Hi! Can anyone help me choose a decent 24" or larger PC monitor for watching movies? I have no idea if I should go for HD or which resolution, brightness, contrast, response rate I should be even considering for an acceptable performance. Some examples:

Which one do you think is better?

Also would it be possible to use a standard DVD player with a monitor of this type (scart to whichever cable)?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
You should have a look at this thread, which compares both the Dell and BenQ monitors you've listed above and has a lot of pictures of different types of content being played e.g. Blu-ray, DVD, PS3 etc.

My thoughts would be to go for the Dell; you will probably come to this conclusion yourself after reading through the above thread too.

Regarding connecting a DVD player to either monitor via scart; I would recommend using either a PC to playback DVDs or a more recent DVD player, as this would mean you could take advantage of both the DVI and HDMI connections on the Dell monitor respectively. If you are adamant about using a scart cable, then your only option, if you plan on choosing any of the monitors you mentioned above, would be to use a Scart to VGA cable such as [url=http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hama-SCART-To-VGA-cable/dp/B0002W69MY
]this[/url]. I cannot vouch for the quality or compatibility of the cable, so you would need to confirm such a cable would work before buying it.

Rsaeire, thanks for the reply. Would you not consider any other brands, e.g. Samsung or LG. There seems to be a lot of similar monitors at a similar price.

I wanted to be able to play movies without having to turn the PC on, so I think I will consider a plain DVD player with DVI or HDMI output. Any suggestions under €100 for the player?

I would indeed, but it all depends on the quality of the monitor, the price and whether it scored well in reviews.

Do you have a budget in mind and if so, what is it? There are better monitors than the Dell I recommended in my last post, however, they will also cost more. I can offer some more recommendations once you advise your budget.

€250 (€300 tops) for the monitor, €100 for the DVD player. Mind you, I am not demanding, I just want acceptable.

The Samsung DVD-F180 is a great, compact DVD player that also upscales DVDs to 1080p, can be made region free and is just under €70, not including shipping.

With regard to monitors, the Samsung T240 gets good reviews and is €269, not including shipping.

Thanks again. I will consider the Samsungs too.

My primary concern would be bleed around the edges of the screen.
Most of the LCD panels now are built in the same factory, so they will have similar contrast etc, but some models seem to have extra bleed (light from the back coming through the edges of the screen)

Also looks for monitors which reportedly have dark blacks (some monitors have technology for darker blacks), better for viewing movies. x.gif
