    Hi

    I hope you can help with a couple of facts regarding condoms.

    I am an 19 year old gay guy. I need to know if it is necessary for the receiver to use condoms when having ORAL sex?...
    I'm confused because;
    1) wouldn't it become more like sucking on a balloon instead and not very nice?
    2) taste and smell horrible. Nobody has ever said they love the smell of latex!

    Also, how relevant is a cold-sore on the mouth/in nose when giving oral? I mean, the herpes STI and the herpes virus that gives coldsores on the mouth are two different types of herpes right?

    I'm confused.

    Well if both giver and receiver are both free of sti's then i cant c the problem with no condom.

    Personally i dont c the point in getting a bj if u have to wear a condom.

    There are flavoured condoms for this purpose.

    But how can you be 100% sure that either partner are STI free unless you are present when test results are given & even with that some STI's can lay dormant for a number of months as far as I am aware. No I cant imagine giving/receiving oral is pleasant when using a condom but better safe than sorry and all that. AFAIK cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus and they are from group but different strains of virus....but do you want to risk finding out?

    There is a risk of catching HIV whenever there is an exchange of bodily fluids.

    Only if one of the people involved actually has the virus itself, it is not a pre-programmed genetic trait. To be safe though, its advisable that both use a condom to protect from any other STI's available.

    Very very relevant, and yes, two different types, but it's complicated, and you should definitely not give/receive oral sex if you have/think you have a cold sore (actually the /receive doesn't work so good there... don't receive if s/he has one)

    http://www.herpes-coldsores.com/herpes_prevention_tips.htm#cause_genital_herpes

    And rather than try explain my (shaky) understanding of the difference in types, here's another link; http://www.herpes-coldsores.com/herpes_simplex_1_and_2.htm

    One thing I find interesting (or am completely wrong about) is that if you have herpes 1 in your face (i.e. are prone to cold sores) you won't/can't get that type of herpes on your genitals. (Edit: article says "A prior infection with oral HSV-1 lowers the risk of acquiring genital HSV-1 even further. Studies show that genital HSV-1 infections almost always occur in people who have no prior infection with HSV of either type")

    wrt coldsores, most herpes above the waist are type 1 and most below the waist are type 2. but you can get either type in either place.

    so do not give oral sex if you have a clod sore or you risk your partner picking up herpes
