Grudge, The Ring and The Thing.

    Seemed really haphazard and while the plot was decent, it wasn't translated very well from page to screen. In the end I ended up not giving a flying feck to what happened to the main character as she was an overacting eejit! (seriously, who sobs like that!) :D

    Also first time seeing Hellraiser there this weekend. I know I've been under a rock for the last 22 years! But for a film made in 87 the special effects were astounding! Like
    when the body is remade from the drops of blood.
    There was a few "WTF" moments. (EG:
    the hobo lifting the cube out of the fire at the end, turning in to a skeleton-dragon-thing!
    )

    Now I'm off to get the sequels!

    I watched Lesbuan Vampire Killers at the weekend. Put a smile on my face it did.

    Yer dam right about Unborn being overly borrowed. I think a lot of my enjoyment of that film had a lot to do with all the wemon in the cimema who were screaming and the jumpy bits.

    Did a double bill of the Fly 1 + 2 (remakes) over the weekend.(HMV twin pack for 7 quid BTW)
    Cronenbergs is still an absolute classic.
    The sequel,while not near the level of the first is still a fun,splattery time.

    unborn was just a pile of arse. lord knows what gary oldman was doing in it apart from pickin up an easily earned paycheck. friday the 13th remake was a fricken hoot some of the death scenes are fricken funny!

    are all awesome.Which version of New York Ripper did you get?There are a load of different cuts available and alot of them are heavily edited due to the violence/mysoginy (s/p) particularly
    the nipple slitting scene.
