Just got a whopper bill from bord gais today , and was wondering if it would be a good move /possible for me to run my hob and central heating (3 bed semi) on bottled gas instead.

It depends on the size of your house really.
If you're talking about LPG bottles, you may find that they have a very short lifetime and as they require delivery by the supplier, the cost per unit will be high.

It's very likely that natural gas will be the most cost effective method of heating your house.
