It would be absurd to pretend that everything's fine with DIT when it's obviously not, and it's the "Well, we'll just make do with what we have" attitude that's let the place be how it is for so long. We keep getting told that everything will be solved by Grangegorman, but I'm not going to be here to see Grangegorman, nor will, I suspect, plenty of my successors.

    The lack of buzz -

I think the main problem with DIT is that students have no identity. There is no vibe around any of the campuses and students just flock in to a few dodgy old building everyday and leave straight afterwards. Very impersonal college.

    - is only one problem, but it's a far bigger one than just a lack of student events. Sure, I'd like to have more to do on campus, but it concerns me that the lack of atmosphere seems symptomatic of a far wider morale problem, one that I've never seen elsewhere. It says to me that students don't have any faith in the SU or the College itself. They run out of the building whenever they don't absolutely have to be there. That should be ringing alarm bells, we should be looking at the reasons for that.

DIT has problems, just like any other college, and just like at any other college, they need to be acknowledged. Pretending that they don't exist out of some sort of weird misguided loyalty or gratitude is preposterous. If people see a problem, it's clear to me that making noise about it is the only way to get it fixed. I think it's safe to say that DIT won't spring into action under it's own inititiative.

It's absolutely ridiculous to suggest we should just "count our blessings" and be grateful for what the Irish education system offers us compared to elsewhere - we are a first world European country in the 21st century and we should expect and demand first world 21st century facilities.

I'm a fourth year student in BST. Just joined boards coz people moaning all the time really annoys me!!!

whats wrong with DIT cannot be solved by those stuck on computers talking and talking about their so called issues with DIT or DITSU. What is needed is people to stand up to DIT, it is the responsibility of each and every student to make the most and take the most from their own personal college experience.

DITSU strive to make student life a lot better and certainly any dealings with them i have found this to be more than true. 'Student life' however does not mean drinking and drinking will not enhance campus life. DITSU is there to represent us students at all levels and run various important awareness campaigns as well as guide our academic and welfare needs.

I felt compelled to join boards to encourage people to join the students union movement and stand up to DIT. Too long DIT have been the driving force, it is time for the 22,000 odd students to have their say. Working relationships with DIT staff is not good enough, we have strength in numbers and it is DITSU who need to represent and stand for change...none of this just getting along and coasting the year away...make a real difference not just one on the same old manifestos we see every year. The union will only represent us effectively if we are involved at every level making really decisions all along the way. (i.e. 30 odd governing councillors cannot decide the fate of the whole union...more participation is needed)

I look forward to a new union, one with real leadership and one where student life will become a priority. Flinter has the ability to make a difference in her capacity as president next year and i hope she delivers on her election promises.

I would ask all students who are giving out and moaning to do something constructive, join the union, sit on governing council, have your voice heard....come up with creative solutions and help make your campus a better place.

Having been in both ucd and dit, i think dit is a terrible college! It has no life, no student bar ect. Ucd was way better socially speaking.
    Rag week, what rag week?

Dit will only become a good college when it moves to grangegorman.

I can't be bothered responding to this in any more detail, but to sum up exactly what I want to say I'll leave you with... DITSU is a load of arse.

    Ah yes, this aul chestnut.

I went to TCD, now in DIT, currently in Universitat Leipzig (Germany) for Erasmus.

TCD used to be amazing for parties, far far superior to DIT. In my mind I'm amazed at the difference, but TCD has changed a lot since then... around the time we lost our rag trips, TCD got some new people in charge that cracked down on most rules, especially drinking ones, so as far as I can see the craic in TCD and DIT is quite similar.
TCD has two bars on campus, but they don't exactly give away free pints etc.

I used to blame all of DIT's woes on the lack of campus, but here in Leipzig there's no real campus either, yet it really does effectively do the whole "city is your campus" buzz.
I think the main difference is Leipzig SU has a venue (the largest in Europe apparently) and it's a place for students to gather and party. It was a really old building that the SU took over and turned into a massive facility. If the DIT students had something like that then I reckon they'd start developing a bit more spirit.

On the plus side, DIT has about three times the computers that Leipzig has, and I've never had a problem finding a computer in Aungier St.

Also, if you think DIT redtape is bad, just try signing up to anything in Germany... it's a real case of "take form A to office 2 and get it stamped and return the stamped form A to office 5 to recieve form B which must be stamped in office 45 and brought to.... etc. "

Anyhows, I guess I'm just saying there's bad and good in all colleges.

The one thing that reeeeeally annoys me about DIT is the fact that no-one seems to be responsible for anything. If a lecturer or admin ****s up it's always a case of "ah, accidents happen.", and there are never any consequences for the staff.

the lecturers' union has waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much power in DIT.

Example 1: In a lab, guy laughs, albeit a little inappropriately timewise but didn;t actually DO anything wrong. Lecturer comes over in his face yelling "do you have a problem with me? Huh? HUH? COs if you do, make a f*cking complaint and we'll make it a union issue and I hope you don't get into 3rd year with your attitude and other lecturers will back me up and you will be out of college with nothing to show."

Bad enough in itself, but he KEEPS coming back over to the guy who literally did not let out a peep after that during the next hour and keeps getting RIGHT up in his face saying "you got a problem with me?" If it was me I'd have involved the gardai... but that's me. But sure as hell DIT would take the lecturer's side and that's probably why the poor guy let it go. Yay. Go to college and have your lecturer bully you. Fantastic college.

Example 2: MNS shows up for college at 9. No lecturer. Following week, same class, same story. Email arrives. 2 lecturers have decided between themselves to completely change our timetable about to suit themselves. Net result is longer days for the whole class and they get an extra day off. I won't go into detail but it's a really really bloody awful change, completely unfair, completely without consultation and NOBODY WAS TOLD. So now 2 lectures have been missed. Oh and this is them finally getting the module organised - over halfway through the module. Great organisation folks. Students should be protected from that kind of meddling.

Example 3: where is my exam timetable. And why are the exams office so lazy?!
MNS: Do you know when the exam timetables will be out?
EO person: heh. No. *goes back to staring at computer screen*
Last year (07/08) I was waiting AGES on semester 1 results. Exams office should be bound to have timetables out at the LATEST, the end of the 6th week of lectures in a semester. And results should be out within 2 weeks of the final exam. Cos ya know what? IT's not impossible.

SO the big problem: DIT is a selfish bloody institute run for the staff with the students as an afterthought. (with the exception of a few good lecturers who would go out of their way to help students)

Yeah, gotta love the exams office in Kevin St. Couldn't sell me exam papers at 2.02pm on a Thursday afternoon because they were "too busy" (dealing with the overwhelming queue consisting of, wait for it, one other person in the ENTIRE office with me - and their issue wasn't even involving dealing with the same staff member). Seemingly they "only sell them at 10-12 Wednesday's and Friday's so they can cope with demand then". Yes DIT, because you're much better able to cope with a queue on a Wednesday or a Friday (when most people aren't in) than at any other time. And, you know, instead of spreading the demand across the week, you confine it to a two hour rush in a time slot on a Wednesday morning.

Unlike many of you I'm lucky, my course is organised extremely well and the department seem to see themselves as a seperate entity to DIT, ie my course is in The Dublin School of Architecture, DIT Bolton St.

One of my biggest problems with DIT is the library staff. They are the biggest MOANERS in the whole of DIT. For example I went into the library slightly after 5 last friday to return a book and one of the staff walked towards me SO SLOWLY, as in actually taking the piss. Once he got to the desk I actually thought he was going to cry. He started moaning about how they should have been out of the place a few minutes ago. I'm pretty sure it was the guy who gave a presentation (a lame one at that) at induction. Is this guy really head librarian? I could only laugh at how sad he was. I don't know how some of these people even got a job in the first place. Also i'd like to say that wearing a jersey when you're a librarian is a tad inappropriate.

I've seen this come up in other threads time and time again, no one seems to be doing anything about this

Tracksuit bottoms aren't exactly librarian material either. They should force the librarians to wear suits or something.
