last week I got back into cycling to work (on a fixie) and it is around 70km each day (350km for the week), I found my knees a bit sore probably from the 2+hrs a day of cycling without freewheeling.

    bow.gif

though I think the sore knees are probably from the low cadence rather than the lack of freewheel

    Well done fella!

Feels good breaking the 100km barrier eh?

Your stats there are very strong - 30km/h is really good solo for that distance and I'm sure the more knowledgeable folk than me will tell you that a cadence of 90 is good. Add in a resting heart rate in the 40s and you'll probably be flying around the Wicklow 200 in no time!

Do you really think so? I hadn't even considered even thinking about doing the Wicklow 200! Now that you say it, I really would love to complete it...what do you think? Is it a proper race (like race speeds) or more of a leisure cycle? What would be the average "average speeds" be, that is to complete it in a respectable time in comparison to the other competitors? I presume it is a great experience...do many teenagers do it? Any help would be great as I know absolutely nothing about it! Thanks in advance ;)

***Probably should post this in the Wicklow 200 thread!***

What's the circuit like, seems pretty flat? I'll be heading down there next weekend.

Some info on the Rás Luimnigh here and a map here!

Just posting this to keep myself honest and confirm I've done my century for March. Did 115km Crumlin-Enniskerry-Roundwood-Ashford-Bray-Crumlin yesterday.

Comparatively easy course (though it still managed to total 1300m total ascent) but more slight inclines on the homeward journey than I had expected and they do sap the energy a bit so it was a decent training run. One or two shortish but steepish hills popped up along the way so with that and a slight headwind on the homeward 40km it wasn't all entirely flat either. So I'm reasonably happy with the 25km average speed at this stage (3hrs 58mins for the first 100km) but have a lot of room for improvement.

I do like the idea of keeping this thread going as it definitely helps me get motivated to plan ahead to fit in at least one century each month.

Well done. It was certainly a great weekend for riding. Its easy once you have done one to get more under your belt eah month. I find its more a matter of time than the challenge if 100... Your next step would be a century (you know the metric one)

How many full centuries have people done so far this year? I am on 6 so far but started in Feb ( was injured before ) ...

More than 20 less than 30.

    9 so far.

Not enough really. I think I'd be happy if i did 52 for the year, hopefully I'll be doing 2 a week during the summer to make up for the inevitable laziness of the winter and end the year with a one-a-week average.

I did 134km yesterday, cycled home to Galway on my fixie from a stag party in Mullingar. It was my first long spin on the fixie and I found it quite slow going; however the hangover and headwind wouldn't have helped matters either.

    I think I've done 2, maybe 3.

Think I've done 3. And a good few more around 95k

Too many (around 20).... I've run out of songs to sing by myself. I might by one of those 'Learn a Language' CD for use while riding. ;)

    I have either 2 or 3, I'm not sure...oh well!

I really want to do this, never mind yer 20+ Centuries already, if I manage 1 a month I'll be delighted! Clocks changing shortly will make a difference cos I'll be able to ditch work at 4 and hopefully nail some mid week 100's!
We should really get Marlbourough Cigerette 100's to put up some Jerseys for the 100 club (or would that just be in bad taste?)

NOOB to cycling but managed 2 this year so far

112km spin in February that took about 3'47' average 29.5km/h
100km spin last weekend in about 3'13' average 31km/h

Really suffered towards the end of both so I have plenty of endurance to build and probably need to eat a bigger breakfast too!

Would love to strive for this, but have been building up distance slowly and gently in the last month after a spot of IT band bother from tail end of last year (managed a few centuries then). Been off the bike since October, partly due to that, and partly mainly due to arrival of a new baby :)

Off to see the physio on Friday, hopefully that will set me up for full return, as I've signed up for the W200.

    I miss the hills :(

My second ever century ever! I only started this challenge last month, so I guess it doesn't really count! Hopefully I will get into a routine of doing a few of these a month on my own, it is a great feeling alright! Anyway, here is the route I did. This time I threw in a hill or two to test myself, I was trying out a new side of Cratloe as you can see I turned around at one point! I was near my house at 90km but continued on to bring it up to the 100km. I also attached the stats from my Polar CS200 below:

Well done. I love that climb to woodcock hill and gallows hill. Did you go all the way up to the "golf balls".
I lived on the old cratloe road as a kid, and used to regulalry keep fit during the rugby off season by cycling up there on my 5 speed peugot race. Did it over the new year, and strangely it felt more difficult than it did 20 years ago.

Hey man, its a good old climb alright. I only started using the map my ride facility in the last week because of the elevation feature (cool graph!). Anyway, today I didn't go right to the top (ie. the "Golf Ball") because I wanted to check out the 6% gradient on another part of the hill! Can you please tell me where exactly Woodcock hill and Gallows hill are as I usually just call them "Cratloe hill" and people are correcting me all the time calling them these names. I know they are basically the same area, but where one stops and the other begins I would love to know! Thanks ;)

    Have 9 100kms
    2 150kms(can I call that a treble)
    1 180km
Can I add one of my 20s to that

Did my second 100+km yesterday, so that's one for March and one (so far...) for April. My stats are quite low though, can't seem to get myself into the 20s km/hr, average speed for me yesterday looks like 18.6 km/hr. Possibly not helped by the amount of crap I was carrying that I didn't need, but sure at the moment completing the 100km is what I'm happy with.

100k yesterday on the fw. Glencullen sally gap roundstone and home. Great route. For some reason had a headwind the whole way and swore every meter never to take the fixie to wicklow again

108km today with ROK_ON. First definite metric century - up to Sally Gap and back, including hill repeats to find my lost Garmin, back by 12:30.

Need to do some imperial ones now, maybe 5am starts are required. :)

117km yesterday ticks the box for April for me.

Stocking Lane - Sally Gap - Kippure - Laragh - Wicklow Gap - Blessington - Tallaght - Crumlin.

Suffered badly for the 40km chunk in the middle with lower back muscle flexibility problem after tilting my bars down to where they should be. Pulled them back up in Laragh and after a good few stretches managed to get it just about bearable but was in a lot of discomfort with it and frozen toes. Had to stop in Hollywood for a sandwich and more stretches where I realized it was my Sealskinz socks causing the problem - the waterproof layer means sweat condenses and pretty much froze the toes so bad I couldn't feel them. Cycled the 40km home with no socks but it really helped.

So between the back, the toes and semi-bonking it was one of the roughest days I've had in the saddle but am happy to say I've noticed a really big improvement in climbing. Not saying I fly up the hills or anything, the mind now just knows I'm capable of making it to the top so I'm not solely focused on surviving and managed to push for a little bit of less-slowness (wouldn't exactly use the word speed :)) up the hills at times. And believe me, for me that's big progress.

Disappointed when I saw the 4hr 37mins for the first 100km but then realised 50km of that accounted for 1400 of the 1700metre ascent total and considering it had 4 (for me anyway) tough climbs and the discomfort I was in, I'm now reasonably happy with it.

Honestly thought about jacking it in and calling for a rescue when the back was at its worst and I couldn't stretch it out, but knowing that I might not have time to do another 100km in April and wanting to keep up on my committment to this challenge was a big factor in me keeping going so I'm glad the OP posted it (wonder how he's getting on himself!).

By the way, gotta love that ~35km home run stretch from Hollywood - Blessington to Tallaght - lovely flat or -1% road most of the way and certainly helps the morale to be cruising along at 35km/h for the last part than facing up to Poggio and the drag up from Enniskerry.

May century completed on Sunday! What was initially a 50km recovery ride turned into a 100km fairly soon after I saw how nice the weather really was!

What software do you use to get the stats out of? The cals number seems way off. My ride on Sunday was 102K over 5:47 and SportTracks/Garmin think I burned 4562Calories.

It's a Polar CS200, and uses your Weight & Height to determine you body mass index. It probably calculates a fitness index using your age and resting heart rate I'm not sure.

Basically, if you are less fit than me then if you do the exact same workout you will burn more calories! I'm not saying you don't know how the system works, or that you are less fit than me or that my computer is more accurate than yours (I don't think any of then can be 100% accurate, just a rough guide)! Please, dont take any offense! :D

I always find it crazy that the GDA's for the standard adult is 2000kcal per day and on one cycle we can burn this (and twice this in some cases! :p) in one go! Technically we could eat two (or three) of each meal and still not gain any weight but this generally doesn't happen in my case! Interesting fact I think! :pac:
