Is playing 9 holes of comp a no-no?

Pretty sure I know the answer to this already, but I thought I would ask the Q anyway. Is it ok to enter the regular Saturday comp in your club, but only play 9 holes?
The reason I ask, is that I don't have much interest in winning some tat to put on my mantlepiece, or maintaining my handicap(26), and the I have neither the time or inclination to spend 4 1/2 hours on a course every weekend. I would however like to get the chance to play with other members.

Yeah it's really not on. Mainly becuase a) in a three-ball comp you'll be leaving your partners in a two-ball to be held up for the whole back-nine and b) in busy competitions you could be keeping someone who does want to compete over 18 holes from getting a tee-time.

Fair play to you for asking the question but to be honest, especially if you're trying to meet a few fellow members, it's a sure-fire way to p*ss people off. Midweek evenings might suit you better - there's usually a good few members up just to play a few holes then. Saturday/Sunday comps are the business end for the bulk of members. It's not for you and that's fine but IMO, if you can't play 18 you shouldn't book a slot in an 18 hole comp.

In my club they have a 9 hole scramble on a Thurs where you go out with whoever is there. Nothing really serious more a way of getting people out

Agree with Sheet on this one. If you walked off after nine continually in competition you can be guaranteed you wouldn't be spoken too kindly of, aswell as probably having to explain yourself to the committee.

Agree with all before.

If you were to do this on an ongoing basis it would not be long until no one was putting their name beside you on the sheet.

Golf is a game of about 4hrs. When you joined a club you would have known this. In my club playing in competition time is reserved for those entering competition and casual golf is not permitted.

It will be hard to play 18 holes for you in competition time as the players you are out with will be trying to score as well as possible and if your only out for the ride this to may pee them off.

Thanks all, yeah, it's pretty much as I thought. There is a more relaxed stableford on Sundays which may be the solution.
